I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Maryland-College Park working on my PhD in Political Science with an emphasis on international relations and quantitative methodology. My dissertation explores how autocratic states respond to the imposition of economic sanctions domestically, and how those domestic behaviors impact sanction outcomes. I've taught courses on International Relations, International Conflict and Development, Political Methodology and Statistics, and International Negotiations. I have also spent a year working as an economist and analyst at the United States International Trade Commission. Outside of work and school, I enjoy pottery, yoga, and gardening--or at least I'm learning how to garden. I'm not very good at it.

In undergrad I worked as a writing tutor for a couple of years. I have had a lot of experience editing the papers of my students, my peers and myself and have a good intuition for what works and what doesn't when it comes to writing. I know how to help students develop their own voice while learning the basic fundamentals of strong writing skills. Personally, I believe the most important step to writing is developing a strong structure to your piece and outline, outline, outline! My philosophy towards education and teaching is that students can learn as much as they put into a subject. I am simply a facilitator. I love to see students learn and grow and I have been known to sit with students for hours reviewing essays and working through problems with them, but I can't learn for you--you must do the work. However, as long as you are willing to put in the effort, I will support you in every way possible.

My hours are fairly flexible. Although I prefer to meet during the day, I can make myself available in the evenings as is necessary. While I do have a 8 hour cancellation policy--barring extenuating circumstances, I can make myself available for make-up sessions. I prefer to meet in public places such as a library or coffee shop, but for younger students

Econometrics

Econometrics

As a political science graduate student, my areas of specialization are international relations and quantitative methodology. At the graduate level, I have complete coursework in Multilevel Modeling, Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Spatial Analysis, and Formal Theory. I have passed my comprehensive exams in quantitative methodology and also audited a course on Time Series Analysis. In addition to my formal coursework, I also have worked extensively as a research assistant, where much of my time was spent preparing, cleaning, and gathering data. I have also used econometrics in my own research. I have presented papers that rely heavily on sophisticated econometric techniques at multiple, well-respected national and international political science conferences. In terms of familiarity with software, I am highly trained in using Stata and SPSS, I also have some exposure to ArcGIS and Geoda. As a teaching assistant for Introduction to Political Methodology, my primary responsibilities included exposing my students to the basics of political statistical analysis, interpreting political models, and using SPSS.

SPSS,

SPSS

In my capacity as a teaching assistant, I taught Introduction to Political Methodology, which focused on exposing students to the craft of political science--which mostly involved having them work through basic political analysis on SPSS. My role was to walk them through the basics of SPSS, introduce them to the software, and teach them how to run models in addition to introducing them to some basic statistics. In addition to this, I have also used SPSS to some extent in my own analysis and research, though I tend to rely more on STATA.
STATA

STATA

I am currently working on my PhD in political science with an emphasis on international relations and quantitative methods. To this end, I have taken a completed coursework in advanced econometrics including MLE, Advanced MLE, multilevel analysis, and spatial analysis. I have relied heavily on the STATA software. Additionally, I have taught courses on econometrics at the undergraduate level. Outside of my coursework and teaching, I have also completed research that relied on empirical analysis that was conducted using STATA.

Proofreading

I am currently a graduate student at the University of Maryland working on my PhD in political science. As an undergraduate student, I worked as a writing fellow at the University of Iowa, a prestigious writing tutoring program. As a graduate student, I have helped numerous students work on their writing, often spending long periods of time one-on-one identifying specific problems with grammar, mechanics, and sentence structure. In addition to this, I often spend time line editing my student's work while grading it, so they don't make similar mistakes in the future. Finally, while working as a research assistant I edited a number of academic papers for a professor on my advising committee.

Statistics

As an undergraduate student at the University of Iowa I took multiple courses in statistics--Intro through Advanced Statistics. As a graduate student I have completed coursework in Multi-Variate Regression, Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Multilevel Modeling, Spatial Modeling, and audited coursework on Time Series Analysis. I've taught courses on political modeling--which was effectively a basic stats course, at the college level. I have worked with a wide range of statistical software packages including: Stata, SPSS, R, ArcGIS, GEODA, and Winbugs.

Study Skills

I am currently a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Maryland and have completed my fifth year of study there. That translates to four years of high school, four years of college, five years of graduate school (so far), and two comprehensive exams to remain in my doctoral program. My program at the University of Maryland required approximately 3 1/2 years of coursework, each semester entailing either a final exam or paper--often both, sometimes multiple papers. In short, I've taken approximately 21 semester's worth of finals in my life at this point and have done exceedingly well at them to have reached the point where I am working on my dissertation. I know most of the tricks in the books, and if the skills I know aren't working for you, I can invent new ones.

I'm a PhD student at the University of Maryland studying Political Science. I worked as a writing tutor during my undergraduate studies, and as a teaching assistant at UMD I have helped many of my undergraduate students develop their writing skills. I tend to focus on organizational concepts such as paper structure, paragraph structure, and sentence structure when necessary. I also tend to really emphasize the importance of outlining, brainstorming, and planning out what you're going to write before beginning a paper--it makes things a lot easier. While I can help students with grammar and vocabulary, I tend to find the former are more important when establishing foundations to good writing.

Fantastic tutor with an outstanding work ethic!

I needed some very last minute help with running logit regressions in Stata for my term paper in political science. Maeryn took the time to analyze and play with the data before our session so that she would be fully prepared to help me. She was flexible with her availability, had full knowledge and command of Stata, and explained everything in a way that was very easily understood. I am so grateful to have found her and would recommend her to anyone in the social sciences needing assistance with quantitative papers!

Knowledgeable and Helpful Tutor

I had Maeryn help me edit a paper and her feedback was very helpful. She was able to help me structure the paper so the argument and thesis were much clearer. I highly recommend Maeryn if one has any questions in regards to writing and research. Thank you again!

Great Stata Tutoring

Maeryn was amazing. She was very patient and understanding with me. You really get more than what you pay for. She really knows what she's speaking about and is very good at explaining it in simpler terms.
