I provide honest one-on-one science (chemistry, biochemistry, biology, organic chemistry, and physics), math, statistics, and Microsoft Excel/Power BI tutoring to junior high, high school, and college students. I enjoy applying my in depth science knowledge in helping my students learn and improve their test scores. I will a tutor at public or college library or Starbucks. I am also WyzAnt certified as an online tutor.

I am a creative and enthusiastic tutor who will find your strengths and help you apply them in better learning and getting better grades. I will also work with you to prepare for a CLEP test, if needed. I have also been trained in reading tutoring K-8th grade. I also enjoy working with science fair students and on patent projects especially those leading to provisional US patents or research publications or other independent research.

I have a B.S. degree in Chemistry (minor in math) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry as well and have post graduate experience in four different industries agriculture, dye chemistry, scientific biotechnology, and recently water technologies, and consulting. I particularly enjoy tutoring in NMR, IR, mass spectroscopy, and structure elucidation both lab and lecture.

My Tutoring Approach

In my tutoring I try to put myself in my student's place. This way I better empathize with them and understand what methods will help them achieve their goals. If the student needs more feedback, I try to provide that and find ways for them to receive that while they are studying. If there might be an issue with test anxiety, I try to witness that via a short quiz and observe what contributes to the fears.

For math, science, and multiple choice test taking, I recommend timing homework problems or practice tests to determine which areas need more focused study, and thereby better achieve test completion.

I will not tutor on timed assignments or cheating in any form.

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I learned my Excel basics on the job in a business setting. Through real marketing, cost of goods, presentations, graphs, and scientific data, proposals, and problems I learned the hard way how Excel works, how trends can be modeled, predicted and expressed mathematically through formulas. Excel can be used to generate business profits, provide scientific and engineering insights, and discover root causes at a basic level. Power BI (Business Intelligence) is a new wrinkle that enhances Excel further.

Statistics

Statistics

Statistics shows us how to analyze data. Is the data significant? Is it above average? How do we know? Statistics has its own language. What is the mean, mode, variance, factorial, or normal distribution? Do you know how to use your graphing calculator for statistics? There are many websites and apps which can help you step by step with the computations. How about Excel statistics?

Study Skills

While studying for my BS degree in Chemistry and my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry I learned how to study better and how to help others learn in my lab sections and in grading tests and quizzes. I further developed these tutoring skills with Platform Learning in helping students learn to read better and improve algebra skills in the Kansas City and Rockford public schools. Finally I have gained more study skills experience tutoring with Wyzant now for ten years especially reading comprehension, calculator skills, note taking, time management, and test taking skills.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Anyone can improve in solving algebra problems. Whether you are using the quadratic formula, least common multiples, or parabolas you can break down the problem into smaller parts which will lead to the solution. Graphing the equations especially on a graphing calculator, app, or excel will help understand the behavior of the functions and finding the roots. New websites and apps now available will show you how to solve example problems step by step and simultaneously provide feedback. I will show you how to reduce your problem solving time, check your answers, and improve your grades.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

For Algebra 2 having the right calculator and knowing how to use it are important to improving test completion and grades. Do you now how to do synthetic division? What are foci, directrixes, and axes of symmetry? Do you know how to check your answers by graphing? All these questions I will help with and many more and provide you with web sites and apps that will guide you step by step to solving your problems.
Biology,

Through my biology courses in BS and PhD college experience I learned the basics. Then on the job at Monsanto I learned from first rate biologists the fundamentals of plant biology, microbiology, entomology, and agronomy. This knowledge was expanded at Sensient from the study of natural food colors such as anatto cheese color and carmine from the cochineal insect. Then at Thermo-Fisher I learned much more about biology's inner workings and connection to biochemistry.
Calculus,

The main emphases of calculus are two new functions beyond +, -, X, / the derivative (the slope of a line or curve) and the integral (the area under a curve). Both of these functions are easier to calculate than long division. Learning to use your calculator can help you master calculus just like you have mastered your cell phone.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

Chemistry has been a passion of mine since I was ten years old. Chemistry has its own language which few people understand, for example (stoichiometry?, electron affinity?, polyatomic ions?). Many people now do not get enough feedback on their assignments to really learn the subject or improve their grades. By providing the student with a practice test/answers areas for improvement can be immediately identified. Building confidence in chemistry comes from knowing how to solve the problems and recognizing an easy problem.

