I've been teaching for over 30 years. My background includes students of all ages and abilities. My goal is to build success by starting where the student is and taking them step-by-step until they can reach their potential. I've taught reading and writing, primarily, but I can determine students' needs and adapt lessons for whatever will work best for the student's learning style. I love working with anyone who has struggled; success that comes with individualized attention, compassion and understanding is rewarding for me, the student and their family. I've taught reading to illiterate adults who gained an average of 5 grades for each year we worked. My elementary, middle and high school students always tested well above grade level when we finished. Nearly all my tutoring has been private-pay and parents were so happy with the results that they would bring a younger sibling if they encountered challenges. My graduate background was Special Education, so I've worked with individuals who have reading disabilities, ADHD and other diagnoses, but my greatest joy comes simply from imparting useful information that helps any individual.

One neighbor, a college student, asked for help with a paper the summer before his senior year, and he was clueless when it came to writing. We worked to get his paper properly and clearly written, and he got an A, the first he had ever gotten in his life! Throughout his senior year, each paper was better than the last, because he learned what was needed in a well-crafted, cogent argument. He got straight A's, actually graduating Cum Laude, squeaking into the honors status by .03!

My latest student was a 13-year-old, home-schooled kid who had language skills at 2nd to 3rd grade. His parents had a neuropsychological report that showed significant deficits. We started working and after 2 years he entered 8th grade at a private, college prep school with reading scores at 10th grade. We continued working to make his transition smooth, and he made honor roll every term.
