Architecture

I have previously worked on internships in at least 2 Architecture Firms in Los Angeles (TFA AJLA and others) on local and international projects that included model building for an extensive urban development mixed used international project and an Eye glass store in Calabassas. In addition to hand-drafting, software-drawings and model building for restaurant projects in palm springs. I recently assisted a UCLA Architecture student with her studio work that involved case studies for a Japanese garden inspired library in Huntington Park; with graduate students, including UCLA graduate students and Architecture/Design professionals in the field, I help them see the aspirations of humanity through the lens of architecture; quantifying spatial perceptions using drawings, physical models, sketches and software tools; relating the structure of nature to the structure of buildings; making material choices to control varying climate patterns; approaching design iterations with logical pragmatism; solving client/site problems through collaboration; seeing construction as an art while taking advantage of scientific experimentation with building materials; discussing Architecture in the context of Artificial Intelligence;using historical precedence to en-lighten students and design professionals on future possibilities in architecture; and above all inspiring a passion for unmatched creativity and problem solving that gives meaning to life through architecture. I have worked closely with UCLA Graduate students helping them meet their software and studio design needs.

Business

Business,

Business

I have worked with MBA students in their business coursework including UCLA Anderson and USC Marshall students looking at business planning, processes and strategy. We completed course projects identifying their individual passions and transforming these to proposals for potential startups. In GSBA-504a: Business Operations Management we explained productive systems that lead to efficient outputs of goods and services; In GSBA 540: Contemporary Issues in Competitive strategies we discussed the choices business managers make in optimizing profits against the backdrop of competitors; using data and critical analysis to understand how businesses can stay ahead in competitive markets. I have also assisted USC Marshall Business students and SMC students with their intro to business courses helping them grasp the benefits of writing business plans, marketing plans and accounting/economic strategies that firms need to implement prior to launch. Also with business startups/consultants we have developed strategies to help businesses manage change through new/alternative processes that incorporate data and technology.
Econometrics,

Econometrics

In Micro and Macro-economics I have worked with undergraduate and graduate students including UCLA students in making them understand relationships between households, businesses and governments. In order to solidify these connections, we have employed mathematical and statistical tools such as graphs giving students broad discretion in Econometrics to interpret economic trends that can benefit households, businesses and governments.
Financial Accounting,

Financial Accounting

Accounting has traditionally been understood as record keeping for purposes of controlling businesses in terms of incomes and expenditures. In working with USC and SMC students in their accounting courses including introduction to Financial Accounting and Intermediate Accounting I have worked to emphasize the non-obvious aspects of accounting that touch beyond profit making; These other aspects have bordered on accounting as a tool for processing information towards critical decision making within organizations.
GRE,

GRE

The GRE Math Section has presented the greatest challenge to graduate students allowing me to develop a structured practice schedule that involves revisiting the basics of college algebra and elements of calculus to rebuild confidence in problem solving. Also we have worked with some UCLA graduate students creating a vocabulary log that mirrors the typical GRE verbal section requirements. In the verbal sections also We have worked on comprehension strategies that center on analytical reading that leads to comprehension of passages.
Macroeconomics,

Macroeconomics

Central to economics is the theory of demand and supply particularly for micro-economics which involves units of business and households with regard to the distribution of land, labor capital and entrepreneurship. Macro-economics deals with whole economies including global systems. I have worked with UCLA students on ECONOMICS 1 and ECONOMICS 2. In addition I have assisted USC students with their micro-economics and macro-economics including ECON 351 Economics for Business; with some MBA students at UC-BERKELEY I have covered projects and discussions revolving around MBA 201 Economics for Business decision making.

AutoCAD

I have strong backgrounds in Architecture and architectural design and have completed coursework on Autocad at LAIAD and Cal Poly Pomona that included extensive training in use and application of Autocad to create technical drawings and complete studio projects. We created Autocad based construction documents meeting industry standards.
MATLAB,

MATLAB

The initial contact that Engineering/Computer science/Math students have with MATLAB is the Graphical User Interface. Prior to diving into programming for theoretical applications, I engage the students on the menu items and toolbars showing them how easy it is to test simple math and physics problems such as projectiles by using what they come to refer as "GUI". At the advanced level they start creating programs that analyse for instance bending moments; typical of construction projects;allowing them to check the viability of structures based on simulation of potential loads. We have worked with LMU, USC and UCLA Engineering students getting them up to speed on the Math and Physics programming. With Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for instance, we completed multiple weekly projects on MATLAB;ranging from simple graphs with the plot function, to helping them get accustomed to arrays and the for-while loop programs. We experimented with the Fibonacci sequence and gave them a head start in setting up user defined functions with their own inputs. They overcame critical challenges in defining shear and bending moment functions together with producing plots that mimic real life. For some students their performance improved at least 3 letter grades, coming into MATLAB with no prior programming experience. Beyond academics MATLAB is a go to software for Engineering professionals looking to test potential projects from research, design and development before launch; such as in applying math matrices on image processing.

