About Patrick

Bio

As a former newspaper writer, writing is my specialty. I am also fit to teach those topics that come under the English umbrella such as grammar, literature, reading and preparing for a presentation.

I have training in English as a second language from Oxford Seminars, despite having never taught in that area as of yet.

My graduate coursework is in a variety of teaching methods, specializing in English content.

Grammar,

Grammar

Regarding grammar, as with all of the other subjects that are English - related, I hope I can help students want to learn simply because they love learning. When I substitute in a classroom, I often tell students that students their age in other countries are required to learn English, and in our country they do not experience the challenge students in other countries do. Learning grammar is part of their growth as a person.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

Proofreading and being able to recognize errors in one's own work as well as the work of others is a necessary part of students' development toward becoming critical thinkers. A student may have fine ideas for an essay. It is the development of his or her ability to edit one's own work that can finish a fine essay.

Reading,

Reading

A lot of students feel outside pressures without a real understanding of what it means to be true to themselves. Reading and writing can stimulate their thinking. A lot of students of all ages have issues with trust, entitlement and boundaries. Reading, whether it is for fun or the material assigned by their teachers, can challenge students to think about the issues they feel conflicted about. I want to teach students to welcome challenge, and to seek out the work that is most relevant to their lives.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary, I think, is one area in which being a role model does not necessarily help a student. For a lot of students, their fear of embarrassment may restrict them from learning more. I hope that by introducing new words, they would want to know more. Younger students need to learn which words are opposites of one another, and that approach would serve them well long after they become motivated to learn new words on their own. As students grow into their teens, I hope they understand learning vocabulary is part of what it means to think critically. A desirable outcome would be for students to realize on their own that continuously learning new words can help them make good decisions.

English

ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

Reading is easy and fun for me. At the risk of making a statement you may see repeated later on, I want students to translate from reading to think of how a passage can nurture their thinking about true - life events. If students do not reach that peak, they may begin learning to think critically.

Literature,

Literature

Reading literature and becoming a competent writer are two sides of the same coin. Both enhance cognitive development, and also as they continue to read and write well into their adult years, they will maintain mental sharpness. As students recognize connections between a piece of literature and their lives, they will nurtures a development of understanding people.

I hope to communicate to a student to understand the complexities of our language. For some students, such complexities are clear, but not enjoyable. I hope to convey that we sound more professional and credible if we write and speak correctly. I can tutor about such things as tense consistency, who and whom, how to identify a gerund and the differences between its and it's.

Writing

I walked away from the journalism profession years ago, but never lost my love for writing. While my colleagues struggle to get through writing at work and in their academics, writing comes naturally for me. I want to impart to students the benefits and joys of writing. Whether students struggle with an assignment about grammar, journal writing, or writing about fiction, I want to help them bring out the best in themselves.
