Hello! I am an energetic, engaging teacher who likes to have fun with my students! I strive to create unique and challenging learning experiences that relate to a student's interests and goals. Literacy and language are crucial components of a student's education and their value cannot be underestimated. I have three Master's degrees in Teaching, with certifications in K-12 ESOL & gifted, 6-8 grade History, and 6-12 grade English/Language Arts. Prior to deciding to start teaching, I earned a Bachelor's degree in Writing Arts and worked as a copy editor.

I completed my student teaching placement in a private school in NJ, where I taught 7th through 9th grade Language Arts, including a 9th grade Honors section. Over the past 10 years, I have been a K-4 reading specialist at a Philadelphia charter school, taught 6th-9th grade Language Arts at several different public middle schools in NJ and PA, and most recently serve as the ESOL department chair and lead ESOL teacher for a local public middle school. I have extensive experience with exceptional students, having worked with not only multilingual learners, but gifted and special education learners as well.

I look forward to the opportunity to assist you and your child in achieving his or her learning goals!

Public Speaking

In high school, I was a member of NICHE Mock Trial Team. This activity includes drama, public speaking and debate skills. Students develop a court case and then act it out in competitions with other teams. For instance, NICHE's student attorneys would have to cross examine the opposing team's witnesses just like a lawyer would during a real court case. I was a student lawyer all 3 years that I was on the team. Now, I coach this same high school mock trial team. My team is ranked in the Top 4 in the state (NJ has over 200 participating schools). The judges of this competition, who are practicing attorneys and judges, rave about my students' outstanding abilities in drama, public speaking and debate skills. I believe that these experiences certainly qualify me to teach and tutor in the area of public speaking. As an educator, I make numerous presentations a year and can certainly teach this skill to students.

Under my leadership as department chair, my school's ESOL program has been the highest-performing middle school ESOL program in our county for the past four years. I use a cross-curricular literacy approach to ESOL instruction that helps students to learn content from social studies & science and language skills simultaneously.

Proofreading

I worked for the country's largest newswire, Business Wire, as an editor before becoming a teacher. I helped our member companies write and edit their press releases before releasing them to the public. It was a high-pressure job where proofreading mistakes could cost the company a client and cost the client millions of dollars. As a result, I became an incredibly thorough and proficient proofreader during my time with the company.

I took a wide variety of literature classes during college and graduate school, including World, British and American Literature. I have experience teaching 7th to 9th grade literature as well. Excellent encouraging and motivating student to learn!!!

Very patient with student. Excellent advanced language arts teacher. Also incorporates study techniques while tutoring that will benefit our daughter throughout her high school and college years!!

Shannon, 12 lessons with Meghan

Meghan will no tutor any longer in PA - got full time job and moved away

The first lesson my son had with Meghan was very engaging and promising, in a "discovery" format. She left saying that for the next lesson she will bring learning materials, tailored to his needs, and they will actually begin working on improving his essay writing skills. Few days later (after I confirmed the payment for the class) she sent an email offering only one time option in the next week, which we had to decline as there were other plans for that particular hour. Meghan could not reschedule for another time. The following week when I reached out asking for her time availability, she replied that she will not be available in the next two weeks, after which she will move away from Pennsylvania to start a new job, and that she wishes my son a good luck finding another tutor...

Galina, 1 lesson with Meghan
Tutor responded:

Galina, I was very up front when we scheduled our first session about the likelihood that I would be unable to continue as your son's tutor; as I stated in that email on January 18, "I do want to be up front with you and let you know, however, that I just received a job offer in Maryland. If the contract comes through, I will likely be moving there mid-February. If you would prefer to connect with a tutor who will be in the area long-term, I totally understand that. If you'd like to begin sessions anyway, I am happy to meet with [your son] on Monday." Since you replied and scheduled a session, I assumed you understood that I likely would not be able to meet more than once or twice. I hope you were able to find another tutor. Best of luck!
