As an Instructional coach, college professor, and English teacher, I have taught adult learners, as well as college, high school, and elementary students. As an Instructional coach, college professor, and English teacher, I have taught adult learners, as well as college, high school, and elementary students. I hold a Master of Fine Arts in Writing from Sarah Lawrence College, a Master of Science in Teaching from Fordham College, and a NYS Teaching Certificate in Teaching English 7-12.

As an Instructional Coach at a charter elementary school, I mentored teachers, ran school wide professional development in best practices, and taught reading and writing to struggling learners. Before I was a coach, I worked as a High School English teacher for seven years, where I taught AP Literature and Composition, Creative Writing, and Special Education classes.

For many years, I have tutored students of all ages and abilities in reading, writing, and test prep for the ISEE, SAT, English Regents exams, and AP English exams. I currently work as an educational consultant, guiding families through the high school and college application process.

Prior to my position as a High School English teacher, I taught adult learners, many of whom spoke English as a second language, at Nassau Community College. I also taught Composition and Creative Writing classes to freshmen at Purchase College. I witnessed first-hand the need for High School students to be better prepared for university course work. The fact that my students were clearly not college and career ready inspired me to become a Teaching Fellow and teach at the High School level – I knew that with enough humility and determination I could help rectify this inequity.

As a Common Core Learning Institute participant, I have extensive experience unpacking the ELA Common Core exams (Grades 3-8), designing standard-based curriculum, and tutoring elementary and middle school students for the ELA Common Core exams.

I am excited to help you with the following:
1. Reading, writing, and proofreading skills and strategies
2. Preparing you for the ELA Common Core, English Regents, AP Literature, or SAT exams

College Counseling

As a high school teacher to 12th graders, one of my main responsibilities was shepherding students through the college application process. This included researching "safety" and "reach" schools; brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing their college essays and supplemental essays; and completing each facet of the Common application online.

ADHD

For over seven years, I co-taught special education English classes, which were comprised of many students who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. As part of my Masters in Education, I received extensive training on student individualized education plans, behavior modification strategies, and special education law. Furthermore, I have worked as a Focus Teacher at a private school, where I taught students who had ADD/ADHD. I helped these students organize their writing, strengthen their executive functioning skills, and hone their reading skills.

I taught High School English for seven years. One of the courses I taught was an English Regents prep course, which prepared students for the essays, short responses, and multiple choice questions. I have also tutored many students in preparation for this exam. Most often students need assistance in bolstering their vocabulary, recalling important themes from books they have read, and analyzing literary devices and elements.

Thorough, patient, knowledgeable and effective

Barbara was very effective teaching my fourth-grade daughter the organization and process involved in writing a long essay for the ELA test. She was encouraging yet rigorous, and extremely patient. While she was very knowledgeable about how to write for a state test, I could also tell that she was equally familiar and comfortable with teaching how to write book reports, essays, term papers, etc. Definitely a tutor to keep as my daughter gets older! As far as interactions, she arrived early, communicated clearly, and engaged my daughter immediately.
