My students describe me as patient, good at explaining things, and knowledgeable.

I specialize in tutoring LSAT, SAT, ACT, and math through AP Calculus. I help my students build solid skills so they can raise their test scores significantly. I specialize in tutoring LSAT, SAT, ACT, and math through AP Calculus. I help my students build solid skills so they can raise their test scores significantly. My LSAT students work hard and usually see 10+ point increases. While I work with students at all starting points, my SAT and ACT students are often shooting for high scores. I've helped many of them get perfect or close to perfect scores (and scholarships to match). I also help with the admissions process, including personal statement review.

I tutor all components of each test and have scored highly on all of them (177 official LSAT, 1590 official SAT, 1580 on a Digital SAT practice test, 36 on ACT practice tests). I also work with students on SSAT and ISEE for private school admissions and the CogAT for admissions to gifted programs. No two students are the same, so I customize each test prep session according to my student's needs, goals, and time available.

I also provide academic tutoring and homework support for math (from middle school up to AP Calculus). I tutor very interactively, customizing for each student's particular needs. I particularly enjoy helping students discover that they actually CAN be good at the subject that is challenging them, provided they work hard and ask lots of questions.

I have over 15 years of tutoring experience, was formally trained as a tutor, and even won a National Tutor of the Year award for my work with one education company. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Washington with degrees in Linguistics and Psychology, and I have a master's degree in Second Language Studies from the University of Hawaii. My degree specializes in teaching English as a Second Language, which means I'm also comfortable with test prep for non-native English speakers.

I have over 10 years of experience teaching the GRE, which means significant experience on both the old and the new GRE. I've worked with students on Verbal, Quantitative, and the Writing assessment. My students have ranged from those who haven't done math in years to those who are shooting for a near perfect score. My own scores are a 170 Verbal and 169 Quantitative.

Grammar

Grammar

I have taught grammar to ESL students and to native English speakers who need grammar for standardized tests like the SAT/ACT, GMAT, TEAS, etc. I majored in linguistics at the University of Washington and have a Master's Degree in Second Language Studies from the University of Hawaii, specializing in Teaching ESL. I have taught ESL classes in Hawaii for two years, and have tutored for over 10 years. I am one of those rare people who enjoy talking about grammar. In tutoring, I use a variety of explanations to make sure that students understand the grammatical relationships between words, which helps students see progress more quickly.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Having tutored the SAT, ACT, and GRE, and having studied Linguistics, Latin, English, and a few other languages in college, I've acquired a sizable vocabulary. I have taught vocabulary to ESL students and to native English speakers who need a larger vocabulary for standardized tests like the GRE. I tutor vocabulary for standardized tests using roots, word groups, and sentence context. For non-native English speakers, I make sure that the vocabulary I teach is at the appropriate level and that I also teach how to use the words idiomatically. For younger children, I make sure to give age-appropriate context and to reinforce the words often.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I have been tutoring the ACT for over 10 years. Although I tutor students in all subjects of the ACT, I especially love teaching ACT English. Many students are initially frustrated because it's been so long since they were taught grammar in school, but systematic review helps a lot! I teach my students the punctuation and grammar rules the ACT tests, how to check for wordiness, and how to tackle the tricky organization questions.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I've tutored all subjects on the ACT for over 10 years. ACT Reading is about accuracy and speed. 4 passages and 40 questions is a lot to do in 35 minutes! I teach my students what they should be skimming for in the passages so that they don't waste valuable time on material that's not likely to get tested. I also cover strategies for attacking the questions and for avoiding common wrong answer traps.

I have taught all subjects of the SAT for over 15 years and am fully prepared for the upcoming change to the Digital SAT. For the reading section, I teach strategies for reading the passages themselves and for answering the questions. Finding support for the answers has been one of my emphases, even before the test changed to ask so explicitly about evidence. With the switch to the Digital SAT, I now also emphasize argument structure along with more traditional reading comp topics. My own SAT scores were 790 Math and 800 Verbal in 1999. My GRE scores (169 Quantitative and 170 Verbal, both out of 170) and LSAT score (177 out of 180) are both much more recent, and reflect that I am still quite capable when it comes to standardized tests.

Calculus,

Calculus

For many students, the transition to Calculus is a tough one. What I have found is that the more students are able to understand the WHY behind Calculus concepts, the more they are able to handle the challenges of the subject. In tutoring, I focus on helping students develop solid conceptual understanding along with problem solving skills and test-taking skills in anticipation of the AP test.

Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have 10+ years experience tutoring students in Prealgebra, and enjoy helping students see how math rules make sense. I believe in customizing my tutoring to what the student needs, which may include a math refresher to fill in some gaps that may exist. For other students, I have tutored Prealgebra as enrichment - to provide the students with a challenge beyond what they have been doing in school. I tutor patiently and kindly, using humor and plentiful examples to help students remember and make sense of the concepts. A solid Prealgebra foundation is so important for success in high school math!
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I enjoy teaching Precalculus. This can be a tough class for many students, especially if they had a hard time in Algebra II. I passed a Symbolic Logic course at the University of Washington with a perfect 4.0, and have been teaching Formal Logic for the LSAT for about 10 years. Symbolic Logic is often daunting to students because of its unfamiliarity, and I love to help students gain confidence as they learn to recognize logical patterns.

Trigonometry

I always enjoy teaching Trig and have been doing so for about ten years. For many students, learning the unit circle at first seems like it will require a lot of memorization. I love showing students how they really only need to memorize a couple of things, and the rest of the unit circle can be filled out by understanding how each component fits together. I also enjoy showing students how other tricky parts of trig (like graphing transformations of trig functions) are doable if they break the process down step-by-step.

Knowledgeable and Patient LSAT Tutor

Before working with Carrie I took an LSAT practice test and scored a 120. I was down in the dumps and knew I needed to increase my score dramatically to be accepted into law school. Even though my initial score was low I still had set high expectations for myself. I set a goal to improve my score to high 160's range. Carrie has helped me tremendously. During our first meeting she assured me that with her extensive experience tutoring students on the LSAT that if I put in the work I would be able to improve my score dramatically. I have been working with Carrie for about two months now. I scored a 158 on my last practice test and feel confident with more practice and tutoring I will be able to achieve my goal. I cannot recommend Carrie enough if you are looking for a skilled, patient, and knowledgeable tutor.

Patient, clear, and knowledgeable

Carrie has been so helpful to my son as he navigates precalculus. A lot of his struggles come from a lack of confidence (which can lead to mistakes in his work), and she has been so patient and clear. We're so grateful for her help!
