Dear Parents: please be prepared to MAKE YOUR CHILD PRACTICE!
No progress can be made unless you do. If you are an adult student, this applies to you as well - please schedule regular times to practice.
I will not guarantee any results if you or your child do not put in the effort.

That said, I am happy to teach those of you who are serious about improving your skills or learning new ones, and I look forward to meeting you, whether online or in person.

Needlework

I've been sewing off and on since I was a child. I can also crochet and cross-stitch. I'm currently teaching one of my younger students sewing and crochet. I'm constantly learning new skills and enjoy helping children and beginners make things they can be proud of.

Business

Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word

Computer

Microsoft Windows,

Microsoft Windows

I have been using Microsoft Windows since childhood. I have taken classes in Windows and computers in general, and I use these skills extensively every day. In previous jobs I was responsible for all computer and software management, and I can load, set up, operate and troubleshoot any Windows OS from 95 to 7.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have taught elementary math as supplementary after-school lessons off and on for several years. I can help your child with beginning to pre-Algebra skills, whichever grade those happen to fall into for your child's school district. My methods are not the same as the school districts'. I focus on actual competency and understanding, and I use old tried and true methods such as flash cards and teaching shortcuts to basic functions (adding, subtracting, etc.)
Handwriting,

Handwriting

I was taught proper handwriting in school for both cursive and print, and penmanship was emphasized at home. I was also trained in drafting when hand-drawing was still done, so I know how to produce good lettering. I have successfully taught several children how to improve their handwriting, and as a result, their grades improved because their teachers could read their work! As a hobby, I also enjoy calligraphy, which involves use of many letter-forms.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I graduated from college with a 3.8 GPA, which would not have been possible if I didn't know how to study. I make high scores on tests, and I know how to organize my studying in order to make those high scores. I can teach someone else those same study methods that have enabled me to do so well academically. For example, the most important aspects of studying for a test are reading comprehension and memorization of facts; because a person must memorize the facts, but if they do not comprehend what they have memorized, they will be unable to extrapolate that knowledge on a test.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

1. I'm the kind of person who reads the dictionary for fun. 2. Whenever my friends don't know a word, they ask me first, because they know I'll probably know it. 3. I always score high on vocabulary tests. 4. I had a college reading level in the 4th grade.

Piano,

Piano

I've been playing piano for 24 years, and I got started teaching in 2014. I've been very successful because I was trained by a master concert pianist. I now teach remotely for a nationally-recognized company as well as a local brick-and-mortar studio. In addition I have a handful of independent students. I teach beginner-to-intermediate students of all ages, although I don't normally take students under age 6 (hard to teach them if they can't sit still). Feel free to ask about my references!

Music

Ear Training,

Ear Training

I first learned ear training in choir in high school, over 20 years ago. As a voice and piano teacher for eight years, I have been teaching this skill to my students as long as I've been teaching. For serious voice students I teach the solfege and hand-signs, along with sight-singing, and for casual students I teach how to learn correct pitches and singing a song from ear/memory. For piano students I teach how to pick out the melody of a song by ear.
General Music,

General Music

I have been learning, playing and teaching music (off and on) for twenty years. I can play a variety of instruments, and I have taught private children's piano lessons. I also regularly incorporate music into my preschool class.

ADHD,

I have had ADD all of my life and have learned, and continue to use, various coping skills to ensure I'm an effective person. I have also worked with ADD/ADHD preschool children and I know some of what works and what does not work in teaching them. I'm eager to teach these coping skills to others so that they, to, can be effective.
