I am a mathematics college professor and a certified tutor with over 15 years experience of teaching and tutoring college students, including non-traditional college students (i.e., returning adult students) and students with learning disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia. I specialize in tutoring students taking business calculus. I am a patient tutor who enjoys breaking down business calculus concepts, solving business calculus problems, and helping students build confidence and enthusiasm for business calculus and mathematics in general. I have a proven track record of helping students improve exam and course grades in business calculus. I am here to help, and you no longer have to change your major or worry about not being able to graduate on time because of business calculus.

+++ Recent Triumphs +++
I tutored several students from The University of Miami (U Miami) and helped them improve course grades, build confidence in solving business calculus and business statistics problems, and successfully complete MAS 110 (Quantitative Applications in Business) and MAS 201 (Introduction to Business Statistics) .

In addition, I have considerable experience teaching and tutoring several college courses, namely college algebra, precalculus, survey of calculus, applied calculus, traditional calculus, calculus for the life and social sciences, AP calculus, AP statistics, finite math, discrete math, and statistics (I am proficient in StatCrunch, the TI 83/84 calculator, and Microsoft Excel).

Besides teaching and tutoring, I conduct scientific research on the teaching and learning of important ideas in business calculus and traditional calculus such as the concept of the derivative. In fact, some of my research publications have focused on students' understanding of optimization problems, marginal cost, marginal revenue, marginal profit, elasticity of demand, and related rates problems, respectively.

Statistics

I have over eleven years of teaching and tutoring statistics. Specifically, I have taught and tutored students taking introductory statistics. Topics I have taught and tutored include descriptive statistics, sampling techniques (e.g. systemic sampling, random sampling, simple random sampling, stratified sampling, and cluster sampling), probability, the normal distribution, and the binomial distribution. I have also taught and tutored hypothesis testing, including confidence intervals, one sample t tests, two sample t tests, regression analysis, the chi squared test, and one-way ANOVA (analysis of variance). I am proficient in using StatCrunch and the TI 83/84 graphing calculator. I have a proven track record of helping students understand difficult statistical concepts, in addition to helping them improve their course grades.

Algebra 2

I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring Algebra 2. Specifically, I have taught and tutored students when working with linear functions, quadratic functions, polynomial functions, rational functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, proving/verifying trigonometric identities, solving trigonometric equations, solving quadratic equations, solving linear equations, solving inequalities, solving systems of equations, solving systems of inequalities, and solving linear programming problems. In addition, I have a PhD in the teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics, something that helps me in my tutoring as I understand that different students learn in different ways.
Calculus,

I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring different flavors of calculus. This includes calculus for business students (also known as business calculus), regular calculus (also known as engineering calculus), and calculus for biology/pre-medical students (also known as calculus for the life sciences). I have experience tutoring students taking applied calculus or survey of calculus. I have a proven track record of helping students improve course grades and understand difficult calculus concepts, including calculating derivatives (using the power rule, the product rule, the quotient rule, the chain rule, logarithmic differentiation, and implicit differentiation), solving optimization problems (i.e. problems dealing with finding minimums and maximums such as maximum profit, maximum revenue, and minimum cost), solving related rates problems, solving problems involving calculating areas bounded by two curves/functions, and calculating and interpreting marginal change (i.e., marginal cost, marginal revenue, and marginal profit). Furthermore, I have a PhD in the teaching and learning of mathematics at the undergraduate level with a focus on the teaching and learning of calculus.

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor.

I tried working with a number of tutors on the wyzant platform in search of a business calculus tutor. While it was easy to find calculus tutors, it was almost impossible to find someone who had the knowledge of the business application side of calculus. I feel like I totally lucked out by finding Sydney who happens to have a PHD in math education and who's research focuses on the teaching of calculus. As someone with ADHD, I found it very helpful that Sydney wrote everything on the his white boards versus other tutors who prefer typing which makes it impossible to follow along. I spent 2 weeks intensely prepping for my final and received an A in the class.

The Best Math Tutor

Sydney worked with me on my Business Calculus class for over a month every day and ensured I understood the material to do well on my exams and homework. While I did not think I would do well and was focused on passing, Sydney's patience and detailed help allowed me to earn an "A." I am very thankful for his support and recommend all Business Calculus students to work with him; he is everything a teacher should be.

Patient and Extremely Helpful

Learned more from a single lesson then I’ve learned in an entire two weeks of class. Definitely would recommend Sydney, his knowledge of the topics are straight forward and make the probelms significantly less scary.

Great first session

What got a good start on the problems that I needed to complete, and scheduled a longer session for the following day. Sydney offered to work longer this time, but I couldn’t.

Very patient tutor

Sydney has helped me immensely in calculus as I've been struggling to grasp some of the concepts. He explains everything very clearly and checks in regularly to make sure I understand how/why certain steps are taken when solving equations! I couldn't have asked for a better tutor!

incredibly helpful

I was very unsure of myself going into my midterm but now I have great confidence in my ability. Mr Sydney clearly explained the problem thoroughly to the point where there was no confusion. I would definitely recommend him to anyone seeking math help

Knowledgable, patient, and respectful.

Sydney is a excellent tutor. He is knowledgable and very patient. He never makes me feel inadequate or stupid but will go back and repeat as many times as I need without getting frustrated. He knows his stuff really well and can work with any problem on the fly, so I don't have to send the homework 3 days ahead as some tutors have requested. Usually, I have a hard time finding a tutor I feel really good working with, so Sydney was a great find for me.
