Time for summer scheduling! Whether your student would like to preview the coming year's material, prep for a placement test, get help with a summer course, fill some gaps, or just have fun with some enrichment activities, I'd be happy to help! I am excited about helping students of all levels and abilities understand math concepts and practices. With my guidance, students experience a boost in confidence and skill level, resulting in better grades and a better attitude towards math. Please do make sure that you are either within my 10 mile travel radius or are willing to work with me online.

I have loved tutoring/teaching math (pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, precalculus, calculus) for over 22 years. I am a credentialed classroom teacher, but I love working one-on-one with students because it allows me to quickly figure out their learning style and to tailor my instruction to what works for them. I believe that it is necessary to teach math for understanding rather than having students memorizing procedures, and it is probably through my engineering background that I recognize that it is critical to break down problems and concepts into steps, the size of which depends directly on the needs of the student. I strongly believe that everyone can be successful at math, and my goal is to give students the tools and confidence they need to achieve success.

Elementary Math

Before earning my secondary teaching credential, I worked as a math tutor for 3rd through 5th graders in a public elementary school. Due to this experience, I am able to explain math concepts at a level that is developmentally appropriate. I enjoy engaging students this age with fun puzzles and activities that at the same time deepen their conceptual understanding. Students who struggle with math are especially in need of a confidence-boosting experience, and they need to know that excellent mathematicians are MADE and not born.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

My years of experience tutoring students (and teaching Algebra 1 in public schools) has been invaluable for recognizing common misconceptions and developing explanations that students can really understand. I enjoy highlighting the connections between topics for students, through which they gain a deeper understanding of the math concepts. A strong foundation in Algebra 1 will serve them well for the remainder of their math education.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

My years of experience tutoring students (and teaching Algebra 2 in public schools) has given me an excellent understanding of the connections throughout the secondary curriculum. I am able to explain to students how their prior knowledge can be applied to new material, as well as motivate them by explaining how they'll use the information in future classes. Algebra 2 is one of my favorite courses, because students' understanding of what they learned in Algebra 1 is deepened and expanded; they begin to understand more of the "why" in addition to the "how".
Calculus,

Calculus

I think I have more appreciation now for the beauty and power of calculus than I did when I first learned it! It's so rewarding to explain these concepts to students, and watch their excitement when things all start to make sense. Calculus is so much easier for students when they understand the physical significance of derivatives and integrals, so I spend a great deal of time working on that with them. As an engineer, it's very rewarding to be able to share the relevance of these concepts for solving practical problems such as related rates and optimizations.
Geometry,

Geometry

Although a student may have excelled at algebra, geometry can often be challenging if they're not an extremely visual learner or processor. In my work with geometry students, I encourage them to look at diagrams, proofs, etc. in at least a couple of ways, finding alternative strategies whenever possible so that their "toolbox" will be more extensive for future problems.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I taught middle school PreAlgebra in the classroom for seven years, and had a blast! I have a large library of enrichment material for those students who need/want additional challenges, and I also have experience tailoring my explanations to meet the learning style of students who are having difficulty with the content.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Pre-calculus is often somewhat of a survey course without a unified curriculum, and I have been able to help students tie together the various topics and explain how they will be important in their future math courses. Whether it's explaining the relevance of polar graphs or giving examples of trig applications, I am able to guide them through this important transition to calculus and beyond.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have tutored a number of students both for the regular SAT and the SAT2 subject test. One of those students received a score of 800, and told me that I was a huge help for him in scoring that high. Although I tutor and teach all secondary courses up through Calculus, the bulk of my students are taught/tutored in pre-algebra through algebra 2, which is the major content source for the SAT. I am able not only to review the separate topics covered on the test, but also tie topics together so that students don't need to rely upon memorization.

ACT Math,

ACT Math

I enjoy tutoring for the ACT because I feel that this test assesses students more on their math knowledge than on their test-taking strategy. I have had excellent results with the students I have helped (there's a review from one of them on my profile page), and my experience/familiarity with the secondary math curriculum allows me to give students a complete review of the content covered on the ACT.

Trigonometry

I have extensive experience tutoring high school students in both Algebra 2 and Precalculus, where they study trigonometry at various levels. I am extremely well-versed in all of the areas of trigonometry -- unit circle, modeling with periodic functions, trig identities and equations, angular velocity. My students find that the subject makes a lot more sense after they've studied it with me; they are able to see the "big picture," i.e., how the topics are tied together.

