About Maeryn

Bio

I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Maryland-College Park working on my PhD in Political Science with an emphasis on international relations and quantitative methodology. My dissertation explores how autocratic states respond to the imposition of economic sanctions domestically, and how those domestic behaviors impact sanction outcomes. I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Maryland-College Park working on my PhD in Political Science with an emphasis on international relations and quantitative methodology. My dissertation explores how autocratic states respond to the imposition of economic sanctions domestically, and how those domestic behaviors impact sanction outcomes. I've taught courses on International Relations, International Conflict and Development, Political Methodology and Statistics, and International Negotiations. I have also spent a year working as an economist and analyst at the United States International Trade Commission. Outside of work and school, I enjoy pottery, yoga, and gardening--or at least I'm learning how to garden. I'm not very good at it.

In undergrad I worked as a writing tutor for a couple of years. I have had a lot of experience editing the papers of my students, my peers and myself and have a good intuition for what works and what doesn't when it comes to writing. I know how to help students develop their own voice while learning the basic fundamentals of strong writing skills. Personally, I believe the most important step to writing is developing a strong structure to your piece and outline, outline, outline! My philosophy towards education and teaching is that students can learn as much as they put into a subject. I am simply a facilitator. I love to see students learn and grow and I have been known to sit with students for hours reviewing essays and working through problems with them, but I can't learn for you--you must do the work. However, as long as you are willing to put in the effort, I will support you in every way possible.

My hours are fairly flexible. Although I prefer to meet during the day, I can make myself available in the evenings as is necessary. While I do have a 8 hour cancellation policy--barring extenuating circumstances, I can make myself available for make-up sessions. I prefer to meet in public places such as a library or coffee shop, but for younger students

As a political science graduate student, my areas of specialization are international relations and quantitative methodology. At the graduate level, I have complete coursework in Multilevel Modeling, Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Spatial Analysis, and Formal Theory. I have passed my comprehensive exams in quantitative methodology and also audited a course on Time Series Analysis. In addition to my formal coursework, I also have worked extensively as a research assistant, where much of my time was spent preparing, cleaning, and gathering data. I have also used econometrics in my own research. I have presented papers that rely heavily on sophisticated econometric techniques at multiple, well-respected national and international political science conferences. In terms of familiarity with software, I am highly trained in using Stata and SPSS, I also have some exposure to ArcGIS and Geoda. As a teaching assistant for Introduction to Political Methodology, my primary responsibilities included exposing my students to the basics of political statistical analysis, interpreting political models, and using SPSS.

Fantastic tutor with an outstanding work ethic!

I needed some very last minute help with running logit regressions in Stata for my term paper in political science. Maeryn took the time to analyze and play with the data before our session so that she would be fully prepared to help me.
