I have been an educator since 1987 when I discovered the joy of helping a shy young woman discover her ability to excel. I’ve pursued this passion formally and informally with clients from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds from third grade through college. It is my hope that my students will find a passion for learning and gain skill sets that they can use in all their endeavors as well as learning the specific information they come to me for.

While I specialize in Core Math and testing skills (SAT, ACT, GED, TOEFL, etc), my degrees and experience as a private tutor and college adjunct have given me a wide breadth of skills which I have brought to bear tutoring math, science, history, English, and social studies. I have, over the past decade, put a lot of focus on SAT and ACT, which many colleges and universities are phasing out; but the same key skills - logic, organization, time management, and reading comprehension, to name a few - continue to be valuable assets for my students' futures. Each individual has their own way of processing information and retaining knowledge, and my reward is finding a tailored lesson plan to guide my students to greater success.

I would love to talk with you more about your child's needs. Please feel free to email me with questions.

History

Anthropology,

Anthropology

I received my M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2009. I taught ANT 101, Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, as an adjunct for the College of Southern Nevada from Spring 2010 - Spring of 2012. While the course focus was cultural anthropology, material covered an introduction to all four subfields and discussed how archaeology, linguistics, physical and cultural approaches were interwoven and necessary for a fuller understanding of human behavior.
Religion

Religion

I mastered in Anthropology specializing in Online Communities and Religion. My course of study covered classes in religion, folklore (often directly related to religious beliefs), and ritual. My M.A. thesis focused on the Zoroastrian global community's use of the Internet to preserve religious values, discuss change and adaptation to globalization, and the challenges of being a community of approximately 250,000 spread across the globe. I've looked at the unique difficulties the second generation of immigrants face in preserving their religious beliefs and how religion can often play a central role in influencing adaptation strategies. I am particularly interested in the value of ritual and symbolism in various belief systems in order to understand both universal approaches and the unique strategies of individual groups such as the White Power movement, Zoroastrianism, the Hopi, and Evangelical groups. Religious communities continue to utilize modern technology establishing online churches, temples, meditation spaces and preservation of sacred scripture. These are fascinating adaptations, and in striving to succeed in a changing world, they may seek to spread their worldview and shape the communities around them. This makes understanding the value and influence of religion in daily life an important and critical area of study.

Archaeology

My Master's degree in Anthropology from the University of Nevada Las Vegas included several archaeology courses: Intro to World Archaeology (A); a Core semester class of Archaeology and Physical Anthropology - an oral exam in addition to several written essays was required in the first year for continued enrollment in the program (A); a semester of Current Problems in Archaeology (A-). These courses give me a solid foundation in theoretical and applied archaeology.

Great Tutor

Helen is an excellent tutor. She is very thorough and took careful measures in helping my daughter grasp a concept. She really made her very comfortable during the online lesson. I liked hoe she was straight forward and to the point. Great tutor that helped my daughter so much.

Excellent Tutor!

Helen is tutoring my 8th grade grandson. She immediately identified his area of struggle and provided helpful tips for immediate improvement. The workbooks she recommended, and research suggestions have been helpful in getting him back on track. His teacher noticed a significant improvement after the very first session. Helen is patient, attentive and resourceful. My teenage grandson feels more confident in his writing and always looks forward to working with her. I highly recommend Helen to anyone looking to improve their writing skills.

Excellent Tutor!

Helen brings a wealth of experience to tutoring. From our first discussions about what our son needed help with (English) and before we even met, I could tell she knew exactly the type of help he needed. After the first session, Helen developed a plan of action to help our son improve his reading and comphrehension skills. Patient, experienced, compassionate, and knowledgeable. HIGHLY recommended.

Helen is excellent!

Helen helped our daughter who was not doing well in chemistry to finally understand the subject matter and perform well on a test. Helen was flexible with us in scheduling and even helped us on a day she normally has off. Thank you so much Helen!

Great Tutor

Helen has been really helpful in showing me how to do some of the difficult problems. A lot of the math I have not had in a long time slowly coming back to me. Preparing to take the GRE in May and this is helping me to get a head start.

Excellent 1st Impression and 1st Lesson

This was our first time for any tutoring for our son. Our son is 4.3 gpa student, AP classes, Varsity/Captain of wrestling and Football team, but his weakness is with taking test especially the ACT and SAT. I have always been skeptical with tutors, especially with searching for one through the internet, Through wyzant we were able to find Helen G. who seemed to be a great match for ACT and SAT review for our son. With his 1st lesson with ACT test review, my son already felt he learned a lot and was so excited to continue with next session. Helen was patient, knowledgeable and was attentive to my son's concerns and issues when it came to reviewing, reading and understanding. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND Helen to anyone that is looking for help for their child or even themselves. We plan to continue with SAT prepping as well as College application essays. Thank you Helen, we appreciate your quickness to respond and your flexibility to work with our son.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Helen is the college application couch for my daughter. My daughter wrote about 14 application essays and Helen review them, gave valuable recommendations. She is knowledgeable and helpful. And she is very honest too. I have booked her for 2 hours, working in the library with my daughter. I was not there. They finished earlier, only use 1 hour and 30 min. She have texted me about that they have finished and only billed me the time she used with my daughter. She is a great tutor!!!

Initial session

This was my daughter's first session with Helen and I believe it was beneficial. They discussed poetry by Emily Dickinson to prepare my daughter for a literature assignment. I was pleased with my daughter's feed back about the session, in which she indicated Helen insisted she be equally engaged in the discussion. This challenged my daughter to think critically and discuss her thoughts; and did not allow her to be "carried" through the session. My daughter found the session challenging and the instruction valuable. -Thx
