Recently retired, I have over 30 years of teaching experience. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Arts degree in Special Eduction from the University of Northern Colorado. My experience has primarily been with learning disabled students although I did teach third grade at the beginning of my career. I had the opportunity to work in Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia, known for its excellence in education. I spent nine years in Virginia working with 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Upon returning to my home state of Wyoming, I continued my special education career working with all levels K-6.
Students who struggle with any aspect of learning often lack the confidence and motivation to improve. My teaching style involves establishing trust and a level of comfort with each child. I focus on student strengths and building on those strengths for better skill application. I use a systematic approach to both reading and writing to build the necessary foundational skills. The sequence I utilize begins with the easiest and most basic concepts and elements which progresses methodically to more difficult concepts and elements. I have successfully used this approach in the classroom as well as my experience tutoring.
