About Karla

Bio

I've been tutoring since 1986 and have a Bachelor of Science,(Pure)Mathematics degree from California State University, Hayward(now called East Bay). I was a full-time, single, working mother and full-time college student and athlete at one time. Now, I work full-time as a Math Tutor, and I am a proud grandmother of a very adorable 2-year old granddaughter! I also am a lover of animals and have 2 dogs and 3 cats of my own. They are my Math Mascots! =)

When I began tutoring, I worked with school-aged students in study skills and time management in all subjects. Now I only tutor Mathematics, but study skills, time management, and test taking strategy are all a big part of it.
I've tutored kindergarten students up through 70-year old students and teachers with masters degrees in all levels of Mathematics. I think of myself as a "Math Coach/Cheerleader/Math Therapist" when it comes to the support I like to give my students.
I teach all levels of Mathematics and all levels of students(child/adult)with or without learning disabilities.
I focus on self-confidence and self-esteem.I believe patience, encouragement, and positive feedback help motivate students. Once a student realizes that math IS manageable, he/she can feel a sense of accomplishment. And, as long as a student is patience with him/herself and gives him/herself time and credit for trying and persevering AND realizing how much he/she has learned and knows, he/she will succeed!
So, patience and perseverance is my motto! I'll work as hard as you want to work(sometimes harder!)
Please don't hesitate to call for help! =) YOU CAN DO IT!!!=)

Test Preparation

CBEST,

CBEST

I have been tutoring for almost 30 years. I've also taken the CBEST (and passed with flying colors!) which helps me to prepare my students directly from my own experience. I can share with students what they can expect to see on the actual exam. In fact, many of my students are adults entering into job positions which require specific aptitude testing, including the CBEST, GED, GRE, ASVAB (Math), TEAS, SAT Math, PSAT, STARR, Firefighters Test, PG&E Test, and CSET Math, just to name a few. I teach test strategy as well as subject matter (mainly the math) to prepare my students for the CBEST. I use different versions and editions of CBEST workbooks which include practice tests. The CBEST website also provides online sample tests which have helped many of my students get more comfortable with the format of the test. After doing practice tests over and over again, students become more comfortable and confident with test taking. They are more familiar with how the questions are asked, what kind of questions asked, what kind of answers are provided. They also learn time management in answering each question, and how to finish the test in a timely manner. CBEST workbooks also include CD's which give students even more practice with test taking. Lastly, I always make sure that a student has met his/her goal before he/she takes the exam!
TEAS,

TEAS

I have been tutoring for almost 30 years now, and have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. Many of my adult students who come to me for tutoring are Nursing students who need to pass their Math courses in order to move on and/or be accepted into the Nursing program. One of the last requirements in being accepted into the Nursing program is passing the TEAS. I like to teach my students test strategy. The more you practice the actual format of the test, the more comfortable and confident you'll feel taking the real test. Less anxiety going into the test will allow you to think better! There are free online TEAS resources, but you can also buy TEAS workbooks that provide practice tests as well as review material in the different subjects, including Math, Reading, Science, English and Language Usage. Most of the workbooks also come with CDs which include sample tests. Practicing sample tests over and over again is a great way to prepare yourself, and I can definitely help you with that!

Karla was great and my girls had a blast learning math with her. They are looking forward to their next session and that is a total win! She was patient and very encouraging. This is the exact energy that my girls respond to and I am so excited for them to continue to work with Karla.

Smart and knowledgeable!

Karla is awesome! She is very patient and understanding when you don't get what she is talking about. So, she shows you different ways to learn it, and it works! I love her, she is great! I will be using her for a couple more days...

Knowledgeable and Very Helpful

Karla has given my HS senior daughter 3 pre-calculus lessons, and in just that short time, her confidence and math scores have doubled! My daughter appreciates that if she doesn't understand the first time, Karla explains the problem from a different angle, doesn't just repeat herself, looks for what explanation makes sense to the student.

Wonderful and Patient Tutor

Our daughter is finally getting the confidence she needs to speak up in Math class and Karla has supplied her with the tools she needs over this last month to start feeling more relaxed with her Math homework. Karla really has been able assistant our daughter's understanding with Math while staying within the common core guidelines, something we could never do.

Great Tutor!

I've had Karla as my tutor for the last half of my freshman year and I don't regret it! The only thing I do regret is not getting her much earlier in the year. All of the concepts and problems I had trouble with before are now easily solvable as Karla had taught me in a way that was very simple and uncomplicated in order to help me. It's a given that I want her help for my next years of high school as well!