Restored my son's confidence in math.

After a couple of tough years of math in middle school, my son started saying, "I'm just not meant to be good at math." This past year, Rebecca has been tutoring him, and it has made all the difference. Rebecca is a skilled teacher. She explains concepts clearly and easily zeros in on areas that need more attention. She is also kind and supportive - I can tell that she really cares about my son's success. He trusts her and looks forward to their sessions each week. We are grateful for her help.

Amazing Geometry teacher

Rebecca is a kind and understanding tutor, she strives hard for making a class worthwhile and maybe even fun. I've been working with her for a while with geometry and I have to say that she knows a wide range of those problems. We have gone through most of my first semester, and our class usually looks like me throwing out problems and Rebecca analyzing and explaining it thoroughly to me. I'm also very glad that she can almost answer all the questions in a heartbeat without preparing. For example, we often get POCs or some sort of extra assignment for every week and she explains it calmly to me. I am very happy about having an opportunity working with her!

Middle School Math

Rebecca did an excellent job developing a curriculum for my 7th grade daughter who is bored in her current class. She researched our schools standards and is helping her work through next years standards using an approach that encourages true learning and not just memorization.

Best Math Teacher!

For the past year, my daughter studies math with Rebecca. Before having lessons with Rebecca, my daughter had a hard time to understand basic concepts about pre-algebra. Rebecca is very knowledgeable about all topics of math for K-12 grades and good at explaining the basic concepts based on the targeted students. She is very patient and tries to encourage the students to actively participate in the lesson. I am very happy to have a great tutor like her. I highly recommend her. She is the best math tutor I have ever met.

Expert, Calm, Supportive, Highly Knowledgeable Tutor

Rebecca was a godsend for our child - with her support he was not only able to get through Geometry successfully, but also able to really enjoy the course, which was wonderful to see given that math courses have been highly stressful for him in the past. Rebecca is a calm, highly expert, seasoned, patient tutor. Our son has great things to say about the value of his weekly hour with Rebecca. We are already planning to continue with her for Algebra 2 next year.

Knowledgeable and Flexible Geometry Tutor

Rebecca stepped in a few months into my son's semester, and was instrumental in providing him with the help he needed to get back on track in geometry. In his accelerated class topics are covered quickly, and so it is easy for students to fall behind. Rebecca provided instruction and guidance in all the areas where he was struggling, often with little advance notice to her. She was also very flexible accommodating our schedules and arranging session times. I highly recommend Rebecca, and plan on using her for any geometry struggles my son might have in the future.

Knowledgeable

We worked on Introductory Calculus; she is patient and an excellent listener and teacher. I will definitely take her again as a tutor, as she focuses on the students' needs and wants for their course and success.

Excellent Tutor

Our 9th grade daughter started working with Rebecca shortly after the start of the school year and they've been meeting weekly since then. The sessions are an opportunity for my daughter to ask questions about topics she is covering in school that may not be entirely clear or to get ahead on upcoming topics. Rebecca is an excellent tutor. Even though she doesn't always know what topics my daughter will want to discuss before the sessions, Rebecca is able to teach the topic in a clear and concise, step-by-step way. It is clear that she has deep experience with different ways to approach topics and she will often introduce variants of homework questions to help solidify my daughter's understanding or push her thinking further.

Polite and Knowledgeable

Rebecca is a highly qualified and experienced math teacher. She tutored our daughter in geometry for a school year. Rebecca is very knowledgeable of the math curriculum and understands the problems that geometry students face. She was very patient in working through the problem solving process with our daughter and had a nice calm demeanor that our daughter welcomed at each session. Rebecca listened to our daughter’s questions and worked with her particular learning style. Our daughter felt relaxed around Rebecca and never felt nervous about asking questions. Our daughter asked to work with Rebecca this summer to review and prepare for Algebra 2 and Trigonometry next year. Rebecca is a gem and we/our daughter look forward to working with her again.

Phenomenal Tutor!

Ms. D. was a phenomenal Geometry tutor for my daughter. She immediately developed a wonderful rapport with my daughter and made difficult concepts easy for her to understand. She is trustworthy, what every parent desires for in a tutor. Her credentials are impeccable and she is tremendous. Moreover, she was able to the identify “opportunities for improvement” and help my daughter become a top performer in her class.