After obtaining my BS degree in Chemistry I got my PhD in Organic Chemistry after synthesizing part of the ionophore antibiotic monensin and worked at Monsanto Agricultural Products in research and development learning biochemistry, biology, and microbiology on the job for ten years. I worked at Sensient for five years in developing natural colors and then 13 years at Thermo-Fisher scientific making and researching new biochemical reagents. Organic Chemistry,

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry For my academic preparation, I have taken organic chemistry at Iowa State University and advanced organic chemistry at University of Colorado. For three years at Iowa State University I did undergraduate organic chemistry research on flash vacuum pyrolysis. For my Ph. D. research I synthesized part of the antibiotic monensin. I also taught organic chemistry labs. In my industrial experience I researched and synthesized novel agrochemicals and also isolated and determined the structures of microbial natural products. Then I worked in research and development (R&D) and production of food, drug, and cosmetic colors especially from natural sources. Subsequently I applied organic chemistry in manufacturing and R&D related to biotechnology, isolation of proteins, cross-linking, biotins, and chemiluminescence. Recently (until January, 2019) I worked in water technologies R&D including organic ion exchange resins and processes to reduce organic impurities in water. I also have tutored local students in organic chemistry classes. In my tutoring I try to emphasize 3-D molecular modeling on a computer to make it easier for the student to visualize the structures as well as the practical importance of each specific example (i.e. aspirin smelling of acetic acid (vinegar smell) indicates the pill is probably old beyond its shelf life).

Well worth it.

Extremely knowledgeable and will teach you as scientist, not just a student. Just ask. Also responds quickly to questions and messaging.

Summary about clep chemistry exam, he explained the course plan and what needs to be accomplished, srinivas is still is looking into specific questions he may need

Ramadurai, 1 lesson with Marty

new standard

During this tutoring session, I have gotten what I had originally asked Marty to teach me. The unreasonable request to train me to be able to read mass spec at the conformational level was all we did this session. Marty not only has been able to guide me to this ability but also do it in a fashion in a way that I'm not completely clueless. I am now aware of the new hurdles in mass spec and hope to meet his expectations in the next session.

Amer, 10 lessons with Marty

patient and knowledgeable

Marty not only provides cumulative problems through the practice questions, he also makes sure to remind me what the data is NOT representing. All answers should reflect the data provided or collected and my final answers should not mirror it, but be represented by it. Marty also provides questions that I would encounter in the "field". Problems where the data disagrees with say, the molecular formula, or CNMR peaks that would betray the expected shift have been peppered into the course throughout his teachings. I greatly appreciate his time and expertise.

Knowledgeable and aspires for students to do well

He helped me with stereochem class and I actually passed. I was sick for a month and he helped me understand the material that I fell behind on, I asked many tutors and most refused to come near this subject as they regarded it as a tough course and suggested to find someone else. I'M LUCKY TO HAVE FOUND PROF. Marty

Marty was prepared and patient with me

Marty is great, he was prepared for my off beat topic and was super patient even though I have no background in the subject. I will be hiring Marty again that’s for sure

Great

Very kind and helpful, we worked through some lab techniques that I was confused on and he gave me all the resources he referenced during the session which were extremely valuable

Patient and understanding

We ho over my difficult subject and his making sure that I get them right. Also, his making sure that I am confident in my amswer because I always doubt myself. He give advice and short tricks to get the answer right. It does work. So i will definitely get another schedule with professor Marty again.
