I am a university professor and scientist with a Ph.D. in Microbiology and numerous interdisciplinary postdoctoral and 10+ years of experience teaching university-level (undergraduate and graduate levels) Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, and Public Health. I also have scientific research experience, and ongoing scientific projects, studying the immunology and physiology of the human respiratory health system when exposed to different contaminants we often encounter in our environments.

Teaching and sharing knowledge are among my purposes as a professional and person! For this purpose, I seek to help students self-discovered themselves and go beyond their comfort zones to master the topics of Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, and Public Health.

I have 10+ years of experience teaching in higher education in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, and Public Health is complemented by interdisciplinary training: Ph.D. in Microbiology (Univ. of Puerto Rico-Medical Sciences Campus), a postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Health Sciences (Johns Hopkins University School of Public), science teaching fellowship (American Society for Microbiology) and training in data science, genomic data science, systems biology, and bioinformatics (Johns Hopkins University, Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, and the University of California at San Diego, respectively).

My teaching philosophy is centered on creating inclusive, psychologically supportive, and transformative learning environments where students receive validation, and guidance. Mistakes are allowed because they are also part of the learning.

My Experience: I am an educator and scientist with over 15 years of experience implementing biostatistical workflows in scientific research projects to address respiratory and environmental health challenges affecting society. My Training: After completing my PhD in Microbiology (2010) from the University of Puerto Rico – Medical Sciences Campus, I followed upon postdoctoral training in Environmental Health Sciences and Epidemiological Studies from the Bloomberg School of Public Health of Johns Hopkins University (2013). I further trained in biostatistics, data sciences, system biology, and bioinformatics (implementing R, Python, and Matlab computational languages) at Johns Hopkins University, Icahn School of Medicine, and UC San Diego. Also, I proactively pursued formal training in pedagogical best practices. This pedagogical training includes a Science Teaching Fellowship (2014-2015) from the American Society of Microbiology. Since then, I've cultivated a teaching philosophy centered on creating inclusive, psychologically supportive, and transformative learning environments where students receive validation, guidance, and support to face educational challenges.

Another Great Session

Dr Felix is so helpful with bioinformatics topics. He was able to give me real world examples in laymen’s terms so I could feel confident in the subject matter and complete my assignments. I recommend him to anyone seeking a tutor.

Amazing!!!

Felix is so patient and knowledgeable and really does his best to help you learn and understand the concepts. He's not someone who will give you the answer straightaway but it is definitely for the better since it helps YOU to understand the content and make the connections with his guidance, and the content will stick around in your brain longer. After having him teach me about the various pathways (glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, PPP, TCA, etc.) I managed to raise my exam score by 30 points between exams! Would definitely recommend taking lessons with Felix :D

Beyond helpful!

Dr Felix is so nice and understanding. I came into the session very frustrated after a week of struggling with a bioinformatics assignment on my own and left feeling much more confident in the content of my class. After a two hour session, he had helped me understand not only the “how” but the “why” of the assignment. I would recommend him to anyone in need of help.

I enjoyed learning with Felix R!

Felix R is unquestionably well-versed in crafting persuasive proposals with a strong focus on constructing a compelling narrative. Our session started with his question: What are your research goals, and what do you hope to achieve through this endeavor? and that kept me thinking and revisiting many of my methods.

Amazing teacher

Dr. Rivera-Mariani was extremely knowledgeable about immunology and able to help me despite many other tutors feeling uncomfortable answering my questions. He had immediate responses to my questions and asked questions during the tutoring session to allow me to apply the information I learned. Dr. Rivera-Mariani also looked at the lecture slides I sent him prior to the tutoring session so he knew what I was working with. In the hour I spent with him I was able to learn and clarify what my class had be learning for 3 weeks as well as fill in the gaps despite my countless hours of reading. I will be booking future tutoring session and I highly recommend Dr. Rivera-Mariani.
