Hello!

If you are looking for an academic tutor or speech-language pathologist, you have come to the right place! I am a NY State licensed clinical speech-language pathologist with almost a decade of experience working as a speech teacher and general educator in New York City working with both the public and private school systems. I’m familiar with the rigorous academic programs and state examinations for students grades 1-12.

I’m skilled in tutoring various school subjects including reading, writing, English, history, science, math, as well social pragmatics as pertains to public speaking and presentation skills. Past clients have included high achieving students, students with learning disabilities or speech & language disabilities, as well as individuals with phonological disorders, dyslexia, other reading impairments, articulation disorders, and social-pragmatic disorders.

Areas targeted with younger students include: teaching subject area content (science, math, history, English), as well as reading comprehension, inferencing, verbal or written expression. With older students, I also teach subject area content as well as explicitly teach strategies to improve reading comprehension, text-coding, test-taking strategies (classroom or state-exams).

I am also exceptional at teaching effective essay writing (crafting of arguments/thesis statements, sequencing and organizing thoughts in a cohesive and coherent manner, incorporating textual evidence, etc.) with students of any age.

I cater my sessions to individual’s interests to keep clients engaged with a large emphasis on building self-esteem and confidence by celebrating victories every step of the way! I am truly excited to meet and work with you. I hope you reach out and contact me with any questions. Let's jump right in and get started!

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

As a speech-language pathologist that works in NYC city schools with students with disabilities, many of the students I encounter are ESL students. As such the techniques that I use to teach and support all of my students are very similar to those used for ESL students. In addition, I am an English as a Second Learner myself which makes it much easier for me to relate with those learning a new language. I'd be happy to help you improve your English based on your specific needs upon speaking further. Looking forward to connecting and answering any questions you may have.

Spanish

I studied Spanish all through middle and high school as well as in college. I then studied abroad for over 6 months living in Madrid where I really became proficient in conversational Spanish. Given I am not a native speaker and class-room taught with the exception of my time abroad, the ideal student would be someone requiring tutoring at a beginner or intermediate level of Spanish. I'd be happy to help tutor any students who are struggling with the basics of the language (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc.) and/or at a conversational level. Languages are a passion of mine and I hope I can bring that to our tutoring sessions!

Common Core,

Common Core

Hello! You've come to the right place looking for support with the Common Core Curriculum. As a school educator in the New York City school system for almost a decade, I worked as a "speech teacher" (licensed speech-language pathologist) closely following the common core curriculum guidelines in setting and addressing goals for students with learning disabilities. I also worked closely with general education teacher's on their core curriculum classroom assignments (building and modifying them as necessary to cater to both high achieving students as well as those who required greater support). I take a strategy based approach to teaching so that students learn content as well as important test-taking skills they will carry with them throughout the remainder of their academic careers and lives. I also customize my teaching style to student needs and work hard to get to know my students on a personal level as rapport is essential in motivation and buy-in to what a teacher/tutor is teaching. Please reach out with any questions you may have!

I take a strategy based approach to all of my tutoring that teaches skills in conjunction with subject content. As a teacher in the New York City school system, I spent a decade working with school-aged students and adults (private college student clients) on their reading comprehension skills. We worked on everything from identifying main ideas and supporting details to higher level cognitive tasks requiring students to "read between the lines" and infer what a text may be arguing. My teaching style is always customized to the students' personalities and needs regardless of age. Knowledgeable, patient, warm and FUN!

Mahnaz has been absolutely brilliant with my child. She is clearly very bright and knowledgeable in her field of speech therapy, but has also gone above & beyond to engage & enrich my daughter virtually. As I raise my children in Manhattan private school systems, I feel fortunate to have had access to some of the best child educators in the world, and I can say with confidence that Mahnaz is up there with the best of the best! Her warmth even translates across a boring computer screen (very hard to do in this new world of Zoom school). Somehow, she makes learning fun. My daughter (who hates Zoom school) cannot wait to have her next session with Mahnaz online. That speaks volumes. I cannot recommend her highly enough!
