Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I have a preeminent vocabulary, developed over growing up with the Oxford English Dictionary (the most complete dictionary in the English language), from having read great authors voraciously, and from having successfully earned 12 years of university credit, including a year spent at a top linguistics school in France.

History

European History,

European History

I have successfully studied at three schools in Europe Oxford University, the London School of Economics, and the Université de Franche-Comté. I have successfully completed several classes in history within my International Relations major and have tutored students in French and European history.
Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

Having earned a perfect 5 on my AP US Government test in high school, I have since studied many aspects of Government and Politics at Oxford, at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and within my International Relations major at the College of William and Mary. Professionally, I have worked on a US presidential campaign get out the vote operation in the most fiercely contested battle-ground state and have interned legislatively with five members of Parliament in the "Mother of Parliaments" at the British Palace of Westminster.
Philosophy,

Philosophy

In addition to majoring in Economics and International Relations, I have completed the equivalent of a major in philosophy, including Introductory Philosophy, Logic, Honors Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, Contemporary Analytic Philosophy, Non-Western Humanities, and have completed a self-designed honors independent study in Theoretical Cosmology studying under a PhD in Philosophy of Science. At Oxford, I completed courses (or called there "read papers") in Jurisprudence (i.e. Philosophy of Law), Social Theory (i.e. Philosophy of Politics), and Philosophy of Mind (i.e. Philosophy of Psychology). With this background, I can help you avoid the informal fallacies, perfect the techniques of Aristotilian and Boolean logic, enhance your Millian and Benthamite utility and Kantian deontology, evaluate the logic of St. Anselm's arguments, make wise Pascalian wagers about the existence of God, find the virtuous Nichomachean mean between two vices, and understand like Nagel "What is it like to be a bat". The primary challenge to philosophy is ensuring that all your arguments are indisputably logical according to the mathematical laws of logic so that while meaningfully testable no professor can falsify your statements in the Popperian sense. Then, in an ideal world of forms, you have to express your ideas eloquently. As the tutor Aristotle did for Alexander the Great, I can help you achieve logical rigor and verbal eloquence assisting you on your path to becoming a Platonic philosopher-king.
Political Science,

Political Science

My background in political science includes getting a perfect score on my AP Government AP test, a major in International Relations that included many political science classes (e.g. Comparative Government, International Relations, International Political Economy, International Law), studying with top political scientists at Oxford University and at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In additon, I have worked as a field organizer in a battle-ground state (Iowa), have worked in the U.S. federal government at the Federal Reserve, and have interned in the British Parliament.
Religion,

I have completed coursework in Comparative Religions, have read religious texts, and/or have visited religious places of worship within the various denominations and sects of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Sikhism, Greek and Roman Mythology (and proto-Greek Indo-European beliefs), Egyptian Mythology, Native American beliefs, Jainism, and Shintoism. I have also studied religion within the context of World History classes, honors World Literature classes, Non-Western Humanities (including the significance of religious artwork), World Philosophy classes (e.g. St. Anselm, Augustine), Chinese and Japanese Politics (e.g. Shinto, Daoism, Confucianism, and US History (e.g. Jonathan Edwards, Great Awakenings, Puritanism, Transcendentalism, Mormonism, Deism). I am somewhat familiar with Christian apologetics (e.g. C.S. Lewis, Lee Strobel) and critical traditions (e.g. Bertrand Russell and Richard Dawkins). Of possible interest, I once saw Pope John Paul II during a Latin mass in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, have toured the cathedrals of Europe and of England, attended the same Oxford college as William Tyndale (who wrote the precursor to the King James Bible), and have inquired about the beliefs of and have joined debates between devotees of different religious traditions found most vociferously at Speakers' Corner, Hyde Park, London. I have friends of many religious traditions who have informed my understanding of their beliefs. Religious beliefs are at the heart of the values and cultures of many of the world's 6.8 billion people, and without value or judgment I can help you make sense of many of the religious traditions of the world.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

