I am semi-retired after 30+ years in journalism, including 23 years at The Post-Standard in Syracuse. During my career, I honed my writing, research, editing, reading, grammatical, spelling and many other English-related skills on a daily basis and I feel that that experience gives me excellent credentials to tutor students on related subjects. I am also a skilled computer user and especially like working with seniors who want to learn about the internet from a patient and understanding teacher.

Over the years, I was an occasional substitute teacher and during my newspaper career, I mentored a number of young journalists.

I believe my English and computer skills would be invaluable to students of any age, and I welcome the opportunity to tutor students in the sometimes complicated world of English, including ESL and ESOL. As you can see in my profile, I am also certified in a number of other subjects. I have worked extensively with Windows operating systems, including Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

I am also available to work with students in the art of successful proofreading (spelling, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation) of papers, reports, journals or stories.

If you are looking to brush up on your computer skills - or simply learn your way around Facebook - I can help you with those kinds of things as well.

Computer

General Computer,

General Computer

As a journalist (recently-retired) for nearly three decades at a major metropolitan daily newspaper, it was essential to know my way around a computer. I have a broad and workable knowledge of Windows, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 and feel very comfortable in teaching someone how to navigate through these operating systems. Every day, I discover something new on my home computer and look forward to sharing that excitement with others. I understand that older folks, especially, might feel slightly embarrassed or uncomfortable because they know so little about all of this confusing and rapidly changing technology, but I'm nearly a senior myself and therefore I understand their feelings and have the time and patience to guide them through the maze. I've also kept up with just about everything (Twitter, Facebook, 4Square and the rest) so I can help younger folks (and their parents who want to understand and be involved with what their kids are doing online) as well!
Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows

I have worked with Windows since it was created by Microsoft and know the system inside and out. I would have no problem helping others learn to navigate its sometimes confusing pathways. I look forward to helping you or your student learn how to work with Windows.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I am tutoring a woman from Brazil in ESL and using “Basic American Grammar and Usage, An ESL/EFL Handbook” (by Marcel Danesi, PhD) as the basis for my curriculum. I also have her reading newspapers and doing some online ESL worksheets and drills that focus on grammar and sentence structure. I earned my bachelor's degree in English and taught elementary students basic reading and language for a time. As a 30-year journalist, my English skills are impeccable and I feel that I am an excellent tutor for someone struggling with the many quirks of the English language. I am extremely patient and a kind and understanding teacher, something that's important when dealing with immigrants, regardless of their age.

Proofreading

I am a professional journalist who has written and edited copy for 30 years. I have received numerous local, state and national awards for my work, which is always clean and efficient. I am a stickler for accuracy in spelling, grammar and punctuation, and I rarely miss an error; even when many others have "proofread" something, I will find mistakes.

During my 30-year career in journalism, I never used spell check and yet I had a reputation among editors for always turning in extremely "clean" copy. I still make a living by writing, and I still avoid the pitfalls of spell check. You will never find a misspelled word in anything I have written because on the rare occasion that I'm not sure how to spell something, I look it up in a dictionary!
