My name is Jeremy. I hold a BA degree in Computer Science from Macalester College, and I am currently working towards my master’s. I have been in the computer science and software development field for nearly four years.

I have been a tutor with another platform since December of 2021. As a tutor, I have helped students from middle school age to graduate school students. I typically help students with Java, Python, SQL, and web development.

When I tutor, I use the following three teaching methods: tiered instruction, which allows me to look at the bigger concerns over the smaller mistakes; scaffolding, to allow me to build a student up to where they need to be if they aren’t quite where they should be or are looking to be; and student-centered learning, which allows students to have more control with their learning and interact with the materials with as much or as little intervention from me as they need.

These approaches are always used with a few learning theories in mind, such as John Dewey and Lev Vygotsky. John Dewey’s theory that students learn more when they can connect to their past experiences is very applicable to Computer Science. Coding languages have similarities between them. When a student learns one coding language, they can often infer and use those similarities to understand and quickly pick up another language. These connections and similarities allow me to help students better understand their problems and find solutions. Vygotsky’s zones of proximity allow me to determine where students can perform without support, where they are completely lost, and where they can do it with some support from me.
