Hi there, my name is Jose!
Likely similar to many of you, I am a life-long learner. I graduated from Washington State University summa cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Affairs, Public Policy and Politics, minors in Global Studies and Spanish, and a certificate in Global Leadership. I earned my Master's degree from the University of Southern California and a professional certificate in financial management. I am currently pursuing my PhD at the University of Southern California, after which I intend to continue my career as a university professor and researcher.
I have eight years of teaching experience from high school to university levels. I first started my teaching journey in college when I began working at my local school district as a multi-subject high school tutor. In this role, I tutored students at every academic level, from first-year students to seniors. I facilitated tutoring sessions in both 1:1 and small group settings. My tutoring work focused mostly on the Spanish language and the humanities. In graduate school, I have been fortunate enough to continue teaching and tutoring in public policy and economics. I most recently taught 60 undergraduate students in an introductory public policy course.
While my expertise extends across several disciplines, I am most passionate about and capable to tutor in the subjects of Spanish, government/public policy, political science, microeconomics, statistics, and statistics software (Stata, SPSS, and Python packages for data analysis). As an academic, I have honed my written language skills and can provide high-quality English tutoring, with a particular emphasis on grammar and syntax.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the concept of knowledge-in-action, which emphasizes learning in context. I strive to make my courses and tutoring sessions fun and engaging, as this is the best way to learn. I also am cognizant that not everyone learns the same, so finding an approach that works for you is my number one priority as your tutor.
