Hi!

I'm Steve, and I've spent over 15 years working with students and adults in areas ranging from test preparation to application essays, personal statements, and grant proposals. Hi!

I'm Steve, and I've spent over 15 years working with students and adults in areas ranging from test preparation to application essays, personal statements, and grant proposals. I received a PhD in archaeology in London, tutored the SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT for well established firms including Kaplan and Summit, and I have worked with hundreds of high school, college, and graduate students in one-on-one and classroom environments, many of whom are now in top schools around the country and abroad.

At all levels, my approach to coaching is strategic, conceptual, and creative. Whether I am tutoring a specific subject or a standardized test, I find that effective teaching inspires students to develop their critical and creative thinking capacity, in addition to mastering fundamentals. This is true whether I'm working with a high schooler on the SAT math section, or an aspiring scholar seeking a postdoctoral placement abroad.

Coaching typically begins with an initial consultation (phone, skype or in-person) free of charge, where we discuss background, interests, and goals, and develop an outline for a targeted program. My approach is structured yet flexible since every student has a completely different style of learning, and we may discover different areas to target as we move along. For standardized test prep, I encourage each new student to take a diagnostic test to establish a baseline score, and to identify focus areas, as well as periodic practice tests as the program moves forward in order to measure progress. Specialized coaching in other areas, such as personal statements or proposal writing, will be more varied and project-specific.

If you or a family member (or friend!) is interested in tutoring/coaching/academic help, feel free to drop a line!

Excellent references available for all subjects.

I look forward to working with you!

As an academic archaeologist, I've been helping students with their writing skills for years: at the grade school, college, and graduate level. I help students understand processes behind creative and academic writing, and help them learn the rules (and how and when it's appropriate to break them!) Math has an uncanny way of instilling equal parts wonder and terror in students. It’s a system that underpins the mysteries of the universe (and, closer to home, may one day get you a job), but math education sometimes gets a bit lost in its own abstraction and can lose sight of its audience. In other words: math is wonderful, and fundamental, but you’ll need to understand it if you’re going to use it! My philosophy is to make math accessible, interesting, and usable by focusing not only on core skills but also on critical and creative thinking and real world applications. I’ll work with you to help you see the value in math and to feel more comfortable with the concepts, and not just for your upcoming test! Most of my math students are in high school and college, and I specialize in the following math topics:* Math fundamentals and core competencies Pre Algebra Algebra 1 Algebra 2 Geometry Trigonometry Precalculus AP and IB math classes Math for test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, ISEE/SSAT, and more) I’m happy to offer a initial consultation, at no cost, to discuss some tutoring options that can be effective for you!

Great Tutor and Mentor!!!

I have found Steve on Wyzant and I have to say I totally lucked out. He is so knowledgeable, patient and kind. He also went out of his way to analyze all the strengths and weaknesses of my son to prepare him (in a very short time) for the ISEE test. My son loved to work with Steve, and even with my son’s attention problem, he was totally immersed and engaged in the lessons. For me the preparation for the test is not only about the outcome, but also about learning valuable skills of discipline and perseverance. Steve’s way of explaining math problems was clear and engaging, and he helped my son perceiving the learning process as something fun and rewarding. (Bingo!) Steve helped my son in many ways, but also served as a role model and mentor. Thank You Steve, I would recommend You to anybody who needs a great tutor

Highly Recommend Steve for GRE Tutoring! Knowledgeable and Adaptable!

Steve is very thorough in explaining processes to tackle each type of question on the GRE! He has taught me several different strategies for each question type and words/phrases to be on the lookout for in the verbal section. Steve is adaptable and flexible in his tutoring methods to meet the needs of his students. Also, he is very understanding when he asks a question and I respond with "I don't know," which makes me very comfortable to admit when I am struggling. He also helped me develop a study plan that focuses on the material I will study outside of our tutoring sessions, rather than placing emphasis on the amount of time I spend studying each day.

Very knowledgeable and explains in an easy to understand manner

Steve helped me prepare for the quantitative section of the GMAT. He was extremely knowledgeable and got in touch before our meeting time to discuss content to ensure our time was used efficiently. He explained hard-to-grasp concepts in a way that made great sense and didn't mind repeating himself when he saw my facial expression say, "huh?" Will definitely be coming back to Steve for future needs. :)
