Hello, students! My name is Jessica, and it's a pleasure to meet you. Hello, students! My name is Jessica, and it's a pleasure to meet you. If you are looking for help with English, Spanish, or Latin, I have both formal qualifications and a natural love of working with language that I want to share with others. This is my tutoring philosophy - to love my subject and help others to love it, too. If you're ready to fall in love with language, please keep reading!
Let's start with my formal qualifications. I am a native English speaker with a bachelor's degree in psychology from a 4-year university and a Language Primer Certificate from Poynter ACES. I have also studied other languages. I began by taking Spanish through the AP level, and scored a 5 on the AP exam in my senior year of high school. This introduced me to concepts such as verb conjugation, direct vs. indirect objects, and active vs. passive voice. I then studied Biblical Hebrew in college, which taught me a whole new alphabet, more about verb conjugation (binyanim), and a lot about the history and culture of the Semitic peoples. Finally, I started studying Latin in 2015, which has taken me deep into conjugation, translation, noun/adjective declension, tense, mood, gender, and aspect. But what would I do with all this knowledge? Share it with others, of course!
I have been tutoring Spanish and Latin since 2019, both in person and online. I like my students to hear the language and speak it as much as possible, as opposed to doing drills on worksheets (though there's nothing wrong with a little of that, too!). My preferred text for Latin is "Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata", by Hans Orberg, but I will work with whatever my students have. I also have some experience with reading and writing help, having worked both with local families and with a tutoring center.
If my skills and passion for languages could help you, let’s work together to deepen your love for and understanding of Latin or Spanish, or craft a polished, concise, engaging writing assignment! Thank you for reading.
