My name is Sanjana, I am a student at the University of Florida pursuing a degree in Microbiology and Cell Science. I have worked with students from elementary school, all the way to college. I have interacted with students who just needed to brush up on some basics, and other students that needed a review of 3 years' worth of math in the span of a couple months. I have even helped students get ahead of their classes and go above and beyond what is required for the grade they are in. Without fail, every so often, a recurring question shows up.
'Why do I need to learn all of this math?' 'Why can't I learn what I need for my future occupation and move on with life?' 'I'll just look it up, I don't need to learn this!' Let me ask you a counter question. How long are you going to look things up? As an avid googler myself, I have tried to google the answer to questions that I had. The more complex the topic, the longer I fell down a rabbit hole ending up with more questions than answers. And that is without dodging websites with misinformation.
Regardless of who is asking, every time I am asked, it is clear that they are asking from a place of stress. The best solution to this problem is to learn how to learn. I work with students to see where they are struggling with, whether it be comprehension, applying knowledge, or just a lack of confidence. Using this knowledge we can plan an attack strategy for your next test and hopefully give you pathway to success and an interest in learning again.
