One of the most enjoyable aspects of teaching is working with students one-on-one. Helping a student find ways of learning that are particularly suited to his/her strengths is truly rewarding for both the teacher and the student.

I have had great success with students in the past as evidenced by their own enjoyment of our time together and their increased access to subject content and future learning. Many parents have asked me to work with their students outside of school. As a certified teacher I currently work with high school children in the context of our science classes, but I always have one or two students who I work with outside of class who need extra help, or want a deeper knowledge and understanding of the content.

For several years while I lived in Madison I tutored middle and high school students both in the public school and privately. Many of these students had learning disabilities or were learning English as their second language.

My tutoring methods focus first on getting to know a little bit about each student: what s/he enjoys most, how s/he learns best, what his/her learning strengths and weaknesses are, and what the goals are for our study together. Then I will often spend time outside of our sessions together brushing up on the topics we will cover. Sometimes I provide supplemental information as study guides. We usually work according to school schedules, on a yearly or semester basis. I am willing to help provide summer tutoring programs as well.

I find tutoring particularly worthwhile because the tutor and the student share the same goal: to help deepen the student's understanding of the subject matter and of his/her particular learning style. When a young person deepens in self-knowledge, it is a gratifying experience for a teacher as well as the student.

Anatomy,

Anatomy

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Madison with a degree in Conservation Biology. Toward the end of my time in college, I began to explore biological illustration, specifically human anatomy. I took several anatomy courses and illustrated the course book for my professor. After receiving my teaching certification, I began teaching at a small rural high school. Within a couple of years I was asked to teach Human Anatomy. I've been teaching this course over the last nine years and really love it.
Botany,

Botany

My college degree from University of Wisconsin- Madison was in Conservation Biology, with an emphasis in Botany. I took many botany courses, (both upper level undergraduate and graduate courses), practiced botanical illustration, and went on as many field biology courses I could. After I received my baccalaureate degree I went on to study science education and receive my teaching certificate. My first teaching job, which I still hold, was teaching Botany at a small private high school in my town. I am now the Science and Math Department chair. I continue to learn about botany in many ways, including regional medicinal and edible wild plants, classification studies, evolutionary and genetic studies among many more.
Genetics,

Genetics

I've been a high school science teacher for the past 11 years at a small, rural high school. By nature, we are required to be diverse in our knowledge of subjects and flexible in being able to learn new ones. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Madison with a degree in Conservation Biology. My course work exposed me to a wide variety of genetics work, which I continued to study after graduating. I have taught a Genetics and Biotechnology class over the last 8 years to seniors at our high school. It is a field that grows exponentially and requires continued research and openness to learning new things to keep abreast of what is happening each year and to keep the topics relevant to new students.
Zoology,

Zoology

I graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Conservation Biology. I took a few courses as an undergraduate in Zoology studies and also worked on Biological illustration. After beginning my teaching job at a small, rural high school, I expanded the classes I taught to include Zoology. I've been teaching Zoology at the high school level for the past 6 years. This course has evolved over time as I have gained more knowledge and done more research. I no longer teach the course the way I was taught, but have researched a wide variety of guiding approaches and choose to teach the course with the overarching themes of evolution, classification, and anatomy with regard to animal studies.
