Committed to providing quality, individualized educational services, I am excited at the prospect of working with you. With six years of classroom teaching and over two decades of tutoring experience, I am equipped to guide nearly every motivated student to the realization of his or her educational goals.

Based in the Bay Area for the past twelve years, I am a native of South Carolina. I am a 1993 graduate of the Great Books-oriented curriculum at St. John’s College, Santa Fe. In addition, I did coursework in 1988 at Harvard University (Celtic studies and space-time physics) and received certification in the Geometer’s Sketchpad through UC Berkeley in November 2007. I was drawn to the Bay Area for its pleasant climate, natural beauty, intriguing history, superb opportunities and amenities, cultural riches and social diversity. Over the years, I have worked in the fields of education, journalism, publishing, technology, and music. I am a passionate lover of knowledge and a devotee of artistic expression in all its forms. I have tutored nearly every academic subject, worked with every age from elementary school children to graduate students, have helped students prepare for standardized tests and college admissions, and have taught mathematics (Prealgebra, Algebra, Geometry, and Precalculus), Latin I, English literature and composition, and music at the middle school and/or high school levels. A published poet, journalist, and blogger, I have mentored students in the art of writing for nearly two decades. I also have taught musicianship, theory, repertoire, and improvisation on guitar and mandolin to kids and adults alike.

A constant student and able improvisor, I strive to remain flexible and responsive to the changing needs of my clientele. I look forward to hearing from new students!

History

Bible Studies,

Bible Studies

From an early age, I was passionate about the Bible. I had much of it committed to memory by my early teens and composed and presented sermons for Bible study nights at my church. In my senior year of high school, I received first place in the Old Testament and second place in the New Testament at Anderson College's academic symposium. From 1989 to 1993, I attended St. John's College in Santa Fe, NM, where I studied not only the Bible but also seminal works of Augustine, Anselm, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, and Kierkegaard. On my own, I have done extensive reading in both the Jewish and Christian traditions (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, and Gnostic). I am well-versed in the literature of Christian apologetics, including Chesterton, Lewis, Cox, and Buechner.
