My name is Elizabeth. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, Minor in English/Creative Writing from the University of Central Florida. As a Writing Consultant in the Writing Center, I assisted students in editing their essays. I became a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. After graduation, I edited master's program papers, became a free-lance copy editor, and edited a young adult fiction novel. In 2005, I began tutoring one on one and have continued to this day. I specialize in 2nd - 7th grade language arts/reading and math. Students are assigned to me by a provider who consults the public school system on students in need of assistance.
Tutoring can be fun. Please read on and find out how. Word problems not your cup of tea? Often, a problem appears difficult due to large numbers or fractions. Hint: Change large numbers to small, like 2 and 5, and then solve; using the same mathematical operation, solve using the numbers in the problem. Do you know your multiplication facts? How about a game of multiplication bingo? We can create jingles to jog the memory: Roses are red, violets are blue, 6 times 7 is 42. Simplify multi-digit multiplication by color coding the steps: First, multiply the 1's in the multiplier times each digit in the multiplicand. Next, multiply the 10's. Proceed to the left with the 100's. Add your partial products. As for reading, I will share a success story. My Neighbor came to me with her daughter, who wanted to be in 3rd grade but was retained in 2nd because of her 2.5 grade level. She asked if I thought I could get her up to speed over the summer. I said "yes, of course." Her daughter was so excited as she ran up the steps to my place. I worked with her on reading comprehension 4 days per week, 1 hour each day for 2 months. I assessed her skills at summer's end, and she scored 3.0. I wrote a letter to the school, and the little girl began 3rd grade in the fall. Feel free to contact me to discuss your specific needs and begin tutoring, if you so choose.
