Let my years of experience as both a teacher and tutor help you! I earned my B.A. in Mathematical Sciences from Clemson University with a minor in Philosophy, as well as an A.M. and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Dartmouth College. For the last fifteen years, I have taught mathematics and statistics courses in the college classroom and online, winning awards for my teaching and my research. I love all things quantitative, including logic and puzzles, and bring that enthusiasm for mathematics everywhere I use it.

Starting in high school, I realized how much I enjoyed helping friends and classmates grasp some of the more difficult concepts in our classes. There are few feelings like seeing a frustrated friend smile at that “aha” moment. I tutored a number of my fellow students in high school and college in subjects ranging from 10th grade Geometry to Differential Equations. Since graduating I have tutored in a one-on-one setting for local high school and college students in both New Hampshire and Maine. In the last ten years, I have tutored learners ranging in age from 15 to at least 30, in topics including statistics, precalculus, calculus, multivariable calculus, and number theory.

My favorite college teachers introduced me to the effectiveness of both inquiry-based learning and groupwork in teaching mathematics. Both methods involve students working problems as not just practice, but a fundamental part of the learning process, exploring their ideas to build a more general concept. My tutoring style is also problem-based: I like to start with a small set of example problems to work on together. Each learner’s process is different and I aim to explore what suits each one individually. There are often multiple ways to solve a problem, and I can flexibly verify which ones will always work. We then piece together the broader principles that help us come up with an effective general strategy.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

My graduate work was in number theory, including elements in sequences/series, combinatorics, and algorithmic run-time analysis. I have extensive teaching experience at the college level ranging from Pre-algebra through graduate level Geometry, including multiple sections of Discrete Mathematics. I absolutely love this subject, and my range of teaching experience gives me a unique ability to break it down in an easy-to-understand way.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I first taught Finite Mathematics as a graduate student at Dartmouth, where coincidentally, the course was first conceived in the late 50's. Since then, I have taught the course about a dozen times. I also reviewed four textbooks on Finite Mathematics and authored a number of questions for a publisher-owned homework system tied to another Finite Mathematics textbook.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

As a college teacher for the last 15 years, I have had a good bit of experience teaching linear algebra and related topics. This includes applied linear algebra topics, such as vectors, matrix equations, and parameterizations of systems of linear equations, and the usual basis, dimension, eigenvalue/eigenvector ideas in R^n. I have also taught more abstract versions of linear algebra including vector spaces over fields with the above topics. I have also taught abstract algebra a handful of times and as a mathematician with an active reasearch program in number theory, I am quite familiar with proof techniques.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Jonathan was a phenomenal tutor. His teaching style helped tremendously. He guided me but also made sure I truly understood the work myself. I'm super grateful for his help and will continue to reach out to him when I need assistance.

Very knowledgeable in statistics and very professional

We are very lucky to find him in our very first try! He is very professional and fast in problem solving. The man a gem when comes to statistic, so far not a problem he can not solve nor explain.

Thuy, 7 lessons with Jonathan

Expert in statistics

Jonathan answered and reviewed all my questions on inferential statistics. He explained where I’d made mistakes and went over critical values in hypothesis testing, we met several times before my final exam. He was patient, knowledgeable, and very flexible.

Adrienne , 3 lessons with Jonathan

CLearly knowledgeable and understanding towards his students.

Jonathan helped me review some Maths related to trigonometric identities, logarithms, Euler's identity by practicing exercises and explaining the process through which a solution is derived -- which helped me immensely.

Positive Progress

(this was for my son) College Algebra. My son made a god chunk of progress with Jonathan in a subject he has always struggled with. We look forward to working with him again.

Repeat, customer

I’ve worked with Jonathan several times on probability and statistics. He never disappoints! He was always prepared for lessons, and is excellent at helping you to understand the concept. I highly recommend him, as he is one of the best on Wyzants.

Knowledgeable and Insightful Tutor

I haven't taken calculus since high school, so I was nervous going into the subject in a college level. However, Mr. Jonathan is great at explaining all of the concepts, and guides you through the thought process involved in answering a question. He is great at explaining calculus, especially to people who are not very confident in math! Great and knowledgeable tutor overall!

The best! Period

I can’t imagine a better tutor than Jon. He is patient and flexible with his schedule. He always explains things in the simplest way. He is a true master of his craft. I highly recommend him.
