Hello,

I've taught a wide range of science classes, including chemistry, physics, earth science, biology, forensics, and history of science, and I use math a lot in these disciplines. My primary background is in chemistry, with over 30 years in industrial research and development (R&D) roles before I transitioned into teaching. I love teaching science - there are so many interesting things happening in the world that it is a great opportunity to put these events in perspective with students.

I have a PhD in Chemistry and an MBA in Marketing. My business background came about as a result of my strong interest in optimal selection and guiding of R&D projects in my industrial experience (WR Grace, Millipore, and Procter and Gamble (P&G) - please ask me about the amazing science behind bubbles!). After a career in industrial R&D, I started teaching high school science and have now transitioned into tutoring.

I love patiently answering questions about why a particular science is useful, and can can become entertainingly animated when solving problems.

If you are looking for someone patient, knowledgeable, and excited about science and teaching, then please contact me. I'd love to help.

Art

Adobe Illustrator,

Adobe Illustrator

Although I am qualified to tutor Illustrator, my primary experience is in Photoshop. I do own Adobe Illustrator CS6, so am willing to tutor or help at a reduced hourly rate.
Adobe Photoshop,

Adobe Photoshop

I am a self-taught Photoshopper with over 20 years of experience. My hobbies are photo and video editing. I subscribe to PhotoshopUser Magazine and am a member of NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals). These are great sources for ideas and tutorials. I also have instructional DVD's on all of Adobe's Creative Suite products, including Photoshop, Premiere, Flash, and After Effects. I am not a professional, but I can teach the basics, common tools, useful but hidden functions, and and how to avoid many of the frustrations and common errors.
Film,

Film

My hobbies are digital photo and video editing. I own and use Adobe Photoshop, Premier, After Effects, Soundbooth, and Smartsound SonicFire Pro music/sound effect editor. I am a member of NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) and subscribe to PhotoshopUser and Videomaker magazines. If you are interested in bringing your personal film and video into the computer and editing it for YouTube, classroom, or personal use, I can show you the steps, software, and tips for entertaining friends and family. Learn how to use greenscreen for separating the subject from the backgrond for insertion into another scene (e.g., Mars). I also have access to background video (e.g., Boston skyline, etc.) for use.
Video Production

Video Production

My credentials for video production all come via a self-taught experience covering nearly 20 years. I used several basic editing packages before moving to Adobe Premiere Pro. I now subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud (CC), which contains Premiere, Photoshop, Audition, Illustrator, and others. I'm self-taught via Total Training DVD discs and through subscription to Video Editor and COW magazines (including their online tutorials). A hobby, but one in which I've invested a lot of time and money. I'm patient and understand the frustrations of learning the feature-rich Adobe programs.

Business

Business,

Business

My education includes a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati, with a focus on international marketing. I earned this degree while employed at Procter and Gamble – a premier consumer marketing company that defines many of the good marketing practices that make a company successful. The study of business comprises a variety of familiar subtopics: marketing, finance, economics, product development, business law, and management. Another key factor is entrepreneurship - the ability to conceive and implement novel new products, services, and business practices. Negotiating skills are also valuable and can be practiced with mock scenarios. “Business” involves synthesizing all of these elements into a general business strategy based first on marketing (is there a need), product development (can it be made), finance (will it make or lose money), law (environmental, trade, and business laws), and management (motivating and leading the staff). Negotiation is required at all levels and can often define success or failure. Business models are culturally dependent. One based on "free enterprise" operates on a different set of rules than one in another country or culture. International marketing skills are important in understanding these points.
Finance,

Finance

I enjoy playing with money. Finance is the math, logic, and laws concerning the flow and accounting of money in a defined entity. While many of the financial tools involve objective numbers, the more difficult factors involve such things as risk (e.g., defaults), timing (e.g. product launch and sales forecasts), and interest rate fluctuations. A personal lesson in finance occurred when I believed, incorrectly, that Enron's management properly reported their financial statements. Learn how to read between the lines in financial statements.
Financial Accounting,

