The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery. - Mark Van Doren

Hello, and thank you for considering me! I am a Cambridge University CELTA-certified English/ESL teacher, a magna cum laude graduate of Tufts University, and a dedicated educator. I have tutored and taught adults, youth and children in private lessons, the public school system and through nonprofit educational organizations for more than twelve years.

As a teacher, I have three important priorities: 1) to help students to improve their English (or Spanish) communication and comprehension skills, 2) to build their self-confidence in speaking, reading and writing, and 3) most importantly, to enjoy learning. I care deeply about my students' interests and goals, and that guides what and how we study together. I believe that learning should be interesting, challenging and fun, and I want my students to love learning as much as I love teaching. I tutor online and I also travel throughout San Francisco and the Peninsula and offer classes at a discounted rate in Pacifica. During the restrictions of the shelter-in-place order, I am tutoring online only.

As I get to know a student's learning style and personality, I see how each student learns best and I adapt my teaching style to find the best fit for each student. I'm a flexible and creative tutor, and I enjoy finding the most effective teaching methods for each of my students. I offer a free one-hour consultation meeting, so I can learn more about potential students and they can learn more about me before deciding to study with me.

As a professionally trained ESL teacher, I can teach students all aspects of the English language including speaking, conversation and public presentation, reading and listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing, English literature, and TOEFL test preparation. Please read my subject descriptions for more information on how I can help students in each area.

"Let's eat Grandma!" "Let's eat, Grandma!" Commas save lives. - Anonymous I am trained in the Guided Discovery method of grammar teaching, in which students learn grammar in a meaningful context. Elementary Science

Science is a fascinating subject that can easily be made dull by an uninspiring teacher. As an elementary science educator, my mission is to transmit a sense of wonder and discovery to my students. I find science to be an exciting and fascinating subject and I convey that enthusiasm to my students, so that they too can get excited about studying science.

Phonics,

Phonics

I am an experienced English/ Language Arts teacher, tutor and Academic Intervention specialist. I have successfully used both phonics-based and whole language approaches to help Kindergarten through 4th grade students improve their word pronunciation and reading or pre-reading skills. (This includes word decoding or "sounding out" skills for readers, and letter/sound relationships for pre-readers.) I am experienced at working with pre-readers, early readers and challenged readers. I use a fun approach, linking phonics to picture-books for younger readers and choosing interesting age and reading-level appropriate materials for older readers still struggling with phonics. For pre-readers, I emphasize phonemic awareness, including such skills as perceiving and reproducing rhyming sounds and distinguishing between short and long vowel sounds. I do not teach phonics in isolation, as an end in itself, but rather as a key that unlocks the door to better reading skills and more pleasure in and understanding of reading. For my students, I foster success and enjoyment in both reading and speaking, using phonics as an important tool in the process. (A Note to Parents and Guardians: If your child is still struggling significantly with phonics in the 3rd grade, diagnostic educational testing is generally recommended to clarify the source(s) of the difficulty before or soon after beginning tutoring.)

I am an experienced English Language Arts teacher and am familiar with the California State Language Arts Standards. I am experienced at teaching all aspects of Language Arts, with a special emphasis on reading comprehension and essay and creative writing. I have a specialty in the area of Academic Intervention. There are many approaches to teaching students to read skillfully. As a Language Arts teacher, I am experienced with students of different learning styles. I can help students understand their learning style(s) and learn reading strategies that work especially well for them. For English As a Second Language Students: As an English as a Second Language teacher, I can teach you techniques to help you to better understand what you read. Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I match my teaching of vocabulary to your needs and interests as a student. I teach students strategies for learning and remembering vocabulary. Students learn new vocabulary best when it is taught in a meaningful context and when they can practice using it in speaking, reading and writing. One amazing thing about the English language is how much vocabulary it has. The English language is always changing and evolving. New words are constantly being invented. This makes studying English vocabulary fascinating but also confusing at times. I can help! As a native English speaker, a university graduate and an avid reader on many topics, I have an extensive vocabulary. I can help students understand the subtle differences in meaning and usage between similar words.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

As an English Language Arts teacher and tutor and a grammar expert, I can teach students strategies for performing their best on the ACT English section. The ACT English section addresses English grammar and usage as well as rhetorical skills. As an experienced grammar teacher, I can help students sharpen their grammar skills so that they can quickly eliminate incorrect answers and recognize correct ones. In the rhetorical skills section, students need to both read critically and to think like a writer in order to perform well. I teach students how to quickly grasp the main idea of each ACT English passage and how to distinguish important from irrelevant details.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

As an English Language Arts teacher and tutor, and an avid and broad-ranging reader, I can teach students strategies for performing their best on the ACT reading section. The reading section is challenging. Students have to read quickly and efficiently in order to get through all of the questions in the allotted time. I help students address the test strategically to maximize their strengths and address their weaker areas, thus speeding up their overall performance and increasing their likelihood of getting a high score. I train students to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant details so they can get the gist of the reading passages more quickly. For students who are not fast readers, I can teach scanning and skimming techniques that will enable them to correctly answer questions under the time-pressure of the test. I also help students recognize and familiarize themselves with the types of subtly phrased test questions and answers that can be misleading if not read carefully. Armed with these strategies, students can approach the test with greater confidence and perform more efficiently. Because the college admissions testing process can be stressful for students, I make sure that our test prep sessions are both relaxed and productive. I let students know that I'm on their side and am invested in their success.

