Archaeology

Archaeology is studying anything made by human hands. It is most often used to understand ancient and lost civilizations where there are not people to show us and tell us about the way they live. When finding artifacts, (individual items left behind), excavating the area is the job of archaeologists. By uncovering the things past peoples used it only adds to our knowledge of these long dead societies. It also tells us how long ago these people lived. We can more fully understand their political structure, their religious beliefs, and their hierarchical structure. It is very important that archaeology is performed in a scientific manner to save the information we find for future generations. Under the field of archaeology there are numerous sub-categories to accommodate the many individual areas within the subject. Just to give you an idea of the scope of the field here are just a few specialized areas within archaeology: • Pottery analysis • Architecture • Egyptology • Ancient Maya Studies • Studies for each and every different region of the world • Cooking vessels • And the list goes on and on I received my Master's degree in: Anthropology/Archaeology of Ancient Maya from Prescott College in Arizona.
