I have always been passionate about languages, and my native English is no exception. I studied English up to the highest AP level in high school and considered pursuing a BA in English. Studying foreign languages at the university level instead has provided me with a greater understanding of language acquisition, a skill I put into practice professionally when I tutored middle school ESL students in English for one year. I believe that an interactive, direct method of language pedagogy is the most effective; I employ my mastery of English in engaging conversation and instruction to the highest benefit of the student.

French

The language and the culture of France have been two of my greatest passions since I first began to study French over 15 years ago. I went on to complete a BA in French at the University of Bristol in the UK, graduating with first class honors and an oral distinction. I also immersed myself in the language and culture by working and studying in both Paris and the south of France. I believe that an interactive, direct method of language pedagogy is the most effective; I can employ my mastery of French in engaging conversation and instruction to the highest benefit of the student. I have experience tutoring learners of both English and French, and am eager to share my love of language and culture with students of all levels!

I studied piano formally under a teacher and performed as an accompanist for several years, and have continued to learn and play the instrument on my own for over thirteen years. I approach teaching the piano with a balance of patient investigation of technique and an enthusiasm for the performance of great musical pieces.

Excellent Teacher!

Karsen has been helping me with my French studies. He's extremely knowledgeable in the language. The time he takes to explain details and the patience he shows, have been a big help to me. He reinforces my confidence level and makes me comfortable with the course work I have from classes. I have really enjoyed spending time with him, and can highly recommend him to anyone who is interested in the French language.

French

Mr. Karsen has been a great teacher and a wonderful fit for my son in 8th grade trying to learn French. We are not native French speakers and have no clue about French. My son is very interested but needed additional help apart from school as his grades have been going down with teachers moving from school so often. Mr. Karsen asked for material being taught in school and was so diligent in preparing similar lesson plans for practice. Also, he helped with HW and review material as well. In just 3 classes, he got my boy up to speed and into the A grades. Knowledge wise also he identified the gaps in his learning well and imparted the knowledge in such a way that my boy gained confidence and clarity. We are so appreciative of Mr. Karsen and will continue to work with him. He is accommodative about the timings and straightforward when it comes to charging for lessons and his fees are very reasonable to and in our affordable range. Mr. Karsen’s mindset as a teacher differentiates him from all others and helped us have a wonderful experience.

Helpful, intelligent, accommodating

Karsen was incredibly well organized, knew his stuff, and also accommodated my request to run our French lesson in French. He was able to clearly explain the intricacies of certain grammatical and semantic points that I'd had confusion on. Thanks!

Karsen is a great teacher!

Very approachable teaching style, made it easy to sit down and start learning fast. We spent some time covering theory and then jumped in and played a basic song.

Knowledgeable and very patient piano tutor.

My sons, 13 and 10 years old, take piano lessons with Karsen. They both enjoy practicing with Karsen. Their piano teacher decided to retire since she didn't offer online lessons. We are glad that find Karsen on Wyzant. The boys definitely are overdue for skill refreshing and improvement. Music Iearning is something that we should keep ongoing. They found that it's very easy to work with Karsen. He taught them to read the music, and how to practice it. Karsen is very patient. What we love about his piano lessons is that he know how to get the students engaged. Great to work with you, Karsen! We are looking forward to having more lessons with you.

Thoughtful, patient, and knowledgeable piano tuto

Karsen and I worked through some of the basics of music theory and piano fundamentals in our first lesson. I really enjoyed his socratic method of teaching and that he assigns homework for the next week. He's incredibly knowledgeable and very easy to work with.

Great piano teacher

I've been learning from Karsen for almost a year. I didn't know anything about the Piano when I had started. He has been great right from the beginning and is able to adapt to the pace of the student very well. He is also really flexible which is something I really needed to be able to accommodate my work schedule. I definitely recommend him to anyone who is looking to learn to play the piano.

Patient and supportive

This was my first piano lesson ever, and Karsen was very patient as I tried to charge through learning scales and reading notes. I have much to practice!

Very responsive, professional and engaged French tutor

Karsen tutored my eleven year old daughter in French. He is easy to reach and flexible in making arrangements. He checks in before lessons to confirm the time. Most importantly, he was responsive to feedback that I gave him and adjusted his lessons accordingly. I highly recommend Karsen!
