About Jennifer

Bio

I've been a teacher for 29 years & a private tutor for 30 plus years. My students have told me that I make learning fun & that I've made them learn to love writing, reading & poetry. I believe this is so because I truly love teaching & I want my students to succeed.

I find that private tutoring is the best way to really get to know a student's strengths & weaknesses. The student doesn't feel the pressure to be "right" because he or she is not surrounded by peers. I am able to give this...

During my 20 years of teaching English, I have also taught grammar. Grammar was part of the curriculum and was implemented in various ways. Some examples included using some of the grammatical errors from my students' writing and creating mini grammar lessons to focus on specific areas of necessity; as part of 4th grade (which I taught for four years) test prep, we had specific blocks of time to teach grammar skills, as well as writing skills, listening skills and all other areas of English.

As the ELA teacher, it was always necessary to proofread my students' work. I also created peer workshop and taught my students to proofread their own work as well as their peers' work. Being the coordinator of the Aquinas program for gifted students, I had to constantly proofread their thesis papers before final submission to the board.

I was on the board at my school for Common Core. I was in charge of ELA. I had to attend a course during one summer at a private university to be certified. I also had to attend one Saturday class every month at the same university that school year. With the information I attained, I was in charge of sharing and presenting this information with my colleagues during our monthly faculty meetings. I also had to make packets of the grade relevant information and distribute them to the corresponding teachers. Finally, I had to be available to my colleagues to guide them when necessary and to answer questions they may have had dealing with common core.

I have tutored many students for the Regents exams. Most recently I helped prepare students for English and for Global Studies which the students did very well. One student told me she felt so confident and prepared when going to take her Global Studies Regents that she had no feelings of nervousness before her exam or during it.
