Hi I am Brenda

I volunteered as a GED math tutor at the Literacy Services of Wisconsin and at East Brook Church's Neighborhood Learning Center for 11 years total. I am very patient and encourage people to read their math. I want them to notice what a cumulative and self-checking science math is. Subtraction can be checked with addition, division can be checked with multiplication, and techniques learned in fractions appear again in percent, ratios, proportion and conversion factors. I want people to know that if they can read they have the tools they need to do well in math whether they like math or not. Math is full of instructions, examples, formulas, and definitions to be read understood then applied to problems. I tell my students to seek clarity on any part of the literature before working on the problems. I want them to be comfortable and able to use what they've read because that literature and any additional literature I give them are there for them when they are alone. I tell them math is a skill and tool like reading and writing that they can certainly learn. Math is not a big menacing person.

I've always been very curious about what things are made, so I majored in Chemistry. Almost everything has a composition, Chemistry can find or even build compositions and Math quantifies the ingredients of a given composition. Chemistry and math really satisfy my curiosity. I worked as a chemist for over 40 years and used math often at work. I looked into volunteer opportunities 17 years ago and found many organizations in need of math tutors. I like math, science, computers, and poetry. I write greeting cards for family, friends and students covering birthdays, holidays, weddings, graduations and anniversaries. I retired recently and want to continue tutoring it allows me to be directly useful to another person. I hope I can be useful and beneficial to you too.

Algebra 1

Since, the GED requires math skills for grades K - 12, tutoring Algebra comprises a significant part of my volunteer tutoring at the High School level. I tutor it regularly 3 days a week to GED, HSE, and ABE students. I am very familiar with variables, algebraic expressions, order of operations, the coordinate plane, slope, factoring, solving simultaneous equations, functions and many other areas of algebra.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

As mentioned above, returning graduates and others have sought help at the centers in their higher level math classes. I've tutored them often in Algebra 2 to improve grades in their classes and prepare for tests within their various programs. I am familiar with Exponential and Logarithmic Equations, Quadratic Functions, Graphing, Solving Systems of Equations in 3 variables, Polynomials, Long Division, Synthetic Division, Conical Sections, and the many other areas of Algebra 2.
Geometry

Geometry

Since, the GED requires math skills for grades K - 12, tutoring Geometry comprises a significant part of my volunteer tutoring. I tutor it regularly 3 days a week to GED, HSE, and ABE students. I am very familiar with geometric figures, perimeter, area, surface area, volume, right triangles, trigonometric functions and the application of algebra to solve geometry problems.
