Bio

Hello! My name is Darby, and I have been an avid math nerd since I was very young. I first started tutoring when I was about 14 years old, and have enjoyed doing so ever since. I am currently employed as a controls system engineer in the mid-west, but regardless of my career choices or school obligations, I have always actively helped others meet their school goals.

I am currently employed as a controls system engineer in the mid-west, but regardless of my career choices or school obligations, I have always actively helped others meet their school goals.
Previous to my employment as a control systems engineer, I worked for Kumon Math and Reading as the head math instructor. I taught in the main classroom for nearly five years, and continue to help others through their online utilities on the weekends and a few weekdays throughout the week. I have been quite successful at helping the students of Kumon meet their math & reading related goals, and I am quite proud to say so!
My current skill set allows me to help with many levels of mathematics, English, physics, programming, standardized tests, etc. I have thousands of hours of experience tutoring/teaching very diverse age groups. My experience ranges from helping youngsters as young as 3 learn to read & count numbers to college students taking physics and calculus, and everywhere in between. If you or someone you know needs help with standardized test preparation (TEAS, SAT, ACT, etc.), algebra, calculus, geometry, trigonometry, physics, English or anything else in my education wheelhouse, I am here to help.

Common Core

I have been tutoring common core privately since its adoption in California. My studies to be an Engineer required me to take many advanced math classes, and several advanced ELA classes as well. I am capable of tutoring any math up to and including differential equations, and I am well versed on the current ELA standards of Common Core. I also have considerable experience in the STEAM field as well, and I am quite capable of helping students learn to become better with presentations, collaboration projects and public speaking as this is also a standard of Common Core.

Elementary (K-6th)

K-6 learning involves a typical two-step learning process. From K-2 (sometimes 3) the student begins with the learning to read approach, and from 3-6 the student is now reading to learn. I feel I am qualified to instruct children in this stage due to 3 things: my knowledge and mastery of the subjects they will be learning day to day, my background in psychology to assist with a child's thought process, and my knowledge of child development to further assist with relating the material to the child's age group.

Test Preparation

CBEST,

CBEST

The CBEST is a test designed to test one's skills in reading, writing and mathematics. I excel at these three subjects and have helped several people through their hardships with the subjects that pertain to this test. Mathematics plays right into my major, and I have completed many classes up to and including calculus (the mathematics subjects on the test only get as difficult as geometry). Reading and writing are two other skills I excel at. I am confident with my abilities to tutor this subject, since English 101, the latest English class I have completed, happens to focus primarily on reading and writing skills.

TEAS,

TEAS

The TEAS test (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is a test typically taken by those entering the field of nursing. The test focuses on four fields. they are Math, Science, Language and English. The math portion is comprised of arithmetic up through advanced algebra and geometry, which I am qualified to teach with my background in math including all fields up to and including calculus. The Science on the test is comprised of basic biology, chemistry and very basic physics skills, such as: simple chromosomal questions, questions on Boyle's law, acids, Archimedes' principle, and other common science skills. All of which I have covered in college and high school in several different classes, making me an effective tutor in those areas. The final two areas are English and Language usage. The areas cover reading comprehension, vocabulary, and sentence structure. English language skills just so happened to be my minor in college, and I have completed several classes on the subject, making me more than capable of teaching writing strategies, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and sentence structure.