Financial Accounting

I have an MBA in Marketing from the University of Cincinnati. That degree has prerequesites of various accounting and economics courses. I was Treasurer for the North American Membrane Socirty for three years, as well as Treasurer for two Homeowner's Associations and the local "Friends of the Boxford Library."
Marketing,

Marketing

My education includes a Master's of Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati, with a focus on international marketing. I earned this degree while employed at Procter and Gamble – a premier consumer marketing company that defines many of the good marketing practices that make a company successful. In summary, marketing involves a complex series of activities designed to 1) identify a customer need, 2) quantifying the performance needs of the product or service, 3) requesting the organization to develop a solution to the need, 4) prepare the advertising and distribution plans, and 5) put into place customer product support. Identifying and quantifying the customer need requires a familiarity with the customers and their restrictions augmented with statistically correct market surveys to predict the dollar value of customer acceptance for the selected performance and price targets.
Microsoft Excel,

Microsoft Excel

My first desktop computer was at Procter and Gamble in 1978, with 256K memory and a 10 MB (yes megabite) hard drive, which itself was $5,000. But what really astounded me was a program called Lotus 1-2-3, an early spreadsheet that made me realize why personal computers were here to stay. Excel is now the spreadheet of choice and it has acquired some powerful features over the years. Learn to quickly set up complex spreadsheets with special copy and paste functions and take advantage of Excel's internal functions and graphing tools, But did you know about the ability of Excel to grab data from a website and enter it into a spreadsheet format without having to type anything? Very powerful tool. Excel also makes a great database tool with its own sorting functionality. If you have basic to advanced questions and/or would like to learn how to make this program more efficient for your needs, I can help.
Microsoft PowerPoint,

Microsoft PowerPoint

Powerpoint is a useful communication tool for the digital age. It is easy to enter words and sentences for a slideshow. The more powerful tools include functions contained in the Insert and Animations tabs. Insert pictures is relatively straightforward but spreadsheets and other active documents are trickier. The animation functionality can be very useful for certain applications, but it is easy to overuse these features. Learn them, but use only where the information is better explained by some moving graphic element. Adding links to video and website is an invitation to problems when presenting. These can be overcome by embedding feature, depending on the format.
Microsoft Word,

Microsoft Word

Word is a common word processor with some powerful features above and beyond a that of a memory typewriter. Spell check, tracking and accepting revisions, shortcuts, insertion of spreadsheets and photos, tables, and wordart provide much greater functionality.

I have published papers and book chapters. I have also had business communication training (at P&G) and have published my thesis. My responsibilities included publishing brochures and announcements for Grace Membrane Systems. I am experienced in and have software for Adobe PDF and various graphic arts programs such as Photoshop. I understand the importance of typography selection for image and of concise communication style. Graphic content is vital for communicating and for attracting attention. The layout of the page is also important. I have published photo books.
General Computer,

General Computer

I have a long history with computers, starting with punch cards for the Indiana University central computer, followed soon after by hands-on work with a DEC PDP8 unit for my PhD thesis project. The PDP8 required toggling each 12-bit instruction in machine code (ones and zeros) using twelve switches on the front of a unit the size of a mini-fridge. The "hard drive" back then was a teletype that produced a ticker tape of each line of code. I learned to program with machine code and very much appreciate the advent of modern computing that makes all of this so much easier. My long history with computers has built a solid, self-taught knowledge of setting up and using them effeciently. I can troubleshoot problems and provide guidance on popular Windows-based systems, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet Explorer, and a number of creative design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, Soundbooth, and other digital photo and video editing tools. Excel has some great tools that aren't well-known. I am also good with Internet-based instructional and reference materials. If your goal is to become more confident and proficient with general computers skills, I can help.