My linear algebra background includes many subjects and applications. In our data-driven age, applications of linear algebra are ubiquitous. Linear algebra applies math to such matrices as any Excel spreadsheet, and using the power of matrices, you can calculate millions of values or solve billions of equations simultaneously. I have used linear algebra in such advanced math classes as Multivariate Calculus 3, Differential Equations, and graduate-level Time-Series Analysis and Cross-Section Analysis. Multivariate Calculus 3 uses the basic operations of Linear Algebra, including dot products and cross products, to calculate speeds, positions, and forces in infinite-dimensional space. Differential Equations uses linear algebra to solve high-order systems of differential equations to calculate eigenvalues and eigenvectors using Cramer's rule. Building on Linear Algebra as a prerequisite, Time-Series Analysis begins its first week covering not matrix algebra but matrix calculus, using linear algebra to calculate a plethora of statistics, just as Cross-Section Analysis uses the linear algebra techniques of factor rotation in principal components analysis to reduce the dimensionality of correlated variables. In addition to using linear algebra in this more advanced coursework, I have also used the techniques of linear algebra professionally in calculating portfolio analysis, risk statistics in MatLab, and teaching PCA and (from machine learning) support vector machines to PhDs and engineers. If you would like help with Linear Algebra, I would be delighted to be of service.

A native English speaker, I have studied English thoroughly including reading grammar guides (e.g. Fowler's, Strunk and White, and over a dozen quotations books) for fun, have professionally written a private verbal SAT practice tests, have always been a voracious reader, and even studied linguistics for a year at a top language school in France receiving a foreign language certification. In addition to my English skills, proficiency in a second language makes me all the more aware of the way language is constructed. Because of this background, my most well-published professor at Oxford wrote that I wrote better than almost any of his American students and awarded me Oxford's highest mark. This background has enabled me to earn in the top percents on standardized tests (e.g. GRE, GMAT, SAT, ACT), and I would be delighted to help you with English too.

Encouraging and positive

Lewis took on a very challenging job with my son, who is not interested in Calculus at all! He finds ways to explain real life applications of Calculus, and he shares lots of tricks for remembering or deriving formulas. Despite having an unmotivated and somewhat resistant student, Lewis has maintained a positive outlook. He's done everything possible to show progress and build confidence. We've added more sessions because I think Lewis is making a big difference. He looks for ways to connect with my son and talk about things that interest him.

Great Tutor

I am currently challenged with a hard corporate finance MBA course. I had a recent assignment that I was struggling on. Lewis was great, patient and made me feel more confident. Talking the assignment through gave me the confidence to see it through after our session. Cheers!

Patient and Helpful

Lewis is very patient and works very hard with each specific student to really ensure that they receive a proper lesson. Lewis seems to really care that each student succeeds and learns and does not only try to accomplish the bare minimum, he goes above and beyond what is expected of him.

Hard work and perseverance.

Lewis tutored our daughter in AP Calculus for 8 months. She started out failing and ended with an 89 on final exam. She then took the AP exam and got a "4". The tutoring and hard work speak for themselves.

Excellent tutor

Lewis relates very well with my freshman son during Algebra I lessons. Since Lewis began helping my son, his Algebra class grades on his tests have been going up by 5% over the previous test. My son also has an interest in the financial markets and Lewis is able to relate to him some more advanced theories in financial terms so that my son actually grasps the meaning (Sigma's, confidence intervals).

Awesome and easy to follow

Lewis started with a very simple and easy to follow approach to Macroeconomics. He's very good at explaining concepts and using visuals to assist in his explanation. It's obvious he's very well educated in economics and will be great at going to as deep of a level as needed which isn't going to likely scratch the surface of his knowledge. He's patient and personable which really helps us older learners (over 40) feel less intimidated by the subject matter. I'll definitely be employing him to help me pass this class. Great Job!
