I have more than 20 years of experience as a teacher and private tutor, working with students in most high school academic subjects. All students are different, so I try to determine their needs and most effective learning styles at the beginning. Although I can adjust to any curriculum and will help students meet the requirements of their teachers, I use my own well-tested methods to give students different perspectives that may enable them to understand the material more easily. Students must do their own homework and write their own papers. However, I will help them with every step, offering tips and critiques based on the success of hundreds of students with whom I have worked. My main subjects have been upper levels of high school math and science, including calculus, pre-calculus (college algebra), trigonometry, chemistry and biology. I also have helped many students with literature (classical and contemporary American, British and Russian fiction, poetry and drama). As a former newspaper reporter and editor, I know how to work with students to improve their skills in analysis and writing. I can guide, but students must do the work.

I have helped many high school and college students with organization, listening, reading, note-taking, outlining, summarization and review. Some students who are having trouble do not have a clear plan for approaching each of their courses. I can help them establish a plan. It usually begins with a written daily ledger of homework assignments, upcoming quizzes and tests, and any long-term projects that need periodic attention. Students learn to update their ledgers every day, including on weekends. They also learn how to set aside time each day for focused studying, with breaks between courses. The student's ledger serves as a guide for that day's activities. Sometimes there will be new material to learn, and a bit of previous material to review. Other times, the focus will be on preparing for a test, or even getting ahead. And there may be an occasional day off from any academic activity. The key is to keep up with each subject. I can help with the planning, and with tips about how to develop an efficient and productive overall study program.

Many examples will be provided periods ranging from before the Revolution through today.
World History,

World History

This course does not have a set curriculum. It often is called "World Cultures," a survey course that examines the great civilizations of the past (Mesopotamia, China, India, Egypt, Meso-America, Greece, Rome). Another version focuses on more modern history, beginning with European colonialism (1500-1900) and continuing through the nationalistic movements of the 20th Century. I can help students with either approach, or with a variant that has elements of both.

GREAT tutor

Mr M. is a terrific tutor. He is very patient with the student (my son has ADHD) and also works to instill the confidence in the student that they can master the subject. My son, who also has a social anxiety disorder, quickly felt comfortable with him, and his grades in math have soared. Mr. M. is also working with him on his writing, and has been very flexible when holidays (or work crises) have interfered with regular scheduling. I am so thankful for his assistance - and my son has truly enjoyed working with him. So much so that after he got accepted to a nearby university, he already asked if I would be willing to help him travel back to see Mr. M. for additional learning support. Of course I enthusiastically agreed.

Helpful First lesson

After just the first lesson with Jack my daughter already feels the confidence that with his help she will have a successful year in math. My daughter felt very comfortable with him.He was able to find her weaknesses and guide her right away.

Very Critically Gifted Tutor

I had the pleasure to work with him on literary work. His clarity and his analytical skills made Henry James to read such a pleasure!

Patient and Prepared

Jack is very patient with my daughter and always well prepared for her lesson. He quickly established a comfort level with her and continues to address her particular needs. She reports that she understood the material before the lesson, but Jack connects the wires and makes the lightbulbs go off. While he addresses her schoolwork, he's also teaching her how to think, and that's invaluable. I really love that they're being proactive and not addressing problem areas after they arise. It's going to be a good year.

Great second semester!

Jack has been a tremendous help all semester. My son has improved his Trig / Pre-Calc grade by almost three points and his confidence has increased greatly. Wish we had started earlier.

Prompt, patient and always well prepared

Jack is prompt, patient and always well prepared. He has been helpful in identifying the problems that my children are having with math and has provided worksheets to help them in developing stronger skills. We have had a very good experience with Jack and look forward to continuing to work with him.
