Having worked in education through my entire career, first in university enrollment management and then as a high school social studies teacher, I have worked with thousands of students, supporting them in mastering history, government and psychology concepts, as well as helping them polish their research and writing skills.

I have taught US Government, economics, American history, sociology, psychology, and several other courses, and am passionate about understanding how the past has shaped the present, and helping students recognize their critical role in protecting and preserving democracy.

In addition to teaching course curricula, I work with students on writing skills, standardized test preparation, college essays, and graduate literature reviews and research papers. Through the completion of a master's degree in learning and instruction, I have learned that teaching is best when it helps students develop the ability to regulate their own learning and implement meta-cognitive strategies that will serve them in college and beyond.

My interest in working with students in test prep stems from watching, as a proctor, my classroom students take the exams without any preparation and using no strategies that could have helped them achieve scores that accurately reflect their abilities. I developed an SAT and ACT test preparation at my school, and saw tremendous improvement in the results of the students who attended my after-school class. I have spent a great deal of time researching strategies and techniques, but my knowledge of cognitive psychology has been the best guide to helping students achieve scores that allow them access to the colleges and universities they want to attend.

As a teacher, I have assisted my own high school students in crafting strong admission and scholarship essays and building their knowledge of grammar and sentence structure rules for the SAT and ACT examinations. Having successfully written literature reviews and research proposals, I also assist college and graduate students in how to identify relevant literature and structure their writing to successfully meet course requirements.

Test Preparation

COOP/HSPT,

COOP/HSPT

I have been working with students as they prepare for the HSPT exam for more than seven years, and have a strong track record of bringing scores up to meet private school requirements. I can help students with reading comprehension, as well as with analogy, verbal logic, synonym, antonym, categorization, and grammar items in the language section of the exam. I was a certified teacher for nearly twenty years prior to retirement, and have a 5-star rating on Wyzant.
ISEE,

ISEE

I am a certified teacher with more than five years of experience helping students improve their ISEE, SSAT and HSPT scores. I teach students how to read passages more deeply, and use methodical approaches to determining answers. My students also learn how to build their vocabulary, and master analogy and sentence completion questions. I do not simply give my students practice questions, but provide deeper instruction that serves them well on the exam, and in the classroom once they have achieved their school admission goal.

SSAT

BA, Psychology MA, Learning and Instruction 18 Years of experience in publication writing and editing for public and private universities. 17 Years of experience in secondary school teaching, Social Studies 6-12 certified, rated as outstanding for the last fifteen years. I have tutored students taking the SSAT, ISEE and HSPT for five years, so am very familiar with the types of questions on the test, time restrictions, and the strategies that students can use to increase their scores. I teach students how to build bridge sentences for analogies, how to use Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of unknown words, and how to insert their own words into sentence completion questions and then match their words with the answer choices. I also was a test item writer for several years for the State of Florida, so I can show students how to seek out and avoid attractors and distractors in reading comprehension answer choices.

Knowledgeable, structured & fun!

Susan is working with my teenage son on SSAT prep, and she definitely knows her stuff. I appreciate how she uses her knowledge of cognitive processes and incorporates them into the lesson, somehow in a fun way! I feel much more confident that my son will be much better prepared for the test come fall, thanks to Susan!

Patient and Empathetic

I scheduled a session with Susan because I had been struggling to comprehend the intricacies of a literature review. She took the time to explain the purpose and procedural steps that helped me get started on a writing task that I had been avoiding. With her guidance, the task made much more sense and she assisted me to create a plan that made sense for me.

Amazing Expirence

Mrs. Susan asked great questions that helped me navigate the complicated process of college essays. She helped me dig deep inside my mind to recall memories I didn't even remember. She was really patient and she has excellent grammar. 100% would recommend her for any college essay writers

Patient and skillful tutor

Susan mentored my 16-year-old daughter through her college essay. The essay was written from scratch and is thoughtful, appropriate, and true to my daughter's character. Susan was extremely patient and flexible throughout the process which was challenging on our end. I'm so grateful to have found Susan.

Fantastic verbal/writing tutor

Used Susan for two kids to help prepare for ISEE. She did a fantastic job assessing both kids strengths and weaknesses, formulating individualized plans and strategies for each child and helping them get comfortable with each section. We will continue to use Susan for ongoing tutoring with regular schoolwork as well. Thank you Susan for your help and hard work.