American History

American history is short by world standards, if one ignores the history of the native Americans. But their history is equally interesting and filled with useful teachings. Their respect of the environment is perhaps the lesson worth relearning today. History since Columbus is rich with the ideas of people like John Adams and the Continental Congress that formed the foundation of liberty. Many arriving in the New World came because of the attraction of practicing their ideals, whether it be religious or business. There is a lot to learn from these debates and experiences.

Mathematics is the language of science. I started my education as a math major before switching into Chemistry. But I've always had a love and fascination for numbers. It is this love that makes Chemistry and Physics such interesting sciences. Starting with Algebra, humans have devised a method of numeric communication that allows us to model the natural world. Wonderful! Algebra is a key component of this numeric characterization of the universe and finds use in everyday life. I can convey this enthusiasm of numbers in tutoring.

The SAT has changed over the years to reflect a more "real-world" set of questions and circumstances students are likely to encounter in college and beyond. This is good, as it moves away from memorization of word definitions and into understanding what a word means in the context of which it is used. The math and and science portions look for reasoning skills and ability to document a conclusion. Practicing for this test should also include test-taking strategies. These include the processes of understanding the question and evaluating the answer options in order to eliminate any that are not correct responses. In the math section, it is important to practice estimation, even on that portion of the test that allows calculators. I can offer a clear explanation of these strategies, as well as solid instruction on the math and science questions, as needed.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I currently teach high school science and have a PhD in Chemistry and an MBA in Marketing. Systems of linear equations are common in science and mathematics. This field of mathematics introduces the student how to use a series of relationships (equations) to solve problems of practical importance. It is the first step to more serious calculations such as calculus. There are typically multiple unknowns in problems and if they can all be related to each other in separate relationships, it is possible to solve for each unknown using techniques of substitution. These techniques often require some imagination to efficiently solve for the unknowns. Linear algebra teaches these skills.

Physical science covers a lot of material but generally refers to those parts of science dealing with inanimate matter or energy (e.g., chemistry, physics and astronomy). But biological research also has a large physical science component in certain areas. The focus on matter and energy forms a good foundation for understanding the physical world. Terms like work, energy, mass, heat, potential, kinetic, density, etc. are all physical properties that can be defined and understood. Heat means different things depending on whether it is used in a science definition or in a weather forecast. Speed, velocity, and time can also be interpreted differently. Science depends on a common set of definitions concerning the physical properties of an item.

Take a break and get some sleep, or the time is wasted and disappointment sets in. I can help make study interesting and completion an accomplishment that provide incentive.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Mathematics is the language of science. I started my education as a math major before switching into Chemistry. But I've always had a love and fascination for numbers. It is this love that makes Chemistry and Physics such interesting sciences. Starting with Algebra, humans have devised a method of numeric communication that allows us to model the natural world. Wonderful! Algebra is a key component of this numeric characterization of the universe and finds use in everyday life. I can convey this enthusiasm of numbers in tutoring.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I developed strong skills in Algebra in preparation for my major in Chemistry. My original major at Indiana University was math, but I switched to Chemistry in the first year. Math is the language of science, and I'm approved to tutor a variety of math subjects.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I can help with all fields of chemistry with special emphasis on analytical techniques. I am comfortable with balanced equations, mole calculations, organic, physical and nuclear chemistry fields. I spent 30 years in industrial R&D and 10 in teaching. Patient and flexible.
GED,

GED

GED exams cover a wide range of topics in science, math, language arts, and social studies. My combined education (PhD Chemist and MBA in Marketing) and experience (industrial and education) has built strengths in all these areas, allowing me to support the breath of topics covered in a GED exam. I can also provide alternative resources that can be used to augment the time spent tutoring, so the student can reduce total cost and proceed conveniently at their own pace.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

Good communication is crucial to the sciences, business careers, and teaching. I took a business communications course while working at Procter and Gamble and learned valuable techniques for efficient communication. I apply these lessons to seminars I present in the local communities on advances in science and technology. It also lead to very good visual communication skills via Adobe Photoshop and Premiere. Yes, I use Powerpoint, but minimize the words and cluttered charts. Focus on getting the point across simply and, often, visually.

