My name is Jill. I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Elementary Education and cum laude from SUNY Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. In addition, I have 3 years of academic study in Special Education from Lock Haven University, where I was inducted into PSY CHI, an academic honor society. I taught in school- based programs for 25 years before transitioning to online tutoring three years ago.
I have over 20 years experience teaching both Special Education and general education students in the classroom and more recently in small and large groups online. I have been successfully tutoring 1:1 for the past 3 years with elementary-aged students in math, reading, and writing. Homework help is area of expertise in which I am uniquely able to pinpoint why a student is struggling with a specific skill and quickly provide resources to increase understanding of the material and confidence in the student that they can do it!
I specialize in teaching those skills that students need to be successful in life, such as mental math strategies and methods that help students become strong readers, such as decoding unfamiliar words, reading comprehension, and making connections with a text. Additionally, I am children's book author with publishing experience, and enjoy teaching writing skills. Teaching students how to plan and write paragraphs, stories, and essays is an area in which I have had great success.
I believe that every student is capable of learning, and that there are endless ways to engage them in the learning process. Gaining new knowledge can be a reward in itself, and those "light bulb" moments when I student finally "gets it" are what teaching is all about. I welcome working relationships with parents, and will provide homework and enrichment activities, if desired. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have and I will return your call promptly.
