I believe strongly that mathematics is a skill that anybody can learn, and that it is just the way mathematics is taught in traditional settings that may not suit everyone perfectly. As such, I try to bring flexibility, empathy, and patience to my approach to tutoring. I also try to build in mathematical intuition and connections to more abstract ideas whenever possible, as I believe this helps students retain concepts and feel more comfortable with the techniques and tools they are expected to know.

I have tutored for the courses STAT 430 and STAT 512 at the University of Pennsylvania, covering the standard advanced undergraduate probability curriculum (normal, binomial, chi-squared, exponential, Poisson, Beta distributions, etc.; conditional probability, joint probability, variance, expectation, moments) as well as statistics curriculum (minimal variance unbiased estimators, Cramer-Rao, Rao-Blackwell, likelihood estimation, hypothesis testing).

GREAT tutor - glad I chose Elaine!!

I am so grateful for Elaine's help!! She responded to my inquiry quickly and was flexible. She was able to explain everything I needed help with in a manner that was easy to understand, and she is very friendly. Before the session I was so lost. After the session I was ready to take the exam. You need to have Elaine as your tutor if you need math help in the areas she covers (which are many)!! THANK YOU, Elaine.

Elaine continues to impress!

Elaine does a great job at tailoring her approach to the needs of the student. I enjoy discussing the significance and real-world applications of formulas, as opposed to simple memorization or "plug & chug" approaches. Elaine and I spend more time talking about formulas or mathematical concepts, as opposed to simply solving problems. She not only possesses a great understanding of everything, but she's good at communicating in a clear/concise way and its also obvious she genuinely enjoys math/numbers. Working with Elaine has really helped me understand more of the "why" so I can be even better at the "how" when it comes to solving problems. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her services!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Elaine was excellent!! Very knowledgeable, patient, with great teaching methods!! I was taught how to do math in simple steps, which helped me to understand all of which I didn't know. The session was surprising enjoyable! I never thought I would enjoy doing Math! Thank you WyzAnt for providing such great tutors!!!

Helpful tutor

Our session ran three hours working on problems. Elaine gave me a good foundation to build on to finish the rest afterwards.

Knowledgeable, efficient, and great teacher

Elaine met for me over two consecutive days. I had a pretty specific assignment, and Elaine sensed what I wanted to accomplish quickly. She took the time to look over material before we met, found a great, convenient meeting location, and we were able to dive right in. She took time to bring together the material and the overall concepts while making progress through my worksheet. She knew where we had to stop and look at concepts, and when to push through a problem. She also helped with tips for just writing my equations so I don't confuse myself. I've worked with a number of tutors in the past year, and the tutor can make all the difference. I would go back to her anytime.
