Hi, I’m Nick and I am a current Ph.D. candidate at LSU. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology at Auburn University, where I graduated with honors. I then obtained my Master’s degree at Florida Gulf Coast University, where I majored in Environmental Science, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. I am currently at LSU studying for my Ph.D. in Oceanography with a minor in Geology.
I come from a background of education, as my parents were teachers/tutors and the value they placed on education has always stuck with me. I have nearly 15 years of tutoring and teaching experience working with students of all ages. I started tutoring in high school to help younger students with difficult classes (Latin, Biology, History, Literature, etc.) and then during my undergrad career, I was a tutor for the Auburn athletics department, teaching classes as varied as Biology, Genetics, and World History. The athletes I taught enjoyed my tutoring so much that they recommended me to their friends, and I began tutoring all students. Upon graduating, I worked at several educational summer camps and field trip locations across the southeast, then started my Master’s program. At FGCU I was a teaching assistant for classes in Geology, Environmental Science, Ecology, and Oceanography and became the primary teaching assistant at the marine lab, leading field trips and teaching classes on the geology, chemistry, meteorology, physics, ecology, and biology of the oceans. I also co-created and co-led two summer camps for elementary, middle, and high school students to learn about the ocean.
My philosophy on teaching is to really help the student understand the topic, not just memorize facts. I want to help students succeed in their classes, help them truly enjoy their education, and to develop a lifelong interest in whatever subject they are studying. But don’t worry…goal #1 is to pass the class and have fun doing it!
