Hello!

Right off the bat, let me tell you that teaching is my passion. As an undergraduate, I studied history, anthropology, and literature, but was very unsure what I wanted to do afterward. Hello!

Right off the bat, let me tell you that teaching is my passion. As an undergraduate, I studied history, anthropology, and literature, but was very unsure what I wanted to do afterward. I completed my MA in 2013, and since then have worked as adjunct faculty for a History Department and Interdisciplinary Studies Program, as the curator of a museum, as well as a middle school teacher. For the last five years, I have worked as tenure track faculty at a community college just outside of Houston. I have a great deal of experience teaching US History to college students as well as those in the dual credit environment and have spent many years tutoring students in AP US, AP World, and AP Euro.

In my spare time, I'm an avid reader, anything from non-fiction history books (which I don't even just read for class anymore, now it's for fun!) to classic literature, to Star Wars. I am a firm believer, also, that the popular culture that teenage students enjoy(video games, movies, books, etc.) is a strong tool in helping them not only with understanding the world of today but also their subjects in school. Each student has a different way of learning, and if we as instructors can use exciting ways to get and keep them interested, then we are truly doing our jobs.

I think I have rambled enough, and of course, if you wish to know more, just let me know! I love working with students, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Literature

As a college instructor there was always a literary component to my history courses, and as an undergraduate myself I completed a Great Works Certificate, which required completing many different courses on various kinds of literature. As an adolescent teacher, I have consistently integrated literature into all aspects of my curriculum.

American History,

American History

I taught US History at the college level and for high school dual enrollment students for five years.
Anthropology,

Anthropology

My field of Anthropology is mainly cultural. My background is in folklore and mythology. The importance of this, to me, is giving students the ability to look through a lens of cultural anthropology when studying for example history, and vice versa. For cultural Anthropology, students should be learning the approaches to studying human behavior (emic vs. etic), what it means to use "thick description", etc. Most importantly, of course, understanding the value of learning about other cultures.

The respective histories of the major world religions, for example those that are Abrahamic religions: Islam, Christianity, Judaism. Also, the histories of other religions as well, past and present: -polytheistic religions of antiquity -Buddhism -Hinduism -modern Wicca and other pagan movements -African slave religion such as Obeah, Voo Doo, and Hoo Doo This is the major part of my field, and I have extensive experience researching a majority of these.