I use student-centered methods, helping students connect personally with what they are studying to make learning more interesting and meaningful to students. I personalize lessons to help students build on their strengths and turn those strengths into strategies to address their challenges. I can help with all aspects of writing English papers: developing and organizing thoughts and opinions more clearly, finding evidence to support conclusions, and editing for both style and content. Everest National Park. My undergraduate studies emphasized Asia, with a particular focus on ritual and sustainable development. Buddhist Studies and Mindfulness: I have been a practicing Buddhist and a student of mindfulness for more than twenty years. I have attended several mindfulness and meditation retreats both in the U.S. and overseas, including retreats with the renowned Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. I have also done college coursework in Buddhism and Comparative Religion. I have read widely in Buddhist studies, both from the original discourses of the Buddha and from authors such as Thich Nhat Hanh, the Dalai Lama, Pema Chodron, and others. In keeping with Buddhist tradition, I offer Buddhist studies on a suggested donation basis. Therefore, my published rate is fully negotiable. I am happy to help students learn more about Buddhism and Buddhist practice, so studies are available at a very low cost to students with genuine financial need.
Social Studies

Social Studies

As an experienced elementary educator, I particularly enjoy tutoring social studies. As a Language Arts educator, I have worked extensively with Language Arts curricula that incorporate social studies material. In addition, as Lead Teacher of a San Francisco after school program, I created a multi-disciplinary curriculum for my students that incorporated literacy with social studies, science and the arts. I have found that when students can connect what they are studying in social studies with their own lives, they find it much more interesting. I teach social studies as a living, vital subject that helps students understand and relate to society and to the world around them, rather than as just a collection of facts and dates. I encourage my students to think deeply about social studies, to form their own opinions and to share their perspectives. I challenge my students to ask and answer questions that increase their comprehension and engagement. Through this type of dialogue, inquiry, and critical thinking, social studies takes on a clearer and deeper meaning for students.

Phonics,

I am an experienced English/Language Arts tutor and teacher. Much of my experience has been in Language Arts Academic Intervention, working with elementary school students performing below grade level. I believe in the potential of every student and I view all of my students as individuals, never as numbers on a scale. I am a patient, friendly, and enthusiastic educator with a good sense of humor. I have worked with students with various learning differences including mild to moderate ADHD, autism and other "learning disabilities". I have successfully worked with many students who were performing below grade level, including students with IEP's. I have also worked with several gifted students with learning differences. I believe that everyone can enjoy learning, and that it is my job as an educator to help students discover their unique learning styles and build on their strengths to address their challenges. I enjoy customizing curricula and helping students find learning strategies that meet their particular learning needs, so they can rediscover their joy in learning. Please note: While I have worked with many students with learning differences, I am not a certified special education teacher. For students with moderate to severe dyslexia, severe ADHD, or non-verbal/minimally verbal forms of autism, I would recommend seeking tutoring from a dyslexia specialist, certified special education teacher, or speech or other educational therapist, as appropriate.

The Needs of Her Students are Her Top Priority

Marie is an outstanding tutor who had an excellent rapport with my son. She is very caring and patient and makes sure that the needs of her students are met. When I was looking for a tutor for my son, I was impressed with Marie's credentials, her responsiveness, and her detailed explanation on how she would be able to help my son prepare for the SAT/ACT Reading, English, and Writing examinations. Marie's style of teaching is very organized, thorough, and methodical. She was able to provide great test taking strategies which helped my son achieve excellent scores. She also helped him to become a better writer. Marie is very friendly and personable and my son enjoyed having her as his tutor!

A True professional

We’ve had Marie work with our seven-year-old with a learning disability on reading and writing for a few sessions. From the initial interview and the subsequent lesson plans and summaries, it is apparent that she is a true professional on this: knowledgeable, methodical, and patient. We feel lucky having found her and look forward to continued progress on our child’s learning.

Truly Talented!

Marie is a gifted teacher with a knack for understanding a child's learning style and an intellectual curiosity about learning which is truly inspiring. She showed more patience with our foster child from West Africa than any person who has ever worked with him and spent hours getting to know his language and structuring lessons around his strengths and weaknesses. He came into his own as a student on her watch, and it was remarkable to see.

Exceptional Spanish Tutor

My son's tutoring experience with Marie has been exceptional. He recently received an A- for his 6 week marking period in Spanish 3/4, which is a big improvement from his Spanish 1/2 grades last year. And while I am happy with his recent grade, I am more pleased by the fact that my son is feeling more confident and engaged in learning Spanish, and as a result, he is more focused on learning a subject that does not come easy to him. Marie has been able to make her lessons challenging and engaging for my son without making Spanish feel boring and like work. She is patient, and really cares about her students. I would recommend Marie as a tutor for any student looking to learn and improve their Spanish.
