Russell developed an interest in music at an early age, playing both trombone and piano. He holds a B.M. in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and a music education degree from Lehman College (C.U.N.Y.) His teachers have included Erica Frost Pell, James Behr, Miyoko Lotto, Constance Keene, and Connie Crothers. Other influences include Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Billy Joel, and Billie Holiday. He holds New York State teaching certification, is a Steinway Educational Partner, and a Little Kids Rock Teacher. He has also co-produced the workshop productions of James Behr's musicals The Count of Monte Cristo and E-Date The Musical.
