As an organ major - many years ago - it was suggested that I double major in music theory and composition - a choice and combination that I have loved for communicated for all of these years.

I am a complete believer in theory making performance come ever more and more alive. No matter what level or part of theory you be at, this will be the approach that I use - whether teaching you the value of understanding tendency tones or the intricacies of 18th century counterpoint, your theory work should serve to open your eyes, ears (and yes, even heart!) to an even greater understanding of your musical medium and its specific musical language.

I have a Masters from the Eastman School of Music.

I have taught music theory and history, ear training and composition for over thirty years to high school and college age students. Many of my students have gone on to professional careers in music - a real joy to see. I have also spent these years continuing to develop my own skills through and active performing career that requires me to understand the theory which I teach!

It would be a great delight to work with any of you as active musicians, wanting to work and progress to understand and communicate this incredible art form in which we are all involved. Contact me - I have a flexible schedule and can easily work through online platforms as well as live! I look forward to hearing from you!

Composition (Music)

Since 1989, I have been responsible for the coordination and teaching of a theory program for a professional arts and music program which includes composition class and private instruction. Recently, one of my former students who went on to become a professional composer had a work premiered by the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra. Being a professional organist, improvisation has always been constitutive to my work and is a close companion to composition, which has allowed me the possibility of bringing both to students of composition.

Piano

Piano

It has long been a given that an organist have a fine background in piano, which I was fortunate to have. Having taught organ and performed on both organ and piano for more than 30 years, I love being able to work with both beginning and advanced students because each has so many fascinating concepts to learn and incorporate into themselves. It's a wonderful thing to help them achieve it. I have been a professional accompanist and organist for Gloriae Dei Cantores for more than 30 years which has afforded me the experience of which I speak.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

As a distinct and crucial part of a theory program, I have spent over 25 years teaching and coaching ear training. As I was taught myself many years ago, ear training skills must continue to develop along with theory and performance skills in order to be the best possible musician. I still believe that today and that is my approach in working with anyone, on any level, for ear training.
Music Theory,

Music Theory

Hi. I have a BM from Southern Methodist University and an MM and DMA from the Eastman school of music, all in organ and music theory. I have been teaching now for over 35 years and the joy of helping a student unlock a piece of music through theory only grows greater as I get older! I would love to hear from you!

Jim has helped me immensely in becoming a better musician

I'm taking lessons from Jim to help improve my pipe organ technique and playing. He is a wonderful and engaging teacher who pays such close attention to detail. For example, his direction on correcting my posture and other small changes made during our lessons has helped my musicianship immensely. I always look forward to my lessons with him. For those who would like to become better musicians, I highly recommend taking lessons with Jim. You will see many positive changes right away!
