Hello! I began as a licensed high school teacher at one of Minnesota's public school districts and I have taught social studies, mathematics and writing. Since 2012 I have tutored students and have done so on a full time basis for several years. I am experienced in working one on one with students as a special education teacher. I enjoy working with student's who struggle with academics and also with those who excel and are looking for new challenges. I tailor my tutoring styles to the particular needs each student and subject area; for example, with mathematics, I often will focus on strengthening foundation skills and mental math. I believe in helping students gain lifelong skills and knowledge in concert with specific course work and exam preparation. I love to inspire curiosity in students, to not only make them ask questions but want to find the answer on their own.

While teaching at a level 4 FED setting for Emotionally/Behaviorally Disabled High School students, I taught two specific classes regarding study and other school related skills. These students lacked any real study skills or understanding on how to properly budget time and organize materials. This was done with the intent to prepare them to entire Vocational Training or Community College programs. Areas of focus were in teaching time management, how to break large tasks into smaller pieces, how to organize materials, how to setup schedule ans timelines for projects, how to take effective notes, and how to self-advocate for assistance when needed. Following this, I taught at a Middle School in a similar setting where I worked with multiple students in assembling large scale projects for their mainstream (Regular Ed) classes. These students received help in similar areas once more, namely organization of resources, timeline planning, and checking in. I also instructed my own classes on proper note taking methods and also one proper reading techniques, reading for specific content and details.

History

American History,

American History

American History, like any form of history, is one that requires a twofold understanding. First the content of history is important to know, especially events and individuals relative location to each other. It is important to know that the Missouri Compromise happened before the Civil War, not the reverse. Beyond the surface level of content knowledge though, there is a more fluid knowledge that needs to be developed, one in which the student learns "why" things are connected. Often students only ever learn the first of these two and because of that they struggle to remember facts. Understanding the "why", though, is what allows students to succeed in even the most challenging of courses. As a Social Studies teacher and History Major, I teach not just the "what" but the "why" of events and history.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra I involves the basic understanding of algebra including solving for one unknown variable either with multiplication/division or addition/subtraction. It also includes graphing of equations, and understanding mean, median, and mode. When teaching Algebra I, I stress mental mathematics but also recommend a graphing calculator and graph paper. I use straight math practice problems for basic understanding of each concept, but will quickly progress each student to mostly solving word problems as these are the true application of math and the best retention method. Student's prepared with word problems in Algebra I will have great success in Algebra II and Pre-Calculus.

Taught in Federal Level 3/4 Settings for 1 year. This is a setting that deals with kids who have some of the most severe disabilities. They are in a separate facility and rarely interact with their non-Special Education peers. I taught for one year in this setting. All of my students had multiple moderate to severe disabilities in areas such as Oppositional Defiance, Conduct Disorder, Low IQ (<70), Specific Learning Disabilities, ADHD, severe anxiety, depression, Dyslexia, and other disabilities which held them back from being included in the mainstream school. During this time I had completed all the course work for the certification, except for my practicum, I had passed my certification exam with the state of MN, and personally managed the case loads of over 20 different students. I also received a variance from the state to teach this until I received my license in the area.

100% Success!

Our son struggled with AP US History as a sophomore in HS last year. Samuel's positive and outgoing personality, tremendous knowledge of AP content delivery, and organized approach to learning key concepts created the perfect support environment for our son. Samuel's patience and flexibility in scheduling was also critical during a very busy time of year. In the end, our son passed the AP exam with flying colors! Samuel is worth his weight in gold.
