I have been working for myself since 1994 as a graphic designer and a printing broker, and over the course of the years, through formal education, self learning and actual experience I have learned a lot about how to use and repair a Mac and how to use major graphic design applications. I recently began tutoring because I love sharing my knowledge! I guess it’s in my blood, as both of my parents were teachers. My personal style is friendly and non-judgmental, and I generally impart information at a fairly quick pace, however I am always very sensitive to the learning needs of my clients and I can tailor my style to suit your needs.

Adobe Illustrator,

Adobe Illustrator

I consider myself to be an advanced intermediate user of Illustrator (whereas, I consider myself an expert user of Photoshop and InDesign, both of which I also tutor in) . What this might mean to you is that if you are a brand new user of Illustrator, then I can absolutely help you, but if you are yourself already an advanced intermediate user, I might not have enough to offer you. We can always determine my suitably for your needs through discussion prior to commencing any sessions. If I don’t think I will be able to assist you, I will be honest about it. My study of the application is ongoing. Formerly I was a user of Macromedia Freehand. Macromedia was absorbed by Adobe and they ultimately discontinued FreeHand in favor of Illustrator, as Illustrator is one of their flagship apps, and the two applications had significant overlap. In the interim, I was deeply involved in learning Photoshop and InDesign, and I found that in using those two applications I could create nearly anything I might have needed Illustrator for. At the same time, I realized that I could not ignore Illustrator as I often received Illustrator files from my clients, and there are some specific tasks that Illustrator is best suited for. As a result I determined to learn Illustrator, and I have been studying it and using it for several years. My knowledge of the application is that I know how to use and teach the tools and tasks most often used in Illustrator, and I can absolutely help a beginner or an intermediate user of the application to advance their knowledge and skills.
Adobe InDesign,

Adobe InDesign

I have been a freelance designer since 1994, and I have used Adobe InDesign since version 1.0 was released in 1999. My experience has encompassed creating all kinds of documents for my printing and design clients. I love teaching others how to make use of InDesign’s powerful features, and while the application may seem extremely complicated, I am skilled at quickly imparting the basics to my beginner students and I am equally adept at introducing more experienced users to some of the more complicated features that InDesign offers. I can help you become proficient at creating all kinds of documents, from your business card, through posters, indexed book or catalog projects, newsletters and annual reports, all the way to billboard size images. Adobe has done an incredible job of integrating all of the Creative Suite applications, and I can teach you how to incorporate layered and transparent Photoshop files and or Illustrator vector images into your InDesign documents. Personally, I have a laid back yet fast moving teaching style, and we can cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. At the same time, I always remain sensitive to your ability to absorb the lessons and I am happy to set a pace that you feel most comfortable with. I teach with a polite and non-judgemental style.
Adobe Lightroom,

Adobe Lightroom

I have been using Adobe Lightroom regularly since Version 1.0 first came out in January of 2006, and I consistently update to the newest versions as they come out. I am subscribed to the full suite of Adobe Creative Cloud applications so I am always using Adobe's latest application releases. Each new update includes either new full modules or new features within existing modules, and I am constantly studying and practicing these new features in order to remain current. I had already been using Photoshop for my image editing needs for over ten years when I started using Lightroom, and I realized that Lightroom had some significantly different tools from Photoshop and that those tools could allow Lightroom to serve as an excellent compliment to Photoshop, while providing me with greater ease in my workflow. There is considerable overlap between the functions of Photoshop and Lightroom, and at the same time, each has strengths that the other lacks. As a result of this, many photographers and image editors (including myself) have chosen to continue using both applications, passing images back and forth between them in order to take advantage of the strengths of each, while overcoming the weaknesses of the other. My personal education is ongoing with Lightroom and all the other Adobe applications that I tutor. My tutoring style is polite, patient and plain spoken, and I can confidently instruct you in all of the basics of Lightroom and have you up and running with all the essential workspace and workflow habits quickly. I will also take you through a rundown on the functionality of Lightroom’s various modules, and the tools available within each module. I am happy to tailor the sessions to topics that you personally wish to cover, and if you want to, we can use your images for our editing practice. Throughout my tutoring sessions in either Lightroom (or Photoshop), I consistently share my knowledge regarding color theory and other aspects of manipulating digital images whenever the information is relevant to underst

