In addition, I have 3 years of academic study in Special Education from Lock Haven University, where I was inducted into PSY CHI, an academic honor society. I taught in school- based programs for 25 years before transitioning to online tutoring three years ago.

I have over 20 years experience teaching both Special Education and general education students in the classroom and more recently in small and large groups online. I have been successfully tutoring 1:1 for the past 3 years with elementary-aged students in math, reading, and writing. Homework help is area of expertise in which I am uniquely able to pinpoint why a student is struggling with a specific skill and quickly provide resources to increase understanding of the material and confidence in the student that they can do it!

I specialize in teaching those skills that students need to be successful in life, such as mental math strategies and methods that help students become strong readers, such as decoding unfamiliar words, reading comprehension, and making connections with a text. Additionally, I am children's book author with publishing experience, and enjoy teaching writing skills. Teaching students how to plan and write paragraphs, stories, and essays is an area in which I have had great success.

I believe that every student is capable of learning, and that there are endless ways to engage them in the learning process. Gaining new knowledge can be a reward in itself, and those "light bulb" moments when I student finally "gets it" are what teaching is all about. I welcome working relationships with parents, and will provide homework and enrichment activities, if desired. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have and I will return your call promptly.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Elementary Education. The majority of my teaching for the past quarter century has been with students K-6. I am experienced in, and comfortable with, teaching any subject (reading writing math), working with both Special Education and general education students, and have taught extensively in-person and on-line. I do my best to make learning fun and positive for the student so that they want to work with me and in fact, look forward to our sessions. I follow the state standards for each student's grade level, as well as use school assessments and input from parents and teachers to plan each student's lessons individually, using media and materials that best fit each student's learning style.

During my 25+ years of teaching and tutoring experience, I have worked with elementary students of all ages. I specialize in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade math, with a focus on multiplication facts, long division, word problems, fractions, decimals, and mental math. I believe that math can and should be enjoyable and functional, and do my best to share my love of math with students who may be struggling.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from SUNY Polytechnic Institute and 48 hours of undergraduate courses in Special Education. I have also worked for the majority of my career with students of all ages with ASD. I employ ABA principles & methods, as well as Explicit Instruction strategies (I Do-We Do-You Do). I frequently use shaping, errorless learning & plenty of positive reinforcement in my sessions, as many students have had negative experiences with learning in the past that impact their ability to learn in the present.
