I am a retired school teacher with 29 years of teaching experience in the public school setting. I have tutored math at the college level while I myself was a student at St. Mary's University. I think there is a healthy bond between teacher and student when the teacher sets high expectations for his/her student and where the student is excited and pleased with him/herself as they begin to master areas of academia where there was previously a constant struggle. If a student has gaps of learning in a particular subject, those areas need to be addressed along with the current learning objectives.
I make it a habit to get copies of exams and graded classwork so that I can better diagnose the subject needs of the student I am tutoring. To insure continuing success I would like to remain tutoring the same student for 1 year.
Sometimes I have encountered a student with consistent failure in a certain subject area. If their self estemm is low because of that failure it can only be built up when the student starts to experience success at whatever level that may be. Once you have learned something, no one can ever take that knowledge away from you.
Wishing you great success!