Test Preparation

ACT Science,

ACT Science

Although a large number of topics are covered in the ACT test, it is most important to build a foundation of the most important ideas across all disciplines that, when tied together, build understanding and confidence for the test. My background in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Engineering enhances this cross-functional conversation.
ASVAB,

ASVAB

The ASVAB covers a wide range of subject areas. This fits my background and interests well. I have good foundations in math chemistry, physics, biology, electrical circuits and computer logic, and used to work on my own car (until working on a Honda became nearly impossible without special tools and a lift). The test also emphasizes comprehension and correct word usage. My skills are honed from over 30 years in industrial R&D and teaching science, where good communication is essential.

TEAS

The TEAS Exam covers Reading, Science, Math, English, and Language skills. My science skills include all sciences (PhD in Chemistry from the University of Illinois, and taught High School Biology, Physics, Engineering and Earth Science). My experience and education (BS, PhD, and MBA) included classes on Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, Statistics, and Financial Accounting. This formal education provides a solid background in all fields of math. My experience as an R&D Manager and VP of R&D built great communication and writing skills (over 30 years of industrial experience). These skills were also developed during my MBA (Marketing) studies at the Univ of Cincinnati, augmented with business communication classes sponsored by Procter and Gamble. English, Grammar, and Reading come as a result of many working years in managerial positions that resulted in published articles, presented papers, and technical reports. Proper use of grammar, punctuation, and clarity are key requirements and were obtained via both study and practice.

Very Patient

Bob was great and very patient with my daughter. He encouraged her and gave her confidence. He made time for her in his busy schedule knowing she only had a short amount of time to study prior to finals. If need be I would hire Bob again. Thanks Bob!

Tutor responded:

Thank you, Darlene, for your kind comments. Patrice is a great student, so she should get much of the credit. She made it interesting and relatively easy. If you ever need me again, I'd lower my rate for the privilege of working with you and Patrice. She will do well.

Excellent in both Excel and chemistry

I selected Robert as my tutor for both Excel and for chemistry. The training was to add skills for what I do at work. I am older and never had training on Excel but everyone at my work office uses it. As for chemistry, I needed to learn some specific things but took my last chemistry course about 50 years ago in college. We met in person for our first lesson in Excel and the training was exactly what I needed. Robert was patient, knowledgeable and knows how to teach. He does not talk down to you and makes you feel good about the progress you are making. I highly recommend Robert as an Excel tutor. We finished the Excel topics I wanted to cover and then we moved on to chemistry. Again, all the things I said about Robert regarding Excel are true for chemistry (plus he has a PhD in chemistry and was in industry for years). We only had a short time for chemistry but I learned a lot and will be scheduling further training in the next couple weeks. Excellent tutor and a pleasure to work with. Highly recommend him.

A spectacular Teachet

Robert is very patient with me, allowing me to interrupt and confirm my sense of his demonstration of Photoshop techniques. I love his gentle, detailed explanations. Going forward, I know I will master Photoshop. I can’t thank him enough.

Kind, helpful, available, and effective teacher.

Robert is helping me complete a final photoshop project. He taught me basic and some advanced techniques (since this is not intuitive). He was able to come to my home and see where I was having trouble. Additionally he explained the reason behind some of the processes which I found very helpful.

Conscientious, thorough, and fun

Bob is working with my two seventh-graders to strengthen their math skills. He is helping them to fill in any gaps from things they missed in previous years, and he is preparing them for the years ahead. Bob has assessed the kids well so that they are working on exactly what they need to be working on. He is attentive to their needs and makes sure that they understand the concepts thoroughly. He is also working with them on test-taking skills. He manages to make all this fun, so the kids stay engaged. We're so glad we found Bob!