Revit,

Revit

Final Design products in building construction are rarely individual efforts.I have worked closely with students(including Ucla and USC) and Design professionals on their Revit software skills watching them get excited as they pick up from the basics of getting comfortable with families to mastering advanced collaboration tools. With USC graduate students we targeted projects on Architecture 505a coursework both studio and 2D/3D visualization portions. First we introduced basic conceptualization using the line tool together with massing techniques on imported real sites. Then we used the modify tool taking advantage of data management capabilities of Revit to input site specific conditions such as typical solar experiences/background shadows;Once the ideas were crystallized as actual 3D images we picked up on the analytical and documentation strengths of Revit. They were able to add details to their digital models using the ribbon menu items. It is here that they work to meet the numerical/computation requirements of their projects targeting industry standards and project constraints. I have helped Design and construction professionals take documentation at the production level where introduction of architectural elements (walls, floors, windows, columns, beams, etc) measured against code requirements makes it easier for Architects to have a seamless collaboration with Engineers, Interior Designers, Interior Architects, Landscape Architects, Real Estate professionals, Urban Planners and Construction Managers as a team. The presentation of elevations, sections, 3D views, Renderings and schedules is now a group effort with the least complexity. We have also gone beyond design and construction requirements deploying analysis tools that target environmental systems such as HVAC,LIGHTING and PV PANELS. We can work together on your Revit to effect conceptual ideas and to implement changes to initial designs after analysis feedback.
SAS,

SAS

The interplay between data and the SAS interface reveals the power of the PROC command in guiding visual and numerical outputs. I have assisted business and health-care professionals with minimal programming background gain traction and solve real life problems emerging with breakthroughs that have the potential of revolutionizing modern medicine. For instance, I assisted a Prof. of Medicine out of University of University of South Florida working on advancing his Public health credentials. On his Epidemiology Methods II coursework, SAS became the go to software for studying Effect Modification and Confounding. We analysed relationships between bone density, longevity and smoking using senior citizen data on SAS. He navigated the steep learning curve on SAS, gaining speed and efficiency in using commands such as PROC ANOVA, PROC CHART, PROC CORR, PROC GLM and others; without SAS it would have been difficult to detect the relationship between bone density and smoking. We have worked with Masters in Public health students complete their bio-stats coursework (including BS 805 which is Intermediate Statistical Computing and Applied Regression Analysis out of Boston University) taking advantage of the simple commands on SAS to plot disease incidence by demographics or relationships between incomes and cancer treatments. SAS is emerging as a versatile software for businesses craving on making actionable decisions based on data but without the time/schedule to master programming at the advanced level. Its intuitive tools are perfect for beginning learners while its code requirements are ideal for advanced learners with the potential of navigating into new grounds of artificial intelligence as some Math/Computer Science students soon discover.
Sketchup,

Sketchup

Multiple 3D-software in Design/Engineering/Architecture are in use, but Sketch-up stands out as the easiest to work with in transforming conceptual ideas to applied layouts. I have assisted Architecture/Design/Construction/Engineering undergraduate and graduate students(including USC,Woodbury,Ucla) together with Interior Architecture/Interior design students gain a foothold in the intuitive nature of Sketch-up; starting with simple plans, sections and elevations based on line/geometric tools and moving onto 3D options especially with the push/pull menu tool. Some students and professionals have asked for more seeking to gain mastery of sketch-up by taking a programmable and editable approach where they use specific data to adjust the existing tools to their targeted project needs. It is at this point that the scale tool emerges as a strength in eventual production of construction documents. As a step towards presentable out-puts they have gained comfort in the move tools aided by different views. For those wanting to take Sketch-up to the advanced level importing and exporting external files such as CAD files and interfacing with other software such as Photoshop is a requirement. Sketch-up not only allows users to connect with the real world through Geo locate models but also is fundamental to success in Design education and professional practice. For 3D enthusiasts and those enamored with gaming/animation Sketch-up can be an initial stepping stone to their dreams and goals.

