I won't go so far as to say I make tutoring fun, but I make sure it's engaging and meaningful. Tutoring isn't just memorization and repetitive practice drills; that's passive and wastes time. I instill a sense of confidence within my students so they feel they can tackle topics on their own. I've even worked with other tutors and educators to hone their skills and improve their teaching styles.
My experience tutoring so many subjects and exams has given me insight that lets me simplify even the most complex material. That's why I believe myself to be such an effective tutor. I break the material down into simpler concepts.
Experience also allows me to be flexible. Suddenly remember halfway through physics homework that you also have a pre-calc quiz tomorrow and want to spend the rest of our session reviewing for that? You got it.

Over the years I have worked with numerous high school students taking the SAT, ACT, and AP exams. With many of those students, I would sit down with them and look at when these exams are offered and how they line up with final exams or other activities. I also discuss if and when a student should re-take certain standardized exams and when the best time to take certain exams would be (such as end of Junior year or early Senior year). I also sit down with students and parents and talk about course selection, in addition to extra-curricular activities. I spend time going over deadlines in detail and talking to them about early decision, early action, and rolling admissions. I tell my students to work on their essays and the Common Application during the summer so that once the school year starts, they have that much less to do. In addition to that, I discuss with students which teachers and advisers they ask for letter of recommendation. I also help review essays and have helped many students put together applications and edit resumes. I've had a number of parents tell me that I've been more helpful than their son's/daughter's guidance counselor at school.

I have helped several students successfully prepare for the Praxis exam Reading, Writing, and Math. The Praxis is developed by ETS, which is the same organization that develops the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and the GRE. Hence, the material across all those those exams are very similar. I would make sure the student understood what was on the exam, the format of the exam, and general strategies for the test itself.

High power tutor!

My son came to Aalok for help because he was stuck at 34 on the ACT. Not that it's a bad score, but it's very hard to raise that score because the difference might be just 1 or 2 questions. In a few lessons, Aalok narrowed down his weak spots and continuously drilled him on the similar type of questions from previous tests. Aalok is resourceful, insightful, and highly energized. He kept my son engaged and thinking hard the whole time. And the result is - My son got a 35 on his ACT. (His science improved from 33 to 36) So lucky we found Aalok!

Terrific SAT tutor

My son has only had 2 sessions with Aalok but he has already picked up some very useful strategies for taking the SAT. He has also shown him how to quickly solve some of the math problems that you may see on the test. Aalok has emphasized that just getting the correct answer is not good enough.
