The reason I love working as a tutor is because I have had phenomenal experiences with my tutors in the past. I know the feeling of having a topic be crystal clear after working with a challenging, motivational tutor. I have been a full-time science and math tutor for seven years, and have experience with students ranging from ages 14-45. Topics such as biology, anatomy, or genetics can be very dense at first, and I understand the value of being able to explain concepts in multiple ways from different angles. I make every lesson personalized, and I always look for feedback on how my teaching can be improved, but also what I am doing well and should continue.

Science is fun! Almost like an onion, different science topics can always be unwrapped in more and more detail. Over my five years of tutoring experience, I have developed a sense of how deep to dive on a particular topic in order to help a student best understand the concepts. Sometimes delving more deeply into a topic is just what a student needs to understand and succeed.

I love to teach, and I am motivated by the successes and improvements of my students. I am willing to meet in any convenient location, and would love to help you succeed!

SAT Math

The SAT math section is a fast paced, stimulating section of the test. I focus my SAT Math lessons on two things: 1) Focusing on understanding problems on the page, and the steps to successfully answering each one. 2) Building or rebuilding the underlying skills that students need to answer more complex problems that draw on several content areas. Through both of these focuses my students score better, learn more, and are able to build upon these math skills for further learning.

Science

ACT Science,

ACT Science

The ACT science portion is often times the most difficult for students. The section is very fast (40 questions, 35 minutes) and is divided into three sections: data representation, research summaries, and conflicting viewpoints. Often times previous science knowledge is not an indicator of ACT science success, because the portion is about scientific reading and reasoning, not base scientific knowledge. I specialize in communicating science research and writing to the public, and I understand how difficult reading studies and interpreting figures can be. I teach students how to quickly and efficiently interpret data, and how to understand which portions of a passage are useful.

Test Preparation

Accuplacer,

Accuplacer

Math: The math test was overhauled in 2016 and now more closely resembles courses that students will take during their freshman year. There are three large sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS), Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF), and Arithmetic. I have been working with math students through calculus for over eight years, and we will cover each of the three sections during the duration of our test preparation. Writing: The writing test asks students to efficiently, intelligently, and correctly edit multiparagraph text. The test is comprised of two large sections. First, is the 'Expression of Ideas' which asks students to better develop and organize a piece of text. Secondly is the 'Standard English Conventions' which covers the basics of English grammar. As a published academic author and copywriter, I have the experience to work with students in BOTH sections - they are equally important. Reading: The main goal of the Accuplacer Reading test is to test students' ability to derive meaning from text. This applies to words and phrases in both short and extended contexts. I help students to not just memorize patterns and vocab, but to actually develop a suite of strategies to attack each question in a manner that is personalized to them.

Extremely Helpful in Biology and Chemistry for Undergrad

I have seen Patrick fairly consistently since my first year of college (I am a junior in college now), and I have found him very helpful in a variety of different topics. I have sought out tutoring from him for Intro Bio, Microbiology, Immunology, Gen Chem I, Gen Chem II, Genetics, and Physiology. He is really good at breaking down topics while also giving me space to figure out questions independently so that I actually learn the content. He has also been super helpful in terms of helping me learn how read scientific papers efficiently and how to interpret the results of scientific papers. I cannot recommend Patrick enough especially if you're an undergrad Biology student! I have tried many other science tutors but Patrick has been by far the most helpful.

So helpful!

Patrick worked with my daughter on her first semester college math class where she felt she understood nothing and by the end of the session, she felt so confident with the material!

Fantastic MCAT tutor!

I reached out to Patrick because I had no idea how to get started with MCAT studying, there was so much information online it was hard to figure out the "best method" and what study tools to use. Patrick helped me immensely in that he was able to explain the process of studying and create a very detailed study schedule. He also created several spreadsheets tracking my progress as I go through content review, This is extremely useful as a way to identify areas of weakness and to generate future study plans based on those areas. Furthermore Patrick knows the content very well, and more importantly he can explain it. He is very very patient and really allows me to think through problems. He also has many different resources and study methods which are very useful.

Great First Impression

I was looking for an ACT tutor for my daughter. Patrick got back to me right away, met with me to describe his process, and then took over from there with my daughter. He set up a session with her that worked for her schedule, and she was actually excited about doing this prep work after meeting with him. Looking forward to having her continue working with him over the next couple of months.

Insightful and patient tutor!!

Patrick helped me so much with my challenging genetics problems. He was so knowledgeable about any topic I threw at him. I would definitely recommend him to anyone that is struggling with genetics courses! We covered topics like genetic sequencing, DNase-seq, RNase-seq, and gene mapping.

Knowledgeable and reliable MCAT Tutor!

I came to Patrick to help improve my MCAT studying and scores. I initially spoke to Patrick to understand where I was and we developed a study plan that worked well for me. Throughout our lessons, Patrick answered the questions I had about the material and went over concepts (Bio, Biochem, Physics, Chem) that I was unsure about. He provided great analogies to help me understand difficult concepts. The plan we made was working as long as I was putting in the work and effort. My scores definitely started increasing and I was very grateful for his guidance. We worked together until leading up to my MCAT test date. I definitely recommend working with Patrick because he is very knowledgeable about the material as well as taking the test itself. Thank you so much Patrick!