Differential Equations goes beyond regular differential and Integral Calculus. We have still exploited the strength of Calculus with some LMU and CSUN Engineering students particularly Mechanical Engineering students to explore and explain differential equations. This has allowed us to confirm the relationships between a function and its derivatives proving that mechanical objects such as mechanical plumbing in construction projects can be modeled using differential equations.
Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I have supported Math, Engineering and Computer science students at the graduate, undergraduate and professional level helping them develop rigorous approaches to logic based proofs for discrete math. We were able to set the stage for strong foundations in functions, number theory and algorithms as a window to programming at the advanced level. With USC Math 400:Foundations of Discrete Mathematics; for instance we defined Cardinality as the number of elements in a set confirming countability of sets based on one to one relationships with positive integers. We tested countable sets such as rational sets and sets of positive integers. Weaving through the SCHRÖDER-BERNSTEIN THEOREM as a way of finding correspondence and equality of sets. Through structured learning I have also created study templates for computer science majors to navigate through their discrete math/structures requirements explaining to them the concepts of bijection, injection and surjection. For Engineering students we have progressed beyond relations, graphs, boolean algebra, sets and functions giving them a head start in applying these theories to their programming courses beyond discrete math.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

In Understanding Linear Algebra I have worked extensively with USC, UCI , UCLA and LMU Engineering, Computer Science and Math students develop simple and rigorous methods of formal proofs as applied in matrix and vector space transformations. In Math 245 Linear Algebra, for instance, LMU Engineering students have confirmed the connection between real life problems in Engineering and Business and how these can be described and analyzed through formulation of vectors and Matrices; I have seen students light up as we make transitions from using typical Gauss-Jordan Elimination in finding solutions to viewing multi-dimensional matrices as linear transformations. At the advanced level we have engaged Eigen vectors and Eigen values qualitatively seeing how these explain the future behavior of dynamical systems. It is here that students have started to see the subtle connections between differential equations and linear algebra with linear algebra emerging as a window through which we can view both real and abstract transformations in space.

Also, I have assisted students with OAT for optometry school entrance tests, DAT for Dental School and MCAT for medical school.
Geometry,

Geometry

In Spring (2011), I had a Beverly Hills High student perform a near impossible feat: succeeding in Geometry beyond expectation. He had 3-4 weeks left to his finals in Geometry and his previous scores were lower than passing scores, with at least 3 quizzes left and 2 tests before the final. He developed a review plan where he studied small pieces of information (including the difficult ones) over short periods (30-45min) spaced out during the day and week. The outcome was desirable he moved 4 letter grades up in 4 weeks and managed the previous elusive A! score in his second to last test. This is not beyond anyone yearning to succeed.I have also assisted Pali High, Culver City High and Milken Community High students succeed in geometry in preparation for algebra.

I have assisted graduate students in physics mechanics, electromagnetics and optics for GRE and consistently worked with UCLA students in physics 6A,6B,6C applying elements of calculus to solve equations of motion, energy, electricity and waves. In addition I have worked with Dental School bound Biology and Chemistry majors complete Calculus based physics 37,38 and 39.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

The introduction of Pre-Calculus was preceded by complaints from students that their transition into Calculus especially after completing trigonometry was not smooth.I have worked with SMC, CSUN, LMU and several High school students to capture the purpose of pre-calculus and develop strong strategies for problem solving that emphasize algebraic and graphical interpretations of solutions to equations. Also we have employed analytical steps that create structured templates which when students follow simplify their problem solving requirements in pre-calculus.

Test Preparation

GRE,

ISEE,

ISEE

I have assisted high school students both one on one and live online prepare for their ISEE. Some of the students have gained entrance into Marlborough school, Marymount school and others; Most importantly I have prepared them with emphasis in the Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement sections. In the quantitative reasoning we have strengthened the concepts of probability and statistics, algebra and geometry. Through a heavy dose of word problems we have established foundations for success enabling students transform these strategies into other sections of the test including verbal reasoning. The ISEE is a first step to independent learning and a rich college experience.
MCAT,

MCAT

We have worked with graduate students including UCI (University of California Irvine). Biology graduate majors (2013/2014) excel in their MCAT for medical school, with a focus on physics content and verbal reasoning content. On physics we covered mechanics such as work/energy and electricity and magnetism such as electrostatics. We practiced actual problems using diagrams to improve efficiency in solving particularly force diagrams.
