I have loved tutoring/teaching math (pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, precalculus, calculus) for over 22 years. I am a credentialed classroom teacher, but I love working one-on-one with students because it allows me to quickly figure out their learning style and to tailor my instruction to what works for them. I believe that it is necessary to teach math for understanding rather than having students memorizing procedures, and it is probably through my engineering background that I recognize that it is critical to break down problems and concepts into steps, the size of which depends directly on the needs of the student. I strongly believe that everyone can be successful at math, and my goal is to give students the tools and confidence they need to achieve success.

Before earning my secondary teaching credential, I worked as a math tutor for 3rd through 5th graders in a public elementary school. Due to this experience, I am able to explain math concepts at a level that is developmentally appropriate. I enjoy engaging students this age with fun puzzles and activities that at the same time deepen their conceptual understanding. Students who struggle with math are especially in need of a confidence-boosting experience, and they need to know that excellent mathematicians are MADE and not born.

I think I have more appreciation now for the beauty and power of calculus than I did when I first learned it! It's so rewarding to explain these concepts to students, and watch their excitement when things all start to make sense. Calculus is so much easier for students when they understand the physical significance of derivatives and integrals, so I spend a great deal of time working on that with them. As an engineer, it's very rewarding to be able to share the relevance of these concepts for solving practical problems such as related rates and optimizations.

Although a student may have excelled at algebra, geometry can often be challenging if they're not an extremely visual learner or processor. In my work with geometry students, I encourage them to look at diagrams, proofs, etc. in at least a couple of ways, finding alternative strategies whenever possible so that their "toolbox" will be more extensive for future problems.

I taught middle school PreAlgebra in the classroom for seven years, and had a blast! I have a large library of enrichment material for those students who need/want additional challenges, and I also have experience tailoring my explanations to meet the learning style of students who are having difficulty with the content.

Pre-calculus is often somewhat of a survey course without a unified curriculum, and I have been able to help students tie together the various topics and explain how they will be important in their future math courses. Whether it's explaining the relevance of polar graphs or giving examples of trig applications, I am able to guide them through this important transition to calculus and beyond.

I have tutored a number of students both for the regular SAT and the SAT2 subject test. One of those students received a score of 800, and told me that I was a huge help for him in scoring that high. Although I tutor and teach all secondary courses up through Calculus, the bulk of my students are taught/tutored in pre-algebra through algebra 2, which is the major content source for the SAT. I am able not only to review the separate topics covered on the test, but also tie topics together so that students don't need to rely upon memorization.

Restored my son's confidence in math.

After a couple of tough years of math in middle school, my son started saying, "I'm just not meant to be good at math." This past year, Rebecca has been tutoring him, and it has made all the difference. Rebecca is a skilled teacher. She explains concepts clearly and easily zeros in on areas that need more attention. Amazing Geometry teacher

Rebecca is a kind and understanding tutor, she strives hard for making a class worthwhile and maybe even fun. I've been working with her for a while with geometry and I have to say that she knows a wide range of those problems. We have gone through most of my first semester, and our class usually looks like me throwing out problems and Rebecca analyzing and explaining it thoroughly to me. I'm also very glad that she can almost answer all the questions in a heartbeat without preparing. For example, we often get POCs or some sort of extra assignment for every week and she explains it calmly to me. I am very happy about having an opportunity working with her!

For the past year, my daughter studies math with Rebecca. Before having lessons with Rebecca, my daughter had a hard time to understand basic concepts about pre-algebra. Rebecca stepped in a few months into my son's semester, and was instrumental in providing him with the help he needed to get back on track in geometry. In his accelerated class topics are covered quickly, and so it is easy for students to fall behind. Our 9th grade daughter started working with Rebecca shortly after the start of the school year and they've been meeting weekly since then. The sessions are an opportunity for my daughter to ask questions about topics she is covering in school that may not be entirely clear or to get ahead on upcoming topics. Even though she doesn't always know what topics my daughter will want to discuss before the sessions, Rebecca is able to teach the topic in a clear and concise, step-by-step way.
