I have been involved with music most of my life, starting with the piano and eventually adding the violin. I have studied under a number of violin and piano teachers with varied teaching methods and have come to realize how valuable one-on-one instruction is for a student's development.

My teaching centers around using and adapting traditional methods of teaching for each individual student. I also employ the use of various etude and exercise books and adapt them depending on the students needs. I also focus heavily on practice methods, and achieving goals with specific practicing techniques.

I hold a BA in Music from Thomas Edison and a Music Theory & Counterpoint Specialist Certificate from Berklee College of Music. I have 10+ years of experience playing music and have had the opportunity to teach in multiple settings, including one-on-one private lessons, group lessons, orchestral coaching, chamber music coaching, and teaching general music in a school setting.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I have been composing and arranging in various styles for most of my life as a musician. I started to more seriously pursue composition around my first year as a music student in college. I took lessons in composition from my piano teacher Tom Mann, and ran ideas by him and received feedback on style, form, melody, etc. During my second and third years in college, I studied under the composer Ben Newhouse - a film and concert composer who teaches at Berklee School of Music. This period of studying was the most important amongst all the various experiences I had in writing music. I learned about film and classical music in a very hands-on way, and had to churn out small pieces and film cues weekly and then receive feedback on their effectiveness. I expanded my harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic vocabulary a great deal and gained a much greater level of musical fluency. I now currently study composition privately, incorporate it into my teaching, and write music for commercial production.

Homeschool

Piano

Piano

I have studied piano throughout my life under a number of various teachers. The bulk of my instruction took place in my teenage years under the tutelage of Tom Mann, a piano teacher based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Under him I studied the works of Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Debussy, Liszt, and multiple other composers. Our relationship over the course of my time as his student evolved into an almost collaborative experience in which we tried to get the bottom of musical and technical questions through in-depth discussion and experimentation. This experience gave me an enormously helpful foundation in Classical piano playing, from which I have jumped into a number of other styles, including pop, jazz, and film music. Throughout my years as a pianist I always explored pedagogical ideas that would help me and help others. The various teachers I studied under helped me greatly with this, along with my opportunities to teach others and perform for other people. I now teach piano privately in Boydton, VA and continue to explore the world of piano performance and pedagogy.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

I'm qualified for teaching ear training for many reasons. The first is the fact that I've been studying music for most of my life and therefore have developed an ear for identifying various musical intervals and elements. Also, I am a violinist, and therefore have studied the realm of pitch on a very deep level. I have studied the various temperaments (Equal, Pythagorean, Just, etc.) and there uses. In addition to the study of intervalic relationships I have also studied how to internalize and memorize them, and developed sensitivity to their sound. I studied these various things with private teachers as well in college and now incorporate ear-training into my own private teaching
General Music,

General Music

I have been studying general music for about a decade, and I currently teach general music at a private school. My approach to general music centers around ear-training and sight-singing. Through these two elements, a student will learn all the foundational elements of music and achieve a high level of musical literacy. The knowledge and skill built from this approach can then be applied to all other musical disciplines.
Guitar,

Guitar

I've been playing guitar since the early age of five. Starting with just learning basic folk and pop styles, progressing on to rock, jazz, and classical. I've both taught and gigged as a lead and rhythm guitarist since my late teens, and have put a large amount of focus on bringing in insights from my experience with violin and piano to help students tackle any and every problem they encounter as a guitarist.
Music Theory,

Music Theory

I have been studying music theory for about a decade. My initial study of music theory began when I started my studies on the violin, when I had to learn the basics of intervals, scales, ear-training, different tuning systems, and many other fields. When I started my studies in college, I studied music theory and composition very deeply and have since incorporated that knowledge into my teaching. In addition, I received a Music Theory Specialist Certificate from Berklee during my time getting my bachelor's degree.

Songwriting,

Songwriting

I've been writing songs since I started playing instruments as a young child, and later found myself writing and performing songs in bands and solo gigs. I furthered my education in college in the areas of composition, poetry, and songwriting-specific courses. I've continued to write and perform songs in my professional career as a musician, and I've also moved into teaching others and helping them find their own voice.
Violin

Violin

I have been playing the violin since age 13 and have studied with a number of private teachers and have studied both chamber music and orchestral playing. I have been involved in multiple styles of music outside of the Classical tradition, including bluegrass, Scottish folk music, blues, and rock.

Knowledgeable and Patient Music Tutor

Bradyn has been helping me learn music theory. He is very knowledgeable and patient. I highly recommend Bradyn if you need help deciphering the language of music. Some music tutors, unintentionally I am assuming, tend to use musical jargon as they explain other musical jargon! Bradyn does not do that! He is humble enough to explain the simplest of musical terms.

Really laid back lesson

I learned more from him in our hour lesson than I could have if I tried to learn piano myself. He was really laid back and informative. I really appreciate him getting to the point of what I need to learn and how I can practice. Would highly recommend!

Patient

Answers all her questions, she gave him a lot of good feedback to improve her play. She’s excited for her next class, thanks for Wyzant. I think we found a good match for my daughter.