Adobe Photoshop

My experience with Adobe Photoshop (and other Adobe Creative Suite apps) is extensive. I have been using Photoshop since version 4 was released in 1996, and I have been tutoring Photoshop for over 20 years. I subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of applications so I am always using the latest versions. Photoshop can seem daunting to a beginner, and indeed it is a deep application with many powerful features. However, I am confident that I can quickly get complete beginners up to speed with some basic instruction about how to use the application to optimize their photos, or to create graphic files from scratch by starting with a “blank canvas”. If you already have some experience with Photoshop and want to dive deeper into its power, I can provide helpful guidance to intermediate and advanced intermediate users as well. An important part of achieving great results with photo manipulations in Photoshop is strongly related to the quality of the photo you start with. For those who take and edit your own photos, I integrate tips and advice about how to best capture your shots in order to optimize your results once you take them into Photoshop. I have extensive knowledge about many of the tools and techniques that one might commonly use to improve their image files using varied methods such as: applying levels and curves adjustments, creating, manipulating and applying regular layers and adjustment layers, applying filters, making sophisticated targeted selections and how to employ the multiple tools used to do so, using those selections to create transparency masks and what techniques can be employed to modify those masks, applying color theory and color correction, editing out undesired artifacts, noise, scratches, dust and other damage, or adding in elements that might be desired, (for instance reducing skin blemishes and smile lines, swapping out the face of the blinking member in a group photo, removing people, buildings, roads, telephone poles and wires, etc). Photography

I started practicing photography before digital cameras existed and when digital first showed up, I made the transition and have since used a variety of different digital cameras (Olympus, Sony and Canon) of a variety of models as well (basic point and shoots, midlevel prosumer mega zooms, and pro level digital DSLRs with interchangeable lenses). I feel confident that I can help you get better using your camera quickly. In my film camera days I learned the essentials of photography, from studying light and composition, to camera settings and into darkroom developing of my black and white work. During my digital camera period I have made extensive use of image manipulation software, most notably Photoshop, Lightroom and iPhoto.

Macintosh,

Macintosh

I have been using Apple Macintosh computers since 1985, just one year after the release of the very first Macintosh desktop computer. My first exposure to Macs was during my tenure as a print shop owner when I acquired one in order to take advantage of the new concept of "desktop publishing" that Apple had presented to the business world, and I started setting type for myself in my printing business. In 1994 I left the brick and mortar phase of printing and became a printing broker and a graphic designer (I have been a photographer and an artist since early on in my life), taking software training courses in many major design applications, in using the Macintosh operating system software, and in Macintosh software and hardware maintenance. I found early on that despite the Mac's ease of use the system was vastly deeper than what appeared on the surface, and I also learned that despite the Mac OS's relative stability, occasionally there were issues with system and application software corruption that required repair. My experience with outside support services in those early years was not wonderful. Most Mac oriented tech support service providers at that time could not respond in a timely fashion, often scheduling my appointment with them several days out from my initial contact. Once they did arrive, I often knew more than they did, and sometimes they not only failed to help me resolve my issues but they occasionally even made things worse, causing me to lose productivity and business. I decided that I could not operate my business with this poor level of assistance, so I took it upon my self to obtain the knowledge needed to not only learn as much as I could about how to use my Macs efficiently, but also how to make software repairs and hardware upgrades when required, and most importantly, what I could do on a regular basis to help prevent software corruption issues by performing routine maintenance procedures. Throughout this process, I have built a large body of knowledge and resources about using, maintaini

5-star dream tutor

If I had to conjure a world-class Photoshop tutor, I would dream up Carl. He delivers far more than you’ll pay for, packing each session with bonus tools, tips, and explanations like he’s drawing from a bottomless well. He’s articulate, methodical, and patient, and his depth of knowledge is revealed by his capacity to break down complex actions into their component parts. I would recommend him without hesitation.

Great tutor!

Helped with organizing my files on my Mac using the Finder and taught me about shortcut keys. Super helpful and patient! Excellent teacher! He showed me how to be more productive and look forward to the next one.

Barbara L.

Carl is teaching me how to get everything properly organized before upgrading Lightroom. This is going to take some time but he is tutoring me at my pace. So far we have accomplished a system for my photos outside of LR, something I should have done over the last 10 years.

Very Knowledgeable

Carl knows the real ins and outs of Mac. You get so much info. I knew nothing of this system coming from PC world and had to learn fast. I do suggest you hire him to teach you and he makes a plan for you. Good stuff.

Really great

Carl is an excellent tutor -- a good listener, patient, thorough, and a clear communicator. With me he followed up with additional information by email he thought might be helpful as well. He wants you to truly understand the solutions to your issues.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Carl addressed the accomplishment of the goal I had set for our session immediately, gave a coherent analysis of the steps we took to introduce me to the details of a platform with which I was unacquainted and provided me with several meta skills that work on all Mac applications. It was a very satisfactory session.

I love Carl's passion!

Carl has so much knowledge and is sincerely intent on conveying as much as possible. He is a very good listener and picks up learning cues from his student which helps to guide the lessons. After two lessons, I am feeling comfortable using InDesign to develop marketing materials for my company.

Very knowledgeable, patient and thorough

Carl G. exceeded my expectations! I've never worked with a tutor before and having to do this remotely I'll admit made me a little apprehensive. Carl walked me through every step slowly and patiently making sure I was keeping up with every step. He never made me feel dumb or inadequate to do the tasks. In fact he had more confidence in me than I did. I highly recommend Carl G. and will use again should the need arise.
