I'm a biotech professional currently working for a Fortune 50 company; I have fourteen years' experience in the industry, mostly at some of the largest pharma companies in the world. I hold a B.Sc. in Biology from Penn State University and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. My career requires use of advanced math, statistics, chemistry, biology, and mechanical skills on a daily basis, honing my knowledge through constant use. I have many years working as a private tutor for grade school, high school, and college, and also as a trainer and subject-matter expert in the biotech and hospitality industries, so I'm experienced in teaching adult learners as well as children.

I also have three young children in school - all with As and Bs in their subjects. I work well with grade school and middle-school aged children, and find I can often break down topics to be readily accessible to even young learners and keep learning interesting. I was hyperactive as a child (some might say I still am), so I know what it's like to crave learning but to be easily distracted. Also, two of my three children are in speech therapy, so I am familiar with speech difficulties and delays, but these two children are also part of an accelerated learning program in our district due to their aptitude and drive.

Additionally, I have experience in most of the other hard sciences (physics, earth sciences, and so on) as well as a number of psychology subsections (developmental, cognitive, organizational/engineering, and biological). I am well-versed in English topics, spanning literature, sentence mechanics, vocabulary, rhetoric skills, persuasive writing, technical writing, and fiction. I also possess excellent mathematics skills covering algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and business math.

Since I began tutoring at WyzAnt, my students have run the gamut of English topics (mechanics, rhetoric, literary criticism, vocabulary), most of the science topics (with a particular focus on chemistry, biology, and physics), and most

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I feel that English for the standardized tests is one of my specialties. My personal scores these sections of the the SAT and the ACT were very high, and my experience with students thus far has been very positive; most of my students have seen a 3-4 point increase on the ACT, or around 100 point increase on the SAT, both on the top end of the tests (so high 20s to low 30s, and mid-500s to high 600/low 700s).
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I'm also very proficient in instructing the reading sections of the SAT and the ACT; I have a solid background in literature and technical writing, from my years in college, the fiction I've written, my years as a technical writer in the sciences, and my current work on my MBA.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I tutor algebra I and II for high school and college students. My personal work requires extensive use of algebra and other formulaic math. My personal weakness in algebra is matrices - I'm proficient with them, but I'm not very found of them, as most problems you would solve with matrices can be solved with other, much easier algebra operations. All of my students have thus far received A's and B's in their algebra classes, so I know I can help you or your student as well!

I have a B.Sc in Biology from Penn State. My degree is specifically focused in vertebrate physiology. The core of biology, in my opinion, is instruction in the theory of evolution and basic biochemistry. With mastery of these two topics, the rest of biology and related bio-classes comes much easier.

SAT Math,

SAT Math

I tutor both the SAT and ACT math sections. Personally, I think the ACT math section better covers real world expectations for most students - obviously math and physics students need more skills than the ACT covers, but not everyone in the world plans on being one of those two professionals. For the rest of us (even many scientists), aptitude on the ACT Math section correlates to success in college math and math-affiliated fields. The ACT is meatier, but the SAT is denser; there are fewer questions on the SAT Math, but they cover some higher level material you won't see on the ACT. Regardless, I can teach the skills necessary to move through these sections of the test confidently and prepare you with the foreknowledge you'll need to score consistently well on this portion of either test.

Since age 5, I've played a variety of instruments - piano, flute, saxophone, guitar, and vocals. It is easier than the SAT, obviously - it does not test to the same level of math, nor does it have a full writing section - but it is still an important indicator test.
SAT Math,

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

I'm also very proficient in instructing the reading sections of the SAT and the ACT; I have a solid background in literature and technical writing, from my years in college, the fiction I've written, my years as a technical writer in the sciences, and my current work on my MBA.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

I feel that English for the standardized tests is one of my specialties. My personal scores these sections of the the SAT and the ACT were very high, and my experience with students thus far has been very positive; most of my students have seen a 3-4 point increase on the ACT, or around 100 point increase on the SAT, both on the top end of the tests (so high 20s to low 30s, and mid-500s to high 600/low 700s).

A wealth of knowledge!!

Shannon started tutoring my daughter, a high school junior, this past spring, in English and Chemistry. He rapidly assessed the course work, areas she struggled with, and was very effective In moving her work forward, such that she improved more than a full letter grade in English, and a full grade in Chemistry and went into final exams with confidence. Shannon is excellent at literature analysis, writing mechanics, vocabulary - and his teaching style is creative and tailored to the student. He gives lots of practical tips As to how to move forward even when the subject topic is not your favorite. He's also excellent in Chemistry again, assessing both the coursework required and teaching specific concepts as well as how to approach the material. Shannon is punctual, realistic and positive in his approach, and makes every effort to be flexible with appointment times and provide the tutoring time needed. He really helped my student get back on track and end her school year successfully!

Fabulous Tutor!

Shannon helped me tremendously to grasp concepts in General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. I spent a full year tutoring with Shannon, and would highly recommend his services. He is committed to helping you succeed. Shannon is extremely knowledgeable in the subjects, but what I found also very helpful is his flexibility in teaching style. Shannon will work with you to come up with a game plan that best fits your needs. Shannon is awesome! I have had other tutors in previous years, and none have compared to the knowledge, flexibility and professionalism that Shannon exhibits. I would HIGHLY recommend Shannon!

Excellent tutor!

Mr. C is an excellent tutor who went out of his way to help provide the best tutoring experience. He worked to enhance our sessions by preparing assignments for me to do for review what I learned and to research new topics. Mr. C taught me in such a way that gave me interest and provided me insight into the fields of biology. He also made connections between topics my own personal interests and topics that we were focusing on, therefore tailoring the course to benefit me as much as possible. Mr. C can easily compliment learning styles, further personalizing the experience.

Great tutor!

Shannon tutored me for an accelerated college chemistry course and was very helpful. He prepped for topics so that he knew what I was working on for each lesson and was able to explain topics in different ways until I could understand them. He was very patient and greatly helped me to do better in the course. I would highly recommend him as a tutor! He was creative and gave me tips on ways to approach different problems so that I could grasp the concepts behind what I was doing in a practical manner. He was also very flexible with timing and was willing to switch around our meetings to work with my exam schedule. He was a great tutor!!
