My specialty is to teach high school and college students to write essays and research reports with ease and confidence. I have developed a unique method that helps students understand the process of brainstorming, writing notes, and converting them into well-developed paragraphs. Once the student has notes written in the format I teach, the written work comes together in an orderly form. Next, I analyze the writing to determine the student’s weaknesses in grammar, vocabulary, and fluency.

My lessons help students relax and have confidence in their own abilities to write. Because of my patience and encouragement, my students gain confidence in their writing skills quickly. In addition, my sense of humor keeps my students interested. Usually, my students see great progress in writing after only 8 -12 sessions. Instead of following a set curriculum, I plan each lesson for the immediate needs of each particular student, becoming a personal writing coach.

Elementary (K-6th)

After graduating from Sacramento State University I worked for one year as an assistant to a Special Education teacher of grades 2-6 with students that were educationally handicapped. I learned to work on an individual basis with students of various skill levels and personalities. After that I worked as an assistant to a public school Kindergarten teacher for a year, learning to teach reading and phonics. I taught grades 1-4 for 8 years in a private school and then worked as teacher and administrator in a different private school (grades K - 12). During the entire 19 years of teaching I was tutoring students one to one using self instructional curriculum. As students needed help with any one of 8 subjects I became their individual tutor. My instruction was tailored to meet the learning needs, preferences and goals of individual students. I used resources and approaches necessary to connect with a student and practices that have proved successful for similar students. I now have 10 grandchildren who I have tutored at various times. I believe I have the necessary experience to tutor grades K-6.

I have tutored home school students for many years in every subject. For the past 20 years, I have tutored many home-school children in charter schools and private home schools with great success. My essay writing method is easy for students as young as 7 years old to grasp. My students improve by as much as 1 year on state tests after months of writing lessons. Additionally, my experience in phonics and reading comprehension gives me the ability to help students read fluently with improved vocabulary and accuracy. My patience, kindness, and humor encourage the students to try to do their best and to pay attention during lessons.

Having taught high school English for over two decades, I am familiar with weaknesses that most students have in grammar and writing. My SAT writing exercises are designed to prepare students to answer the SAT multiple choice questions and to write excellent paragraphs as prompted on the exam. As I teach writing skills and grammar, my lessons will equip students to discern significant differences in multiple choice answers in order to rule out incorrect answers and confidently choose the correct answer. So much emphasis has been placed on the SAT exam scores, students need to learn the techniques that will give them the best opportunity to improve their scores.

Knowledgeable, Dedicated and Patient tutor

My son is going to second grade. He needs some help in english reading. Jane was able to make him comfortable right away. The first session was about accessing his skill level. Jane made the whole session a fun and my son was very comfortable and enjoyed the whole session. Jane is very knowledgeable and patient. We feel very lucky that we found her and I am sure that my son would enjoy learning from her.

Tutor responded:

Jay is a great student. Although he is young, he did cooperate with me, and he read stories aloud, which many young children refuse to do on their first lesson. He is sharp and attentive for his age, and learns quickly. I always enjoy working with young children. Jane West

compassionate & knowledgeable

We feel so fortunate to have found Mrs West and her expertise with teaching kids writing skills is unmatched by anyone else I have used in the past. Check out her website it does a great job of explaining her method and skills. My son dislikes writing and wishes he didn’t have to do it but he loves his teacher/tutor Mrs West and that is important when it’s a subject your kid has struggled with in the past in public school.

Great Tutor!

Midway through 5th grade, my son’s teacher held a conference with us to discuss my son’s writing. He is very smart in many areas but he was struggling with writing. He was below grade level and falling further behind. I sought out tutoring for him and found Jane. What a blessing! We began seeing immediate improvements! Now 9 months later, we just had our 1st trimester conference of 6th grade. My son’s teacher can’t believe he was behind or ever even needed a tutor! Jane’s kindness and sweet nature is apparent from the moment you meet her. She is very organized and I have seen her work with incredible patience and care. That said, my favorite thing about Jane is that I love how creative she is when engaging her students. She appeals to my son’s sense of humor which makes learning interesting and he truly enjoys working with her. I have unwavering faith in Jane and her tutoring abilities!
